Just had an idea. It seems everybody on here enjoys the odd classic photo (I certainly do!) What about if your keen, post up your definitive, all time favourite shot. Something to you that epitomises what VMX is all about. I'm looking forward to it.
Rules: There aren't any however just to put the pressure on try to restrict it to 1 shot / forum member
Cheers Jerry PS you need not have taken the shot!

This'd be one of mine..

Roger's in the top photo in my post #41 but I admit it's a blink and you miss him situation ::). At the risk of repeating a photo from another thread, here's a cool shot of my hero and friend Per Klitland winning the Christmas Hills Grand National in '72 on a 400 Maico that I briefly owned a year later. It still exists with a country NSW owner and it occasionally comes out for a dirt track skid.

Yeah I agree HVA61, Graham Noyce looks pretty comfortable on it as well. Who knows what he could have done if he had of stuck with Maico for a few more years, maybe even that elusive world championship.

I'd have thought that #18 Maico would be Per Klitland as #18 was his number but if it's 1976 he'd have signed with Yamaha. The body language of the rider doesn't look like the old Dane either. I was living overseas by then so I'll go with my learned fellow members thoughts on who it is.......
10 MINUTES LATER........ Now I look harder I think the Maico is #8.

Warning::slight thread hijack
It's not widely known that Graeme Noyces first factory ride was for Rickman on the highly modified Rickman Montesa framed Husky 360. Noyce did his apprenticeship at Rickman and he built the Husky himself in the race shop after work. That would be a great 'works bike' to replicate........Rickman Monty frame/forks and wheels, Hi-Point/Homelite alloy tank, Preston Petty mudguards and a 360 Husky motor.

Very rare Rickman Husky 400cc they built for Graham Noyce who worked for Rickman brothers as an apprentice.

Hey GMC,
Is that a young Dave Hammond in the hotel room with that YZ 250 ??? ???
Mr Maico #54
Yes that’s a young Dangerous Dave.
Dave behind the bike, Russel Evans (SA) in chair, behind him Ian Roe, (Vic) and further back is Lyndon Heffernan (NSW)
It was our second night in the USA and we had met Malcolm Smith that day at his shop in Riverside. Dave & Ian had bought the YZ’s from him and where else do you keep new bikes but in your motel room. They were covering their bikes with contact to try to keep them looking good in order to get a good price for them at the end of the trip. Ian had decided it would be easier if he took the tank off the bike and was fitting the contact with the tank on his lap, no one noticed at the time that fuel was dribbling out of the breather hose onto the carpet. We tried to mop it up but it had soaked into the carpet making it rise up in a big bubble. We had to sit a chair on the bubble everyday to hold it down so the motel owners didn’t notice when they came in to clean the rooms.
Classic times.
-
What a bloody awesome pic, these young blokes must have felt on top of the world.
cheers Dale.

Flyin Mike Brown was actually a minicycle super-star in the era of Brian Myerscough and Jeff Ward, he got hurt attempting a distance jump after his mx career finished.

Good shot Tony, the subject's a fairly decent handler too. How's the old man going mate?

He's doing ok - was supposed to have an aftermarket knee upgrade fitted this morning, but the hospital postponed at the last minute. (as he was being wheeled down to surgery!) ::)
So looks like it'll be next week or the week after..
Poor bugger's been hanging to ride the KDX400 I got for him, but can't until the knee's been done... Oh well, he'll just have to wait an extra couple of weeks.. ;D

He's doing ok - was supposed to have an aftermarket knee upgrade fitted this morning, but the hospital postponed at the last minute. (as he was being wheeled down to surgery!)
That exact same thing happened to me in 2011 while being wheeled in for my ankle fusion surgery. A nurse spotted an open wound scratch on my shin and they cancelled because of the possibility of me catching Golden Staph infection. Six months later and totally scratch free I had the operation and promptly got Golden Staph anyway ::). I too am waiting for my knee replacement so he and I are blood almost brothers ;D.

i recently had a knee op and wondered why the pre-op nurses keep looking at a very tiny small graze i had on my knee.
i now know how lucky i was to get done.

