Title: Cheney TT500 basket case on UK eBay.
Post by: firko on July 31, 2013, 11:27:55 am
Here's a rare one worth watching. The perfect alternative to the usual HL or C&J.

Cheney Frame for Yamaha XT500, stored in shed from 1979/80, informed it is probably pre 1978.  Comes complete with

original tank with profile to suit XT500 engine, rear mudguard with rear light and mounting for air filter.

Also a set of forks of unknown make, came with the frame when I got it, complete with front brakle assembly.

This was a project in my earlier days but have never got round to rebuilding it as a complete bike, so maybe someone

with more time can have a go as restoring it.

Lazy or wise?

You now know that to do that project (correctly) you may have to spend a fortune...
To get the frame up to spec will make your eyes water.  (removeteh plating, repairs, polish, replate, ouch that is going to cost....)  Having a new one made would cost less.

There is a complete bike for £4k in the Uk that hasnt sold in ages, and I think by the time to work on that project, you will fly past £4k.

Of course you dont have to spend anything like that to have a lot if fun.  Blast and paint the frame, get a cheap donor bike and away you go.  You could have yourself a bargain four banger racer on your hands for not a lot of money.

Depends how serious you want to be.....

Yeah, well you know... ;)

BUT, it might have been cool to build it with all XT parts, as a Cheney trail/enduro bike, with lights and plate. Not MX at all. Building it low might be the only way to make that short swingarm look decent!
And some Cheney's had painted frame instead of plated....

Ahh, well better get that image out of my head, and save my money till you find me that Curtis Honda project Ben ;)

And, yes, I'm a bit wiser on what it takes to replate, that's why mine has been put aside for a while.... :'( :-\
