Title: 86 300 gs burning g/box oil
Post by: gra1961 on May 05, 2013, 08:04:02 am
have an 86 300gs had been sitting for bout 5 yrs due to corroded out water pump housing, replaced and run the bike but was burning g/ox oil, replaced crank seal with gen seal but still smokes badly.drained g/box oil and started and run it for about 30 seconds,no smoke.would be unusual to be sucking it in thru crankcase gasket I would think.anyone think of where else it may be getting thru ?cheers gregg

Through your case halves between crank area and gearbox. Maybe a faulty gasket.

If you aren't sure whether the bikes burning gearbox oil (or if the pipe is full of old oil smoking) put a little Castrol R into the gearbox (with the existing lubricant, not instead of :D) - you'll smell it in the exhaust.

go the crank gasket for sure. try the Castrol r trick, will defiantly confirm or deny the need for a costly time consuming rebuild when all you want to do is ride it.....