Doug Domokos he was a bloody legend :) he came to the UK in about 1978 and put on an exhibition at the Dirt Bike Show run by Martin Christie .
Martin is a mate of mine and supported me when I was a junior racer , Doug stayed at Martins (where I spent most of my time back then ) and to a 15 yr old MX nut he was just the coolest dude ever 8) His stories of stunts and things they got up to back in the states kept us entertained for hrs, he gave me a big bag of stickers DG and Scott ones mainly.
At that time I was the local wheelie king in our area ( on a push bike or dirt bike and kids used to come from other areas to try their luck against me, ole Domestos told me "you can go as far back as you like just dab that rear brake and it will come back everytime " .
He rode a KLX 250 ? and I helped him fit an electric motor to the forks to keep the front wheel spinning while wheelieing .
Took he on the back and wheelied about 3 miles up the A3 ( main London rd ) passing cars and waving to the chicks 8)
When went out to the army parade ground at Aldershot where he wheelied a Kawa Z1 across the parade ground dragging the rear guard on the pavement .
Was only in town for a week but I will never forget Domestos as we called him :)
I heard he was killed in a plane accident a few years back , couldn't have been that old but shit he sure packed in a lot to what years he had :)
-
What a buzz as a young bloke to run into "Domestos" that's right up there in the famous blokes I have run into department. J

Great story Bill....memories like that last a lifetime. When I lived in California in the very early 80's, Belmont Shore the small community I lived in held an annual Festival of the Sea which included a ski race, yacht regatta and for some reason they blocked 2nd street, the main drag and held a a classic car, hot rod and bike show'n'shine. It must have been 1980 or so and one if the attractions was Doug Domokos wheelying down the 2 km street and back down the other way on (I think) a KLX. By today's standards it was fairly average but back then he was the king and he had the crowd going apeshit. A few months later I was back in Oz and I remember seeing Doug on the 6 o'clock news, wheelying all the way across the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a predecessor to appearing at one of the Sydney Showground supercross events. He was certainly a showman and from all reports, a nice bloke

Have a look at that rear sprocket!! J
-
That's huge ;D
As Firko says what DD did back in the day was by todays stds a bit ordinary , but back then he was the king of cool 8)
That's the great thing about forums like this , if I tell anyone from todays era about it then they don't get it ::) it "yeah but did he do a one handed double backflip while tweeting his mates and filming the whole thing on his gopro and is it on facebook" ::)
-
Exactly Bill! J
-
As Firko says what DD did back in the day was by todays stds a bit ordinary , but back then he was the king of cool 8)
Mate, today I still think DD was cool ... and like Firko, I recall the z1300 wheelie across Sydney Harbour bridge ... something that has never left me 8) 8)
-
My wheelie moment was standing spellbound watching a helmet less De Coster pop a mono on the RN370 with a blonde promo girl on the back out at Calder for the International MOTORcrosse. I've never been the same dice! Anyone else on here witness that? J
-
DD was amazing to watch. I remember seeing him go for a record at Rosehill race course on a TS250X suzuki with a powered front wheel. He missed the record but still managed about 30 laps!
I also have a vague recollection of the late Dale Buggins challenging DD to a wheelie contest OVER the Harbour bridge. DD declined....
-
I think there is footage of him on youtube at one of the early eighties supercross's at Sydney. Monoing around the track!

I was there, sitting right above the two semi flat decks they used to get in the grandstand with a nice 180 degree berm at the top.
Doug did the entire track on the back wheel. So, not to be outdone, the bobcat operator did it as well!!! Awesome

What bike is that? Looks like an '83 cr250, but there is a rear loop ( to put his foot on?) and looks white in colour. The rear brake stay isn't right for an '83 either.

Are you sure that it was DD at Rosehill Racecourse???
I am sure it was a certain Beetle Bailey on my TS250X trying to set the new Australian Distance Wheelie Record.
-
My memory was Beatle Bailey on a TS 250x but the wind picked up and hindered his effort. Thought it was the motorcycle expo at Canterbury race course tho'

Yep that looks like a 1983 250 RD to me.

Yes I remember that. I raced in that meet. At the time I was friends with a Revs Magazine writer who was one of the organizers of Doug wheelying across the Harbour Bridge. I was driving one of the cars that drove behind and in front of him to keep the other traffic at a distance. Amazing to watch.

I sit corrected gents.... It was indeed Beetle Bailey and it was at Canterbury race course.....
Ahh the joys of a mis spent youth! :-\

I was pretty impressed with this add as a 14 year old in 1974. I was lucky enough to buy a brand new M1 Elsinore in 1975 and all I wanted to do was emulate this photo. I think the rider is Brian Martin.

The guy with the pole is extricating his ride from a bog "with-out outside assistance" as there was an FIM official near-by. I think the story goes that the crowd helped him later on when the official moved on to observe someone else :D :D ::)
-
I think there is footage of him on youtube at one of the early eighties supercross's at Sydney. Monoing around the track!
I was there, sitting right above the two semi flat decks they used to get in the grandstand with a nice 180 degree berm at the top.
Doug did the entire track on the back wheel. So, not to be outdone, the bobcat operator did it as well!!! Awesome
Yes I remember that. I raced in that meet. At the time I was friends with a Revs Magazine writer who was one of the organizers of Doug wheelying across the Harbour Bridge. I was driving one of the cars that drove behind and in front of him to keep the other traffic at a distance. Amazing to watch.

that is a marvel of engineering, is it early 70"s ?
-
Mid 60s, was 67 or 68 that 6 speeds became the maximum allowable along with a maximum number of cylinders depending on engine size on the grounds of safety even though the restrictions were more about money, all the Japanese factories pulled out of running works bikes when that happened
From memory 1 of the little Hondas pulled 20 000+ rpm & had 18 gears, 6 speeds inside the box & a 3 speed box externally similar to what pushbikes had controlled by the left twist grip.
Truly a time of pure racebike engineering

No, only a sketch as it never raced. Suzuki canned it at the end of 1967 when the rule restrictions came in.

