Title: NSW Vintage Dirt Bike Display UPDATED 6 / 7 / 2013
Post by: Ted on May 25, 2013, 01:28:10 pm
I am pleased to announce, with the full backing of Suttos KTM and HEAVEN VMX that the BACK TO THE FUTURE vintage dirt bike display will be held on the 6/7/2013 at Suttos Motorcycle Shop 141 Blaikie Rd Jamisontown ( PENRITH ) between the hours of 8am and 3 PM

Chris Sutton came up with the name and is aiming to have his mates Delorean on show to help promote it. He will also have a HUGE sale on this day to get us as much exposure as possible. He has also appointed one staff member ( who is involved in the VMX scene ) to liase with me on what is required. To say Chris is super keen would be an understatement.

HEAVEN VMX have allowed us to print their flyer/ calendar off and hand them out to people. Plenty of Heaven members have agreed to show their bikes and hand out flyers

I will approach Roy from NEPEAN this week and ask if he can get some Dirt Track guys involved. ( DONE )

I will also ask Shaun from NORTHERN DISTRICTS MCC if he can swing some Pre 90 guys into action (DONE)

I am sure that FIRKO can get some Pre 65 / 75 fellas to also come along ( DONE )

I will ask HVA61 if he can get some Vinduro people as well ( DONE )

Will have a Juniors bike display , allowing parents to see what machines their children can ride in VMX (DONE)

We need to cover all eras of machinery , particularly the 70's when dirt bikes were huge in this country.

I am arranging ( thru a friend ) for a very major motorcycle magazine photographer to cover proceedings on the day with a view to let MODERN MXer's know that there is a vintage thing happening.

We will be able to cater for up to 100 bikes, all on concrete hard stand. Chris said to bring quick shades to house our bikes under so as this thing goes off rain, hail or shine.

If you want to race your bikes in combined classes or 2 and 3 bike races then we will scrap this idea and sit on our hands and do nothing. This is a perfect venue right in the heartland of NSW motorcycling at arguably the biggest dirt bike store in Australia, smack bang in the middle of the VMX calendar offering the most exposure to what we do.

This whole thing apart from a little bit of effort and time is ABSOLUTELY FREE

There are just a couple of rules:

1- As we are operating out of an ongoing motorcycle business we would not like to see any FOR SALE signs on bikes or parts. ( Discuss selling stuff by all means but PLEASE no signs )

2- Have your bikes in place and trailers / vehicles parked in street by 8am. Suttos trading hours are 8:30 am till 2:30 pm but Chris has hinted he will stay open as long as we are there. I am sorry but if you are not in place on time you will have to wheel your bikes in from the street just as it is at any exhibition.

I have 85 or so bikes committed already so a show of hands on here would be good

Any positive comments or ideas are greatly appreciated

Cheers

Awesome Ted.

Can I bring the YZ ?

No show pony but i think it's cool

Also that cr arrives on Tuesday I can bring it too

I think it's cool too. Maybe not as cool as a alloy arm 125 B Suzuki ;D but cool all the same

And bring your CR

We are not aiming at a concourse resto show , we are just showing what we ride. That's why Mark is organizing a couple of rat bikes to let people know that you can go high zoot or as ratty as you like. All are welcome and Chris is super keen. Also a plus for us is that his shop will be offering huge discounts on anything we want to buy from him. Save your pennies for then

I've had a ring around and I've got a good dozen bikes lined up already. I'll print up some flyers introducing newbies to the options available to them within the VMX bubble including VDT and Vinduro's and the contact details for HEAVEN, Penrith and Norths clubs. This'll be fun. ;D

After attending a couple of these already I have found that the public will chew your ear off about your bikes but will be hesitant to approach you. I suggest that as an example , say for Paul's YZ, he simply prints out a piece of paper with 1977 YAMAHA YZ 125 D and places it in front of his bike. This will automatically bring a former owner who cannot distinguish a D from a E forward. Also if a guy says I had one of these back in 77 , maybe let him sit on it and reflect on what it was like back then. You never know he may like it and source one.

