Title: clutch oil

G'day, just about to get the 172 Montesa cota running again the only thing now is what oil to put in the clutch / gear box.Hope some one can help . The book says 20 grade but I cant seem to find any one that sells it.p

Are they separate if so, i run ATF the one for older cars for the clutch and gearbox oil is 20/50 motor oil for older cars as well. That is what i use in my Bultaco and it works fine.

Thanks for your reply Euro. The clutch and gear box are lubricated by the same oil .ie.The clutch and gear box are joined.What I realy need to know : Is what quantity ?.p

A warning to all owners of Montesa's. Do not use ATF in a Montesa clutch. Pre 1984 models use all steel plates. ATF causes glazing of the plates
and ruins them. I have seen it on a number of clutches. The Cota 172 holds 30 1/2 ounces of fluid.

Thanks for that Cappra. I am going to use straight 30 grade . Any other suggestions ? p

Some owners use a modern two stroke gear oil with good results.

I have just bought some modern two stroke gear box oil . Thank you for your help , Euro and Cappra.p
