Title: Steering ball race removal

I'm restoring a CR125m1. I thought the steering ball races would tap out of the frame easily, but they won't budge.

I presume heat will help, but the frame has already been done in 2pac.

Any hints?

Do you plan to keep them to reuse ?

If not, get a bigger hammer, they've probably been in there for years, and get the frame on something solid so the energy for moving the bearing doesn't get lost with the frame moving about.

The easiest way to remove them without wreaking seat they sit in is to run a bead of weld around the race. Let it cool and it shrinks and the race will fall out.

I saw this in ADB and I couldn't believe how good it works.

I wouldn't bash them as the seat will wear and then what do you do.

Hammer is not a tool !!

I have the rt1 and rt2 steering race removers.

Thanks for the ideas.
I'm not keeping the races as the are the original loose bearing ones.
Is there a lip the race sits in or is the frame tube the same diameter all the way through?

The bearings have a seat that they sit against, going out its the same diameter, when you fit the new bearings you need to make sure the new bearing is hard up against its seat.
However you choose to apply pressure to the bearing to remove and refit, it needs to be on the outer race as that's where the friction is.

Steve Cramer Products in Vic are the distributor.
I called them & they said RRP is $44.95 & they have both the RT-1 & RT-2 in stock.
As they are the distributor he said just order through your local bike shop.
