Title: Legalities of copying parts
Post by: 35elsinore on November 16, 2012, 06:59:49 pm
Does anyone know what the lagalities of reproducing parts for old bikes are. eg: do patents etc runout after a certain time frame etc.
This may change from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Cheers Troy

I can't say for sure, Troy, but I did read on the Reproduction Decals site that they only do reproductions of decals that are no longer available from the original manufacturer.
Maybe that's got something to do with the laws?
But they're in Canada I think and they're laws maybe different to here.

That didn't help much, did it?  ::)

Patents last for 20 years in Australia (and most of the free world in believe), but trademrks last for as long as their registered.

Decals would be covered by trademark, a widget with a particular feature would be patent (or both if it had a logo on it)

Disclaimer; i do not practice law. :) Do not rely upon this infirmation

I was looking into producing engine stator covers. Most of which probabley have the manufacturer on them. I was keen on having them look original, but maybe leaving the name eg. honda off of them.

i reckon if you have the skills there is good money to be made for Honda clutch cases 125,250 & 500 from around 1982 - 1990 made in aluminium as the OEM magnesium case  corrode the water pump out. >:(

put me down for 1 only 1986 CR250RG  & 1 only 1985 CR500RF

Someone in the states used to do a cr125 m stator cover. Another in the uk has done the cr125 '83 model. You won't get any grief from the small numbers you would do. I run the gauntlet more than that when I had some bar pads made up with the fox logo on it. Again I only did a small number of them. Go for it I say.
I will buy an 85 cr500 one off you if you do that one.

husky clutch covers for a/c and l/c of the 80s are being reproed by HVA factory in the UK ,(cast then milled) so I wouldnt see it an issue.
mind you husky has changed hands several times since then
Any no. of ignition covers out there.
Surely its not an issue if NOS is n/a?

Interestingly HVA Factory have stopped making repro alloy clutch covers. They would have been expensive to get made and even selling for $400 Aus he is not going to make anymore. Has some left so get in quick! Guess they aren't a license to print money for Huskys anyway :o

I had a phone call once from an angry Bengt Aberg complaining that I had copied his frame.

Turned out to be my mate Dave ::)

My boss was approached earlier this year about making the covers but I don't think the numbers stacked up for it to be viable in the amounts asked about, were there a few different types of covers over the years?

i don't know the exact models that are same but i would say 125, 250 & 500 all differ with each era!

I know 1985 & 86 500 are the same, possibly 1987 -1989 same and possibly onwards from there

1986 & 1987 should be same except for clutch access cover (its on the 87 but not the 86). i have a microfiche here so if you think it may be a goer i can research it.

3 guys on this forum alone would like 85' CR500 covers !

Saw a 85 CR on Marks with a aluminium clutch cover so some one must be making them.

Hoony,

I am lead to believe that the '93 onwards CR 500 covers fit the earlier ones, these are still avaliable from Honda at about $300 and are made from alloy.
They have a different part number to earlier covers due to Honda adding another clutch plate in '93 so the width is increaced slightly and require about 50ml more oil.
They also have slightly different plumbing angles, but this should be easily overcome.
