Post by: cumagutsa on July 31, 2013, 07:48:13 am
Hi All, I am looking at getting into vmx and have the opertunity to buy a 1976 RM125a in schmik unrestored condition but am hesitant as i am pushing nearly 100kg  ::).

It's not the size that matters, it's what you do with it  :).....seriously, 125's are great to ride, go for it.

As long as you are not expecting to holeshot then go for it. Get the right springs on it for your weight and enjoy the lightweight racer. You might need to change clutch plates a little more often than the smaller gentlemen  ;)

Says a couple of lard arses  ;D mate your too heavy for a 125  ;) you can ride an 80 but whats the point  ???

100kgs you need a 250 , if you can buy the 125 at a good price get it and move it on , use the procceds to buy a 250 .

Its just physics nothing personal , if you want to enjoy it buy a bike that will comfortably pull you round the track .

 Depends a lot on your ability+fire in the belly.

 Do not assume that a 125 is not powerful enough to get you into trouble.

  Some of these little monsters can be quite startling.

 Consider especially where the centre of gravity ends up with 100kg  perched on the top of it.!
  I would especially practice  some hole shots ( without witnesses)  because you could quite easily find youself on your bum thinking 'What just happened!'
 cheers pancho.

Thanks for the replies so far fellas (allbeit a little mixed),
Maybe it could bring some inspiration to loose a good 10kg.
As for ability, i think i sort of have that covered, and i think there is a dwindling candle in the belly somewhere.

cheers

Geezus Bill, I was hoping there was somebody else I could beat :)....cumagutsa, RM125A's are a great little bike, I have one and love it...I'm 92 kg, like the Assasan say's, ride it flat out.....there not slow by any means.

"I'm too big for a 125" is just code for "I can't ride for shit"...

It's a different skill set to ride a 125 fast (compared to a big bike), but once you get your head around it, it will help you on any bike.

If there's any validity in the idea of a 100kg bloke not being able to ride a 125, it's because:
bigger blokes generally aren't as fit;
less-fit riders tend to be lazy riders;
riding lazy on a 125 tends to be slow.

I'm 90kg, but have been 98. I have never felt that my weight was a noticeable disadvantage - I got beaten because the other riders were better and/or fitter, but not simply because they weighed less.

Cumagutsa,Go for it . But be warned. If you come to HEAVEN, are under 100 kgs and ride a Pre 78 125 you will have to start 20 mtrs behind the rest of us lard arses. So my advice is to get stuck into those pies and come up front with the real men... Haha

Of all my bikes my 76 125X is the most fun to ride even though its a lot more work to get there , 250's and open classer's are easier on the amount of clutch and gear usage . I was mid 90kg when I last rode it . (now down to 78kg will I be faster ) Iain

  I think 125 should be like Hoarse racing the rider all must be the same weight ..

   Eg     iainyz  is now 78kg  he need to eat 22kg of Pies
     and Beer befor he rides so it fair
      and get Him  back to 100Kg  like the rest of Us

You'll be faster alright, but you will die from malnutrition after 2 laps and still won't podium. I'll put you down for a couple of pies with sauce then ;D
