Title: Honda XL 500 Conrod
Post by: Chucky on May 28, 2013, 10:04:35 am
Hi, I have pulled apart my 81 XL500 engine and found too much play in the piston. After removing the piston and found excessive wear in the gudgeon pin which holds the piston on to the rod. I plan to replace the piston and pin but don't really want to replace the rod (lazy). So I measured the internal diameter of the small end of the rod and found it was 20.9mm. I checked the good book and it said it should be maximum 22.07mm. I double check my measurments but got the same 20.9mm. Would this be an error in the book or have I got an aftermarket rod in the engine?

Error in the book, the early 500s used a 21mm piston pin.

buy a new piston pin and see how it 'feels',youll have to buy one in any case and oil the small end ive the rod.it mighten be as bad as you think it is ;D
