when this video comes up--click on the one down the side that shows Herlings--Cairoli  etc practising on a deep rutted sand track, gosh i'll be loosing sleep after seeing that, how riding fit would you have to be to go that hard non stop!!. As for the bmx bike down hawkstone hill. was going well till then--ouch, poor guy.

Have a look at "A couple of laps of Hawkstone. They are starting at the bottom of the infamous "Hill". the footage gives no idea of how steep it is. I couldnt get up it on all fours, let alone walk up it. the initial two metres of the drop off is vertical.
I rode a tired 75 KX250 in 2000 and nearly s--- myself ( I think all that saved me was I was wearing my flash new pants- still am ) Luckily some kind soul lent me a Maico 490 on the second day.
