Title: Cagiva WMX
Post by: AJ on August 16, 2007, 08:48:56 pm
Has anyone has come across any '84 WMX Cagiva's. I raced a 250 (190cc) & would like to pick up one to restore / race. Happy to consider 125 or 500. Any leads appreciated. It's OK to be different, isn't it?

2 of them made it to Victoria and were ridden by Vic A Grader Ian Crompton, not sure what happened to them or Ian. I know he used to live in Tarneit (near tooradin) back then.

My father contacted the father of the bloke I sold my bike to in '92.

He had a shed cleanout 2 months ago & took all the old bikes to the scrap metal yard.

He couldn't confirm if the Cagiva was amongst them.

After 15 years I hope I didn't miss it by 2 months.

Search continues. Assistance appreciated.

The wmx190 certainly is a rare bird. I had one back in the 90's. It was one very fast bike but parts were hard to find as it done a big end. Ended up giving it to the wreckers for $200 :(

zorroz,

Yes they were quick. Mine came from the shop geared for desert racing with Pirelli sand tires.

Pity to hear it went to the wrecker.

If it wasn't too many years ago do you remember which wrecker? One willing to buy a Cagiva might still be in the habit. Never know what might be left.

Hoony,

I've been in touch with the bloke that runs the cagivawmx web site.

He said I'm the first bloke from OZ to contact him.

He said he has a number of 190's but hasn't started resto yet.

He has sourced parts so he will be a helpful contact.

Search continues. Any assistance appreciated.

regards,
AJ

zorroz,

There is a similar WMX motard on ebay in the UK. He mentions UK only sale as he was sent a chq for $3K by a previous prospective buyer from South Africa. Sounds like the dud chq scam.

Quick someone tell me there is an '83 WMX190 on ebay in the US.

OK so I'm stressed, this is the first one I've seen since the search commenced.

It looks like the '84 I had except for the forks. Mazzochi's on the Aust model. they were late out here so the US '83 is probably the same as the Aust. '84.

I have emailed the seller about a sale to OZ.

Can anyone give me an idea of the $ damage & procedure to ship out here.

Looking foward to ge hold of this one.

regards,
AJ

I'd own that in a heart beat. My mate struck it lucky last year where he needed some hydraulic pump for work that cost $10g here. Found one in US for $2g (weighed 200kg). He had a mate that happened to be sending a container over from there to oz and had a fair bit of room and got it sent here for nothing. I was thinking at the time how great it would have been to have a dream bike sent over for nothing :(

Evo550,

Thanks so much for the lead.

It's a WMX 250 (190cc). I have purchased off the photo's

It's rough as guts.

Looks complete less Dellorto carbi / intake, seat & silencer. Also siezed, damge unkown.

I've been in touch with Phil at road & race (obsessed with all things italian). He says no drama lets have it running for CD5. More faith than I.

Gents, now we're looking for Cagiva WMX bits.

regards,

AJ

Paul,

I have been in touch with the bloke that owns this bike on a few occasions over the last few months looking for leads. I tried to get a price off him just last weekend for the 125 with no luck.

This is the last of his '83 - '84 bikes.

Paul,

Thanks for the pm with the phone no. for the Cagiva for sale. Turns out it's a WMX500.

Hoony,

I rang Michael who owns the bike. He thinks it's an '86 that has had a bottom end rebuild but is a non runner as it needs a re sleave. He is sending me photos.

AJ

Paul,

I don't know what a re-sleeve would cost, but it is probably the easiest option.

If the 250 is anything to go by, the 500 will be a Nikosil.

Options

1. re nikosil the original bore if it's OK & replace the Cagiva Piston (good luck finding one)

2. Re-sleeve & instal a YZ490 piston.

Pictures of the bike haven't turned up yet.

Hi Aj, post some pics if you get them. i went cold on the bike as parts will be very scarce i suspect.

i don't need that sort of challenge at present.

Hoony,

No probs I'll put up photo's when I get them.

Parts are obviously an issue. They were as rare as rockin horse poo when new. I was always the only Cagiva rider on the grid.

The bloke I've spoken to about rebuilding my 250 has no worries about getting it running. He said engine bearings are metric, he sources pistons by specs rather than model & has a contact in italy that gets him nos from the 1950's onward.

I haven't discussed a 500 with him but I'm sure he mentioned one of the blokes that works for him had wmx500's & has all the tricks to keep one running.

AJ
