Anyone know this bike, it could swing me from the open class.

1980 model Maico's are not very popular, different set up to 79 & 81 models

How so?

How so?
Very tall steering head and long front forks with more of a banana shaped profile.. I have a 1980 MC440 and the frame and front forks are very different to my '81 490, the engine, wheels and tank are the same.
The 1980 250 is also Slow...

The '80 model was one of Maico's not so good models. Everything Johnny O said plus the need to use a milk crate to climb aboard, they were so tall ::). I had an '80 440 briefly.

When i first looked at it my first thoughts were it looked like it had ran head on into a wall and bent the head stem and tank mounts but held back posting. Your swinging more than a well hung bloke at a nudist camp John that must be the 5th different style bike you've been swayed by.

magoo chandler didnt mind this model ,but his had a bigger engine

Just considering all my Evo/Pre 85 options :-)

Evo....Maico 490, Pre 85/90..... Honda CR500.......there ya go John, you won't get better open classers than these. Everything else is a little bit less of a bike than this pair ;).

If you look at the photos of those two Maicos it appears that the dogs are looking at each other*. My money's on Lou's Staffy over Paul's foo foo hound if they ever get together ;D.
*What can I say, it's a quiet afternoon and my irony meter is running on empty. ;D

that foo foo hound has already killed and eaten 3 postal delivery men.one morning i went out the front and there on the ground was a box off maico parts and a work boot with a half eaten leg still attached and a van still running in the drive way :P :P :P

At the risk of being ostrasized from this forum, I might respectfully disagree with you Firko on your choice of pre '85/90 wepons, sure the Maico is the best evo bike and is way ahead of anything else in the class (except for maybe for a front brake), but I don't think the cr 500 is that good that it exculdes all the other manufacturers of that era, a KX, YZ or Maico SC 500 are all just as capable as the Honda and in some areas might do a little better. Sometimes less is more when it comes to 50 year old pilots on 500cc 2 strokes ;)

Evo....I was just taking a broad view. As much as I'm a Yamaha fan I don't think that the 490 Yamaha is in the same league as the KX500, CR500 (Honda and Husky) or even the RM500 but I otherwise take your point. My point was that John wouldn't go wrong with either of those bikes. Quite frankly, not too many of us have the gonads to ride an 80's 500, no matter the brand ;D.

The CR500 followed by the YZ490 were the 2 best 500's in '84 and nothings changed... ;)
