Billy Connerly ....had a series on it some time ago riding the old highway and was very interesting. The new Route seems to by- pass a lot of history.

I can give you some ideas, I done a bit of it, what area you going to? If your doing Arizona ,go to Flagstaff, not to far from the Grand Canyon. They reckon the town was the one that the kids movie "Cars" was based on. If you are heading towards St Louise and Illinois, can tell you a few things that may interest you. There is still a lot of 66 left, the road number has been changed, but there are a lot of signs to guide you or tell you that you are on Route 66. Just a quick must see is the St. Louis Arch, google it, you have to go up it! Shits all over Sydney Harbour Bridge, Six Flags at St Louise, Springfield Illinois, Where Abraham Lincoln's tomb is and you can go into it, also one night a week they do a re enactment with Union Soldiers , shoot a canyon, bring in the flag. Also great tour of Lincoln's Home, which is free and amazing, if you are into history. Can send you some more real 66 stuff like Palms Cafe in Atlanta, small town on 66 in Illinois and has one of the Giant Statues.
So let me know and tell you more if you like, hope that helps.
