In the early/mid seventies,Rockhampton Motorcycle Club used to regularly run beach races at Farnborough beach near Yeppoon.
I had a TM cyclone kit on my TS400L(first model)stripped down for MX and it went like the clappers. Finally a place where that crazy engine could be used to full advantage.
Big capacity road bikes with knobblies and scramble bars were used as well as MX bikes of all makes and sizes.SC 500 Yamahas were also one of the weapons of choice. Bikes were geared for 90+mph.
The format was a 44gallon drum at each end of the beach then racing round 1/4 mile track, then 1/2 mile track, then mile.
The sand at low tide could be like concrete and it could also have some soft "surprises" as well.Massive high speed slides around the drums were the order of the day.Dont go too wide or you could end up in the drink !
This racing was great high speed fun.Drag races and handicap races were held over the same drum distances during the day.
I am sure the fun Police would have put a stop to this nonsense by now.
Are any of my competitors on the forum?

I was watching the Burt Munro thing last night on classic restos.Hill climb combined with the beach races there was a pretty quick rudge 500cc 36 model convereted to cast iron heads with enclosed rocker gear so he could beach race it after he does the tar road hill climb. They also intervewed some big hairy kiwi fella with a 70 triumph with a different swingarm and front end was a road bike converted to race vmx and also do the beach races it was a pretty quick bike on the sand.

Used to go to the beach races at Grasstree beach just outside of Mackay. Mick Hansen on a quick cr500 Honda was the king of the beach for years. They threw everything at from big 4 road bikes to suped up 450fs. Winced one year when a beautifully newly restored Hagon jawa took on the beach. Grasstree really suits mx ers as the top sand is soft and develops ruts.
All the juniors particularly liked picking a part of the pit area dumping the clutch and digging a nice rear wheel hole till it cases out. Step of it, no need for stands, it stays there and is just as much fun to fire out of before heading to the next race.
Queensland nice one day and 1955 the next. Where else could you still go beach racing in oz?

Yes Tony, I remember it too, tho I was only a junior at the time on the Sherpa S. I remember one guy on a 750/4 Honda w a knobby. Don't remember any soft surprises tho. Sure they weren't from the TS?
