Is it possible to fit a cylinder from an '81 490 on to an '82 490 motor ?
And what other differences are there between the two....anything that would cause scruteneering issues at a title event such as tassie?
-
I have an '82 motor in mine and it is legal. Not sure if they interchange but i would guess that they would
-
Even though it's a motor derived from a pre '85 bike?
-
The motors are the same although the '82 supposedly has slightly different porting.
-
Oh! When did Maico go to reed valve?
-
The 82 cylinder bolts straight on. It does have slightly different porting and produces more torque - it is noticeably better than an 81 cylinder. Stock reeds came in with the change in motors in 83

The 82 GS 490 Enduros had reeds. All 81-83 cylinders are interchangable.
-
I realise it's not really an issue at club level, I guess what I am tyring to find out is if I was to venture to Tassie for the titles, would a reed valve "Pre 85 " barrell be allowed in the evo class?
-
I would think that a reed valve cylinder from a '82 490 enduro would be legal because that bike was still a twin shock.
-
In the States the reed valve bikes with Magnum engines were 1983 Spyder E. is was basically a 82 enduro with Ohlins shock and the reed cylinder. Hard to find around here.
