Hi all,
Has any body fitted gold valves to the husky 40mm fork?
I have done all the machine work and adapter work the only thing i am not to sure on is the pre load on the fork springs with the gold valve and adapter it adds 40mm and when the spring is fitted i end up with about 70 mm of pre load the fittment guild say it should be 15mm to 25mm do i cut the spring?

You'll have to cut the springs to get the right preload.. And they're actually cartridge emulators not gold valves.

If I cut the spring this does not leave a flat end would this not dig into to fork cap?

Cutting the spring will stiffen spring overall but you have little choice. Cut the spring with an side grinder, heat the last half coil with oxy flatten and quench in oil and grind off flat.
You really need to consider fitting a new linear spring as most older '70s/'early '80s springs are progressive and well past there best anyway. I would consider new corrcetly weighted springs if you want to get the best from the emulators.
'gold valves' proprietry name for the replacement valves for later modern shocks etc. PD valves & emulators are the correct name but everyone seems to call them gold valves and we all know what you mean.

Yes as Montynut says cut the spring and heat and bend end flat. Most vintage bikes need firmer springs so shortening may not be a problem, can't remember if Husky springs are progressive or not, if they are cut the end with the tightly wound coils to remove some of the progression.
If needed you can probably get new Racetech springs from Shock Treatment in the desired length.

You can use a piece of PVC pipe carved on an angle to suit the cut spring end if you don't have access to a gas torch. Works a treat on all my conversions.

I will probably do the same and install Gold Valves in my Husky, but would probably opt for a new set of springs at the same time, as mont has suggested. This approach seems to have worked well in my KX now I have the gold valve pre-load sorted.
