Title: Molasses rust treatment.
Post by: firko on May 05, 2013, 03:09:03 pm
I need to remove the  surface rust inside of a tank and recall molasses being recommended by a few folks on here. I can't find the relevant posts so can someone with experience in the process give me the scoop on what I need to do? I need to know things like how much do I dilute the molasses? How long to I keep it in the tank? Is there any post treatment tips on preventing the rust from returning?

Mark, PM feetupfun. As I recall, you dilute it till it just starts to flow, but beyond that talk to feetup.

Hi Mark

There is a sh1tload of info on the net re molasses - the stuff is great and you can nearly drink it and it is unbelievable when you plunge your arm into a solution that rips off rust as it does without your skin peeling off in the process ! From memory I diluted it 1:6 with good results but haven't had the need to use it for a good while.

This guy gives a good show of how it works too !

Another good method to look at is electrolytic rust removal using Bicarbonate of Soda and a battery charger - tried it recently with good results too.