Ted

Thats fabulous , i rang that mobile phone number and it was the local YMCA , whats going on there buddy

The Iron men of Enduro, Vinduro / Cross country generally dont usually hang out with the weak little wenna totting moto cross boys ,given they only ride a maximum of 20 mins per race, but since its a fabulous opportunity to show our stuff and progress the cause, we could have at least 10 bikes on display , most being from the premier marquee of husqvarna.

Yes thank you Alison. Much appreciated

FAT-TOY, By all means bring them. I have never seen either of them .Looking forward to it

Good man Slakewell

Obviously Shoey and Pete don't plan on riding their steeds at Canowindra.  Otherwise they wouldn't have any wheels left on them euro queer bikes to push them into the show. Thanks guys.

WOW. One day on here and we have 50 or so bikes entered. Top effort men.

I'll be bringing this lot along plus the new Hindall if it's finished in time and another dunger.  Add Jonesy's , Edgar Phipps and Yamaico Pete's showpiece racers and Klub Kevlar will be well represented.  Jeez Fat-Toy, that Cotton and DOT are astounding. Where have you been hiding them 8)?

Firko picture this, It's the 2nd and final deciding round of the Pre 65 series and you are perched high up in the Canowindra Showground grandstand, knocking back a coldy from your esky watching these behemoths battle it out on a warm October late arvo. Then simply walking right next door to the very welcoming Golf Club, ordering a steak and throwing down as many schooners as you can fit in.

Vintage HEAVEN...Dead right.

Ted I seem to recall that Dave Onley had a couple of pristine Coopers at CD9, not to mention several showroom condition XR75/80's and a few Decksons & Delteks. That should evoke a few fond memories for the locals.
Are you out there Dave??

This is coming along fantastic and will most certainly be a site to see on the day, a credit to all those giving up their time and putting in the effort to make it happen. I would like to make some enquiries and do some research and see of the same thing can be replicated at Victorian venue in the near future. Its great to see everyone having a positive and constructive outlet to put their VMX passion into at the moment. Well done Ted and others.  :)

How much space are we allowed? If everyone is true to their word we'll have 100 bikes and that many take up a lot of space....not counting the trailer and ute parking. I'm going to Sutto's today or tomorrow to gather my own mental picture and suss out the area. I might run off a couple of photos .

Hi All

I know no-one personally in the VMX scene as I have not competed at any level however after attending CD9 and loving it I would love to bring my 1982 RM 465Z along but will check with my wife on the date before committing.

With so many bikes and hopefully a big crowd I would suggest sending out a media release to see if you cant get the local news papers or even one of the mobile TV news crews to come down, they always seem to finish the Saturday news with a feel good story and I think an event like this would fit the bill perfectly.

Congratulations on pulling this together!

Thanks BETRIC

Bitten,
Bring your RM . This will be a perfect opportunity to meet like minded people. I don't think us motley bunch are very newsworthy. Will see how we go in the final couple of weeks RE: Attracting media attention.

Mark,
There is plenty of room. The factory to the rear of his is not let. Chris actually said as many as we want. His staff member suggested we cap it at 100. If we get 20 % drop out 80 is still a fair number. How many of us were at Rooty Hill? I will gauge space on that. We will not be spread out all casual in deck chairs , we will be just lined up trying to sell our product to the public just as we were at Magoo's Camden show. There is plenty of parking off site in the street for cars and trailers.

Maybe I shouldn't have called it a Show and Shine but called it a display. It's only a get together of old bikes to hopefully enlist more participants in what we do.

( I still hope Husky Pete comes regardless of prizes )  ;D

Perhaps it might be good to follow up this day with a planned vmx social ride day with the view to actually get the potential vmx recruits to dust of those old bikes, and throw a leg over. Maybe a venue like pacific park etc. I know it's bit of a boring old place for most vmx'ers, but for someone who hasn't been on a bike for awhile, it could be great, plenty of wide open space. Lots of room for people and kind of informal. Classic dirt etc might be a bit overwhelming for the newbies to the sport. Just a thought.

