What are the chances that a 82 KX250 engine will fit in a 79 KX250 frame? My initial thought is no due to the exhaust clearance?
Can someone tell me I'm wrong and that it will fit ;)

I think it will fit, never done it so I couldn't say for sure, maybe cross-referencing some part no's might give a clue (Geoff !).
Do you have an '81 engine you can get your hands on? I don't think there's much difference between the '79 to '82 in performance? I've got a spare '79 engine, might stick it in a '82 frame ;-)

If its from a single shock frame it would not be evo legal, surely finding a 79 engine is the answer or better yet buy KDX 400 engine?
-
Isn't one side port and the other center exhaust port ?
-
Yeah like Evo said...'82 is centre-port so has semi-cradle frame, '79 frame is single downtube.
-
KDX 250 would be your best bet, they are a center port exhaust......

I came across one at a good price and wanted the bike finished (yet to be started of course ::)) in time for classic dirt.
But if anyone has a A5 engine or KDX400 or any other side port engine, then I'd be interested!!!

I have an '82 KX250 project if anyone's interested. Motor, frame & some parts done, nothing much else though.

The 82 motor won't fit the 79 frame without major modification. The 82 cases are part of the swingsrm pivot mount with the axle going through them, the 79 is totally different.
74-79 motor will bolt into your 79 frame..
