Yeah think of all the racing and competition types you have seen ,not just off-road, and ,,, well I came up with two, of course had to nominate the ubiquitous mighty Honda CB750 four K series. Sit there and think of the photos and real life sightings of various type race bikes and sidecars that are 754 powered.
The second ? Shock Horror ... earlier,, Triumph 650 twins... :o

just in applications would have to be vincent v twin 1000cc
road bike
road race bike
drag bike
speedway sidecar
still around today in all sorts of specials
and not to mention my o/all favorite engine followed by v twin jap

The magnificent Vincent , Mmmmm... sadly I passed on the HRD's as I have no recollection of a Vincent powered trails sidecar or solo ice speedway racer ,both I have 754 and Trumpy photos of.
-
dont have any pics of honda powered morgens either.
-
Without hesitation.....the unit Triumph 650. You name a form of motorcycle racing and you can bet a Trumpy is not only competing but is/was winning.
-
Firko is on it, they were in everything until yamaha popped out the 650 twin that didnt leak oil....
Id put money on the kwaka 900 / 1000 zed series ....they were in sidecars, drag bikes road racers sand dragger buggies and small cars
they were knocked over by the GSXR 750 /1100 when those motors hit the stands

yamaha popped out the 650 twin that didnt leak oil....
Yep but it still wasn't as good as a Triumph in stock form. A 650 Triumph Bonneville walks all over a Yamaha XS650+ the Yamaha is a damn heavy lump of metal compared to the Trumpy..
-
Jim don't despair ,I will find the photo of a 754 front engined cycle-car (yep I seem to remember it is an evilly corrupted Morgan too) soon and post it here for you ;) I do Love HRDs and John Arther Prestwichs V Twins ;D
" until Yamaha popped out the 650 twin that didn't leak oil...." nope they did not leak that much oil,,,well at least until they popped the conrods out of their cases ...as was not that uncommon on modified XS650's ;)

The air cooled GSX 1100 engine is still powering many drag bikes and become the engine to have in a Katana frame for unlimited P5 road racing. They pump out some serious HP.
-
tim all good vincent even has trials bikes but the 500 half a twin a forum member has one.i have just bought a triumph flattracker so i will side with firko but wish it was a vinnie dirttracker.

"If you added sound as a factor nothing beats 2 or 3 Vincent outfits racing as the Sydney showground". Undisputed , can still be heard(er) full on racing at Broadford and in South Australia at special Classic Title meets.
MY two unforgettable sounds, Blown Vincent speedway sidecars at speed and from the other world, Top fuel rail dragsters...
-
yeah, must admit, havn't tripped over any vinny mtrs at the local tip while dodging trump lumps whilst disgorging lawn clippings from the trailer ::), :P

What about the Harley XR750, Sweeeet!

BSA Gold Star must have been used at some stage in every discipline...

The Early RM 125 a-b and c' Motors were very popular in sliders and go karts for a while.
it was interesting as Suzuki base all their parts on frame number sequences.
So all these guys with early RM motors in sliders etc would go into a Suzuki dealer and go "i need a 1st o/s for an 80 rm 125"
"or was it a 81?? ...could be a 79?"
Whats the frame no??
3 piston kits later... the right one would turn up at great expense to the poor bugger

To quote Firko " It's a horses for courses thing but to me the mark of a good engine is one that can be adapted to perform any number of differing tasks with reliability and ease of maintenance"." versatility, and that's what I think makes a great engine " regarding the DT250 Yamaha, That is exactly my reasoning's for selecting the Triumph Unit (and pre unit) 650 and the Honda K/F series CB750 Fours.
Is your selection versatile ? ie. Motocross/scrambles, enduro, trials ,trail rides, road racing, speedway ,long track ,short circuit, AMA flat track, ice speedway , rallying, hill climbs, drag racing etc etc
Reliable ? or does it need a fleet of factory technicians to rebuild it after ...every...outing.
Can you preform the basic maintenance it needs ?
Maybe add these items to your thought trains.
Could you race bog stock as you received it from the shop or did you have waste lots of time and money to try to make it work for you?
How was the power delivery and the handling ? ( to be fair think relative to the era ) . Cheers Tim754