Sorry Ted, that was just a bit of an in-joke. Steve's C15 actaully won the rat bike award at the last show and shine. We all understand that it's just a showcase for our sport. Besides, there's not enough Goddard's Glow in the world for Steve's bike ;D

A fellow VMXer just rang me from Taree NSW and asked if he could bring 3 bikes to display. Naturally I said yes. He thought that it may be invitation only. Definitely not, all are welcome.

Seeing as this has gained heaps of support I will start another heading 2 weeks out from show ( in 4 weeks time ) and ask those that are showing bikes to post up how many bikes. This way I can give Chris fairly accurate numbers. Capping it at 100 would really put it out there. I honestly believe we could double that figure quite easily but seeing as this has not been done before at this premises we should play it safe and stay to that figure and see how it goes. We currently stand at approx 80 bikes.

Cheers

So as to not detract from the Klub Kevlar Show and Shine I have changed the name to NSW Vintage Dirt Bike Display.

Hey Ted are you printing any advertising flyers? It would be good for putting up in our local bike shops/workplaces etc to attract a few more punters to come along and have a look.
Even better if you could post a link where we could download a flyer and print it off at home for distribution.

Pete,
Firko has offered to get some general flyers together offering new applicants choices. ie : MX, Dirt Track, Vinduro

Bevo and myself will get Heaven flyers, Shaun will have Norths info and Roy ( who unfortunately can't be there on the day ) will get Penrith's Dirt Track stuff together and hopefully Shoey will bring Manly Club Vinduro forms to distribute on the day

All we need now is your XR 250 and your MX 250 A to show

As we are displaying a Juniors section , to let prospective parents know what bikes are available to the young ones, does any body have either a CR, KX, RM, YZ  80 / 85 or perhaps a CRF 150 , TTR 125 to put alongside a XR 100 and a KTM 85. Sutto will also put brand new models of his 2013 KTM 65, 85, and 125 out with the juniors bikes.

Hi Steve
You are most welcome. As we are trying to garner support for Vintage off road you should bring the XT along with the YZ. I think it's best to keep it to Pre 90 so as to not give the impression that all old bikes can be ridden. Bring the period stuff as well.

I will post up and call for numbers in 3 weeks time so jump on the list and I will present numbers to Suttos.

Just an update on where I'm at with this.

After meeting Chris this past week he tells me he will advertise the display along with his sale on this day. He reckons lots of people will attend.

After local council talks I will not be going ahead with the BBQ. Health regs, parking, amenities, proximity to other food outlets and certificates, it's all too much. There is a pub next door if you wanna eat or bring your own lunch.

Ok, I'm calling for a show of hands as to who is coming. If I've left you off the list please list your name and how many bikes. I would like to get this wrapped up this coming week.

Cheers Ted

Good job Ted, at the end of the day its up to us to get our sport out there because if we don't then nobody will. Have you talked to the VMX Mag boys about a display of the best MX mag in the world?....could be beneficial to both of you guys. Also, send out an invitation to all the Sydney bike clubs, vintage, modern, road, dirt and let them know, I'm sure it might inspire someone, hope its a great success.....gee it's a shame you guys have such a hard time with beaurocracy as regarding the food.....what about if you use the local Scouts or something?...NSW is definitely over regulated. ....good luck again.

Thanks guys. Bring some Vinduro literature ( calendars dates / membership forms ) if you can. I really believe Vinduro will eclipse all other off road activities in the not too distant future.

HEAVEN VMX are putting on a Vinduro 5 weeks after this display on the 10th and 11th of AUGUST at Buladelah. If you want the maximum riding time for your dollar don't miss it. Check the www.heaven-vmx.com site over the next month or so for the event flyer.

OK Guys, just 2 weeks to go.

If you want to show your Garage Queen, Race bike, Barn find or half finished resto there is room for approx 10 bikes left.

For those that aren't bringing bikes but are coming for a look it would be appreciated if you could get there early and give your buddies from your respective clubs / organizations a hand to set up, wheel bikes in, pit tents etc.

We all need to be in place by 8 am. I know it's early but reward always follows effort. I will be there from 6 am to show where to set up.

After all, we are all in this together.

