Title: New member fell in love with a YZ125D bought it and now what to do with it
Post by: Paul552 on November 19, 2012, 05:06:18 pm
Like the heading says
I just bought a YZ125D off a real nice dude that was into VMX.

It looks 100% stock.

I was thinking about cleaning it up and racing VMX.

Don't really know where to start so I thought this would be a good place to start!

Congratulations.  Was that the one on ebay for $1500?  If so it looked like a clean original bike and I was thinking of buying that myself to accompany my YZ250D and YZ400D.

If you're not familiar with what you need to do to get it race ready, maybe look into joining a club close by and getting some assistance from the members there.  Most will be happy to see another bike on the track and willing to help you out.

Where are you located?

Cheers
Simo

Welcome aboard TFR!

Good solid bikes, those 125Ds. Make sure it's in good condition, and go and ride it.
Far too many people delay their entry into VMX participation because they feel the need to build some world beater bike...
I should have started racing 15 years earlier than I did - the bike I was turning into a world beater is stashed in the back of the shed, in a million bits... Meanwhile the two bikes I just bought and rode (including my 125D) have both been to plenty of events. :)

Back to your 125D:
There's a million possible upgrades. Don't worry about them, and ignore anyone who suggests that you "need" them, particularly if this is your first foray into racing.
When you race it, you'll quickly form a list of things you want to improve/change.

I'd suggest a thorough look at the bike, and make sure it's mechanically sound.
A basic rebuild of the shock absorber and a change of fork oil is a good move - one that's often overlooked.
Make sure the footpegs are tight on the frame. They eventually strip the splines if run loose.

Good luck, have fun, and see you out there.

Yeh I was hoping to clean it and do a quick rebuild and have a go.

I'm not much of a rider so I am pretty sure I will slow it down more than the required upgrades would.

Thanks again Paul

Welcome TFR,
Next year in your area is proposed to be a biggie. With Classic Nationals at the pointy end of pricing to be held in the Canberra area and then there is Classic Dirt 10 the extreme lower price with a casual weekend (2 days)of camping,swapmet,entertaniment,Vinduro(enduro),Trials,Pre75 mx track and pre85 mx track.
Along with a few legends laps and many forum members making the pilgramage.
Stay tuned to the fourm and you'll get endless venue/event dates to ride your yz125 in NSW, come 2013.
Enjoy  8)