This is the RK67 50cc twin it was to replace, so it would no doubt have closely resembled this chassis-wise. Lovely wee things...

I think Honda was the one who took there bat and ball and went running home Tony, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki where into 2 strokes so it didn't effect then the same. Those multi's where pieces of art. Honda didn't go back GP racing till the 80's I think. Honda had a 6 cylinder 250cc 4 stroke RR bike and all sorts of cool bikes, I see there's a couple of nice TZ350's for sale on Trade Me at the moment.

Mike the Bike on the 6 cylinder Honda, don't know where or when. I was pit crewing for a RR outfit at Bathurst in the '70s, Mike was there riding a Manx so, I asked him to autograph this pic for me.
When asked how the big H handled, SMBH reportedly replied " Like a three legged camel in loose sand"
I also remember seeing and hearing Kel Carruthers and Jim Redman together on their 250 Honda fours at Oran Park, in the '60s, bloody grouse sound.
Bloody near lost this prized memento in a house fire in 1979, hence slightly burnt top edge of the pic,

Firko / Dave what's the story Re: the Maico? I'm curious. J
-
Jerry, I rode the arse off that maico/ Honda , which I built myself and passing Elsinore 125 down the main straight at the Australian Titles at Barrabool., in the over 40`s 125, finally got 3rd overall in the final of VMX Title. Their is more to the story, It was a battle between John Budd, Elsinore, John Boag Zundapp, Me Maico, plus their was firko mate on a 1975 Suzuki, T bone as well. John Budd, ask me to keep Boagy away from him.
Which I did, but one lap I passed them all, it was great racing and good fun, But a week later after the meeting was all over I was accused of cheating. ::) by Firko, so to be fare to all I gave my title up and trophy back, also firko mate was cheating too, his suzuki being a 75 model. Which I didn't care at the time. 8)
Quickest bike, great to ride.
Gee, I wish I still had the maico.

Stan, there are very clever people in this world, I love the Honda RC6, and the wheels and forks being made.
-
Paul, Dave's bike was a 200cc or something close to that from what I've been told......there is no way a 125cc 4 stroke Honda is going to go past a 125cc 2 stroke Honda Elsinore in a straight line ;)
-
Great opportunity to confess all Dave?? J

What class was this? I would have thought a 200 4 stroke z fair match for a 125 2 stroke?. Didn't know they were running them together in the one class?
-
What was wrong with the bike?
It was a battle between John Budd, Elsinore, John Boag Zundapp, Me Maico, plus their was firko mate on a 1975 Suzuki,
I'll leave Dave to explain whether his bike had an XR200 motor or not but I will go to the defence of my friend. Dave keeps claiming that Mick Cram who ended up getting the third place trophy after Dave was eventually disqualified was riding a '75 TM Suzuki. MA dealt with the case and found Micks bike to be a proper '74 model with confusion being caused by the bike being fitted with a '75 model starburst logo tank, so any allegations of Mick himself cheating were dismissed. They also found Dave's little Maico to be "a tad large" for the 125 class. For the record Mick Cram didn't protest Dave, as disappointed as he was when he found out he'd been beaten by an allegedly oversized bike, he still opted to let it go. The protest came from elsewhere after officials were informed by other racers that the engine in the Maico was from a later, post 75 model.
Thankfully situations such as the above are these days few and far between because most racers know the drill and eligibility knowledge has improved to the point that it's pretty hard to pull a swifty without someone spotting it.