Cheers Ted

Ted,
You've probably got all your advertising strategies and media sorted out but would it be possible for you to post some links to advertising flyers for this event?
Going by the responses to this thread you will get hundreds of us die hard VMX fans to come along but if the aim is to attract new interest in the sport then we need to get flyers into as many Sydney bike shops, pubs, clubs, workplaces etc as possible.

We all know how good VMX is and what a fantastic bunch of people we all are but we need the bloke who had a MX bike back in the day and has always thought about getting another bike to realise that there is this entire VMX scene out there. (I was that guy a few years back) If there is a flyer on his footy tipping board at the local pub etc he might just think about coming along and finding out a bit more from all the nice people who will be at Sutto's that weekend.

I also recall seeing Brendan Jones (Jonesy) from WS FM at CD9 last year, perhaps someone on this forum is a close mate and can ask him to talk it up a bit on his radio show the week before the event.

I don't know how to put a link up for flyers. If some one on here could possibly design something that we could all print out that would be appreciated

NSW  Vintage Dirt Bike Display.

Up to Pre 90 dirt bikes

At:             Suttos Motorcycles

Where:       141 Blaikie Rd Jamisontown. ( PENRITH )

When:        6 / 7 / 2013

Time:         8am - 3pm

Come see the bikes that started Offroad racing in Australia

Suttos MC are advertising the show and his sale on his database. He says from 10 days out seems to work the best. He says he can reach out to 5,000 + people

Just dropped a flyer off at Stefan Applegren's shop. He is very keen to attend from 12 noon. He told me lots of people have been asking him about the vintage display at Suttos. He sees a very bright future for VMX. He is restoring a bike now to come ride. He will let his dad Hans know its on. WOW, we may have our very first legend.

I'm off to Ballards now to put a flyer up at Geoff's shop. If Geoff comes make that two.

Unfortunately Anthony Gunter will be in Austria at a KTM conference otherwise he just told me he would have come also.

Ken Smith from VMX mag tells me he will get some magazines together and have them on hand for the public to flick through and get a general idea what we are about.

Committee members from HEAVEN VMX, NDMCC, NEPEAN and Vinduro clubs will be present to answer any queries and hand out information packages.

I have received phenomenal interest from industry related people for this show. Hopefully after this event these same people may realize there is a growing market in what we do.

Once again I would like to thank everybody involved for putting in the effort to make this thing happen for the betterment of OUR sport

Just had a call from Suttos. As Chris is overseas and the shop will be too understaffed to conduct his massive sale day he has said that us vintage guys and our friends will still get a minimum 15% off tyres, chains, gear etc as a show of appreciation for us putting on our show there. Lets support the businesses that support us.

As long as this show goes good on Saturday I have tentative plans in place for a much bigger display next year with corporate stalls ( everybody i have approached is keen for it ) along with hundreds of vintage bikes

I have now had 2 requests regarding selling stuff. There is only 2 rules, one being, NO FOR SALE SIGNS. Negotiate a deal by all means but NO FOR SALE SIGNS. We are operating out of a very generous ongoing motorcycle shop and I feel it would be in bad taste to detract from their daily takings. If any signs are displayed you will be asked to remove them.

The One Stop Pine Warehouse adjacent to Suttos has generously said we can use his parking as well, enabling us to double our space. Worth considering this business if you need any furniture in the future.

I will be there from 6 am to advise on exclusion zones. Get in early and get the best spots.

I would like to thank the following businesses for supporting this event. Suttos KTM, TEKNIK MOTORSPORT, KELEN KAWASAKI, Stefan Applegren's Husqvarna, Ballards Offroad, SOS Suspension,Western Motorcycles Honda and Suzuki, One Stop Pine Warehouse Penrith, Leonay General Store and the The Club Hotel Bidwill

No Pics but the day went good with heaps of people wandering in and having a look, the usual "bloody hell, I had one of those back in the day" being common. There must have been close to the expected number of bikes with a great cross section of VMX & CDT machines from several Pre65 including two Pre60 through to a few Pre90s  8).

