HOw much can you get Uni filter tube style for 57mm?  i been using the green one but they seem to fall apart after a while, you rub finger on them and the foam balls up and fall off, whats the go there ? even with those foam cover they seem to do the same, have i got old stock foam or dotn they like petrol or somthing.  Im looking for an alternative or a better run with them.

Most brands of filters don’t like petrol, some more so than others.
Petrol, Metho, Diesel & Kero will all have a detrimental effect on the filter material

Unifilter recommends Mineral turps for cleaning, or their own “Foam filter Cleaner” rinsed out with water
&
Any mineral based  filter oil such as their own Filter fix, Belray or Castrol

Unifilter filter cleaner      1 Ltr-$ 20.75   5 Litr. $ 65.00

Unifilter filter oil         0.25 Ltr $ 9.30    0.5 Ltr $ 12.95
                                   1 Ltr. $ 20.7      5 Ltr. $ 65.00

Pods are available in many different sizes, the closest for you is either 55mm I.D or 60mm I.D - 100mm long & 80mm O.D. & either in straight or 30 deg. Angle
Any of these options are…
$ 27.50   for the Pod
$ 9.30   for the optional second stage sock
$ 44.00   for the kit, Pod, Sock & 250ml filter fix oil
$ 4.50 postage

yes i usually A) forget to kleen them or b) do so inleft over 2 stroke fuel then rinse in warm water.

I would say there are about 8-10 of the green little forkers here all peeling/rotting out some on layed up bikes which cant be good for them, even the stage covers are rooted to.

I have had better success with the K&M which are a little more $  but seem to last foreva and dont rot out.  But they seem to be like hens teeth to find at a reasonable price in Au.

I cant get my head around the foam rotting if its designed for a petrol induction bike you think they would use solvent proof foam.   The Twin air on my 01 KTm is the original filter and looks perfect even after heaps of the same washes.  Do twin air make tube filters in 57mm they seem to have a much more stable foam and might be a good price to  ?

Freaky,
I found the same problem with some uni-filter filters even when using the no-toil concuction.
i have been using Motorex air filter cleaner on all my filters for about 18months now and it is the best stuff I have even used bar none.
Try it you won't regret it.

I've had the same trouble with the Uni filter on my Maico. It wouldn't be 2 years old and it's gone rotten, the foam tore easily when i went to remove it to wash it. Not sure if it's the petrol i wash it in or motul filter oil that has destroyed it.

When all else fails, read the instructions :o

Unifilter recommends Mineral turps for cleaning, not petrol

with the grey foam universal unifilter road bike pods you are not ment to use normal air filter oil. the instructions say soak in a 50/50 mix of petrol and engine oil only, wipe off access and allow fuel to evaporate off. they say normal foam filter oil restricts them. so if they sayssoak them in fuel and oil before fitting i would assume it would be safe to wash these pods in fuel. the instructions say this and its the first time ive seen these intsructions with unifilters. i would say that fuel on their other filters is still a no no though and you should use mineral turps only. any way this really surprised me when i came across this.

We had unifilter custom make a few filters for our EMC CZ airbox.  It was cheap-as to get them made up and we've never had a problem with the filters.

My filter cleaning method:

5L of turps from bunnings
2 buckets with lids from bunnings
1 round cake cooling stand from the supermarket
A metal clothes hanger
Rubber gloves

Put cake cooling stand in bottom of bucket 1.  Put about 3-4L of turps in there.
Hot soapy water (I find a cap of truckwash works fine) in bucket 2.

Put the dirty filter in bucket 1.  Slosh it around.  The cake stand will prevent the filter touching the bottom of the bucket where all the dirt is.  Squeeze all the excess turps out, but don't wring the filter.

Chuck it in the hot soapy water and work it through the filter.  Dispose of the soapy water on the lawn or something (it will be slightly tainted with turps).  Give the filter a quick rinse under a tap.

Cut the coat hanger on one side near the hook, bend the sharp end over.  Feed on all of your freshly cleaned filters (I can fit 4 on one hanger) and hang on washing line or in shed somewhere to drip dry.

Put the lid on the turps bucket and store.  I can get nearly a season out of the same turps, as long as you have something in there to stop the filter touching the bottom of the bucket.

niCE layout 555, good explaination, similar to what it do without the fancy cake stand :O)   but the Uni still peel out after 12 months, were yours a custom foam or the same old green shit as we are struggling with?

freakshow, the grey ones are out of the unifilter catalogue road bike section they are universal road bike pods but in the special grey foam for road bikes. the offroad unifilters are red and green i put them on a 78 KZ650. different sizes are available and yes you could use  a outer sock over them. i would go fot their proper offroad pods though. download their catalgue off the australian unifilter website. all the info you willl ever need to know is all in there

Yeah you can use fuel and see no problems but there will be. the fuel opens up the pores of the foam more and lets larger particles through. just because it doesnt look damaged doesnt mean its not. your choice though

NR555 I'm surprised the turps dosen't stuff the plastic bucket as flameable products are stored in fluro plastic and I dout your buckets are made from fluro plastic.jimson

I've only ever used Twin-air filter de-greaser in a Twin-air bucket (with the wire thing in the bottom like 555 is talking about), rinse in warm water with a bit of disho and then rinse in water. I only ever use Uni Filters and I've had some for years. As good as the day I bought them I reckon!  :)

the only problems with unifilters ive seen are after about 10 yrs they wear out and the glued seams come apart. i bought a nos PE one though and it just fell to bits in my hand >:(.

when washing filters i use Chux multi purpose rubber gloves. they are the only gloves ive found from the supermarket that can handle fuel and turps.

Ok spoke to big kahuna at UNi filter, they sent 2 new filter and sleeves.   Word from god is never wash in water thats what kills them.  IF you cant get them crunchy dry moisture is retained in filter and when you oil it you trap the water in ther again and so on. he said they is no real need to wash out filters especially if you used petrol, turps or some other oil based products..  MAde lots of sence they way he explained it.

Seeings as he was good enough to provide 2 new filter set $80 + for nicks im going to  do the right things and follow his cleaning program and see how long they last this way.

2 thumbs up to Uni filter for sticking behind there product when asked to

Yes, I have to agree with that, petrol gases expand and explode the foam bubbles were as turps doesnt. Luckily Im a painter and turps is readily avialable but the taste is shite, (I must stop getting on the turps) ;D

Down side of the 754....... got to buy four filters, four spark plugs, four plug caps etc etc............. I use four of the gray road bike type, inside a  cutaway and converted  standard air box ., These have been excellent for some years as compared to the early green ones which last one season if lucky before breaking up.

What poor Robin was trying to say is 'filter skins'
We use these on my sons race bike going way back and for my money I reckon they are good value.
They are abit like the mesh in stockings - not the fishnet ones that Paul wears but the fine mesh of course - it keeps the course shit out of the foam and prolongs filter service intervals so the filters are not abused as much let alone washed in petrol Don't ever use petrol to wash anything - it wrecks filters and the benzine blended into it is a known carcigen - now that is a worry!
To get the water out of the filter, especially if you are doing it at the last minute pre race etc wait for the missus to go out and then dry the filter in the tumble dryer on a gentle (warm) heat - normally 20 mins and its done