Well Mark Thats good ready, all new to me, My bike could have been a 350cc, and it could have been a 125cc, truthfully I have no idea, as far as I was concern, the bike was a 125cc, not 200cc or 185cc. (Quote) they also found dave`s little maico to be a tad large, well I would like to know who found my bike was a tad larger, because no one said anything to me on the day of the Titles, only you Mark a week or 2 later. and as for MA, nothing was mention to me, I gave up the title because of all the bullshit that you were saying about me and you were going to write bullshit in Australian Dirt Bike. Magazine about me being a Cheat. Plus I didn't even Know the size of the engine, The famous Hallam Brothers built the engine, they are well known for their engine building.
-
Dave, why would you give up your placing and not know the capacity of the bike you were riding. Surely if you were in the right you would have it checked out and tell the world ???
-
monte, l bought the engine complete and running off Ken wiltshire, from terang motorcycle wreckers victoria, Ken is well Known for his speedway sprint Midgets. I also bought the rolling Maico Frame off ken too, Even Ken
didn't know the size of the engine, but we did no that it was a very good engine and being build by The Hallams, its was going to be a ripper. and it proved itself, the Hallam Brothers engineering Knowledge is outstanding.
-
Sooooooo...still no real answer ??? ???
someone get that bike and pour a cup of tea down the plug hole FFS ::)
-
So what answer do you want, thats it from me, its all past history, just memories, then sold it off to a fellow in the csc.
-
Dave......You knew quite well that the engine was dodgy mate. A member of this forum spotted that it was a late model engine from 20 paces at dusk with 6 beers up ;D. He's the one that bought it to the attention of others standing around, one of who who happened to be an official. The only thing I had to do with the situation was to report on it after you'd been relieved of the placing because Mick Cram was being accused of cheating by you and I knew Micks bike was kosher. You know that I reported the situation correctly Dave, you just plain got caught with a dodgy engine. I don't know how big it was either but someone did and it would have been them that made the decision at MA. I go with Davy's assumptions that your bike was performing a tad too well for an SL125. You were way too close to Boagy and John Budd to be on a 125 4 stroke....you should have peddled off a little to draw attention away from you ;).
-
Anyway, Mark, its all Guns and Roses now.
-
dave if theres one thing i do know that is you are no mug on a bike,a good rider. So when you were passing elsinores and up front you must have thought may be its oversize. Just a pity it was nationals as would have been a great bike at the fun meetings that are about now.
-

Hold on a minute. If Dave didn't want the dark past brought up he shouldn't have posted a provocative photo. Dave knows quite well what the reaction to that photo would incite...in fact I'm surprised more people didn't comment. Don't get sucked in Rookie, Dave does what he does to get attention...he loves it. If he didn't love the attention he would have stopped with the "keeper" posts years ago. I like Dave on a face to face basis but I sometimes shake my head at some of his actions. He wasn't the only bloke to get caught cheating that weekend but he's the only one that still gets mentioned, mainly due to his own recycling of the situation.

The Ossa Byra. Yeah, because sometimes a Yankee 500 twin isn't enough... ::)
-
OOPS :(
Known as the "Ossa Mayor" ("The big Bear"), this bike is one of the most charismatic in the history of Spanish motorcycles, and masterpiece from the engineer Fernando Batlló.
Starting from the base of a Yankee engine, to which he added two extra cylinders, one either side, making it to a 977 cc. four cylinders. Driven by his sons, Jesus
and Javier, the bike showed great potential, after electrical problems were solved first and traction (transmission of power to the ground) afterwards.
The frame was inspired on the Yankee one due to the
almost 100HP delivered."
Personal note: I have read that with cylinders from a Phantom and special exhausts the bike delivered 115 HP.

I bet this hurt . Still hanging on to the bars though, so he still thinks he might be able to save it. Lucky he has all the safety gear on , like the sandshoes and denim shorts. This thread probably belongs in the photo section.

Dave I just realised the Velocette is a mono shock. Do you know if that was standard or is that bike a 'special' J

...and here I was thinking Yamaha invented the monoshock and Maico invented leading axle forks..

What about the throttle cable on Mert's Harley flapping about in the breeze there ! Pretty scary in amongst a bunch of willing young men diving into a turn...

No Jerry, Not sure, new to me too, and very interesting. found this.
VELOCETTE MSS 500
It seems so strange now, but before the 1960s, dirt bikes usually had the same chassis as their road-going counterparts. And if you wanted a bike to race, you could order a basic engine and frame from the factory, and then finish the machine to your own specification.
In France, you were known as a “compé-client,” or competition client. And that’s how this lovely 1955 Velocette Scrambler started its life. Owned by a friend of Vincent Prat (of the Southsiders MC), it was ridden by a local pilot for several seasons until the frame broke under the stresses of off-road competition.
This particular Scrambler was a factory-built machine based on the MSS 500. Power was boosted from 18 to 35 hp, thanks to components from the more powerful Venom—including the camshaft. The bike is also running a BTH Racing Magneto and an equally rare Amal 10TT9 carburetor.
According to Vincent, the Velocette languished at the back of a garage for several years after the frame was damaged. In the 1960s, a mechanic turned the broken rear frame into a lever-armed shock absorber, and the Velocette was once again pressed into competition.
The bike could not be set up correctly, and it was sold on in frustration. It was passed from one owner to another, each one putting his own stamp on it—such as a new seat, and a gas tank from a Motobécane.
The Velocette is now in safe hands, though. The current owner is part-way through a complete restoration, and the frame and vintage “mono-shock” will be properly optimized.
Isn’t it good to know that there are still people out there who care