Heaven Club got a few new members one father and son signed up including entering the next race meeting. They rattled off their very large collection of sweet '74--83 KTMs two of which they had with them 8). Three Coopers from different owners is that a clutch of Coopers or a murder of Coopers? :P :D. We can all confirm that Purple Daves SC500 is indeed PURPLE and lives up to the scary reputation of massive HP just sitting there :o ;D. Carl & Pete's CZ is even better in the flesh ;) 8)

There were guy’s from Raymond Terrace, the ACT and Wollongong.

Ted did a great job organising the day, he even showed his human side being a proud Pop  :) 8) carrying around his grandchild showing them the finer points of VMX. Along with the generosity of Sutto's KTM and the other shops in the small immediate area it was a very positive day all-round.

Further to Montynut's comments the whole day was a success despite 40 promised bikes not turning up, we still had 70 bikes in attendance spread across all eras and disciplines.

Due to the state motocross titles being held this weekend just up the road Suttos claim their walk in off the street customers were down by 80%. As Greg said there were still plenty of people making enquiries and generally looking around. I would of handed out approx 50 HEAVEN info packs.

Plenty of guys took advantage of Suttos generosity. One guy buying 6 tyres and another having a $170 bill reduced to $100.

I had a very interesting conversation with two young guys who ride modern bikes. It went like this:

Do these things go?

Yes they all go

I mean do they go fast?

Some of them do

Yeah , we'll I've got a CRF 250. Are they faster than that?

Point one out

What about this green one here? How old is that?

This 1983 KX 500 here....hehe

Yeah, do you reckon it would be faster than my CRF 250? ( other guy says, I wasn't even born then )

Well I'll tell you what. They stopped making 500cc two strokes years ago because they were too fast. There is not a bike in that shop behind you that would get near this thing in a drag race. Is your CRF faster than all the bikes in that shop? They look at each other and say "no way." When you go in there you will only find two stroke bikes up to 300 cc. Then these guys start to get keen and become inquisitive. Good pair of lads with absolutely no idea of what we do.

Took a heap of pics and will put them up in a couple of days.

Thank you to everyone that made the effort to make this thing a success.

They are just astounded when they come to a club day ........"Shite there fast"~"Cant believe how fast they are" !! etc

Great to read it was a success  8)

Good on ya fellas, great idea, inspiration and execution from a kick ass bunch of can dooers!

I would have loved to catch up with some old faces and generally be a part of the numbers.
But my voice reason prevailed! Instead a day from me would probably be better measured by heeding the call to arms, brush cutters etc and BBQ, of our revered NSW Generalissimo for the next Sundays 14th July woking-bee at the fast becoming all-weather Bulabedelah Complex.

As already suggested, somewhere, Many hands make light work and an earlier drive home 8) And you can savour my culinary BBQing Skills :)

As the old saying goes, shit happens and I was lucky to get the one there....but I was glad I did. The quality of the bikes was superb, there wasn't a shitbox anywhere near the place ;).

It was my first foray into a VMX and I brought the RM down as an excuse to meet some people in the sport and put some faces to names on this website

I really enjoyed meeting many of the guys and talking to some of the punters as well

I will definitely try and get to some upcoming Heaven events in the not too distant future

Thanks again to all

Hi Justin,
Come to the HEAVEN Buladelah event in two weeks. There will be recreational riding all Saturday arvo. If you don't want to race on the Sunday that will be fine, just ride Sat arvo at your pace and leisure. Plenty of us do that. That way you can view first hand what it's all about. You can camp for free on the Friday and Saturday nights or get a room at the local pub or motel just up the road.

Did you get a info pack off me on the weekend with the flyer and calendar dates?

Mia and I stayed at the motel next to the Grey Gums Hotel on Saturday night........and of course sampled their liquid refreshments throughout the day on Saturday........to book in to the motel in the afternoon, you had to walk through the Poker Machine Room to get to Motel Reception.......when I saw the colour of their seats I suggested to The Boss, This Must Be a Sign to invest to ACCUMULATE......She agreed, and some time later we POCKETED a COOL $1000.......I LOVE PURPLE AND LIME GREEN !!...... ;D :o
