Title: 1977
Post by: VMX247 on October 30, 2012, 10:13:35 am
Not much is spoken about the year 1977.Perhaps the forgotton era perhaps not ?
Though in this year, Qld was holding a Unlimited/125 Dirt Track Championship at Caboolture Raceway Kerry Gray(Honda) and Gary Coward(Godden Westlake) takin podiums for the event.
Ted Goddard was winning silver on a Canam for the Six Day Trial in Austria.
Barry Buckley claiming two SA MX Champioships in sidecar class's.
Golden Breed Clothing provide a total of $100,000 for the Mr Motocross series being off shore in NZ at Neil Homes Raceway.................

What were you gazing at in the shop window, making you feel good inside.?
What was at the local mx track styling it up.?
What was the cost of a good quality chain.?

I sat out most of 77 with an RM125A broken crankshaft, as a school kid I coudn't afford to repair.  All my mates bought RM125B's and I was jealous as hell.  Well I've got a 125B now so they can all get stuffed now!  ;-)  LOL

1977 was a great year, my first season in seniors. I bought a new RM125B (one of my favourite bikes of all time) and I went up to B grade.
Great memories of watching MR Motocross at Tivoli with Gunter, Gall, Worrall and Lester Rowley on the big CCM battling with Kiwi's Ivan Miller, Peter Boyle and Peter Ploen... Good times.

I was living by the beach in Belmont Shore, California with a truly gorgeous girl, riding a VB360 Montesa in the desert and working for Stadium Motorsports Corp. I was driving a tricked out '64 Chevy Nova SS, my Honda Civic company car or my girlies brand new VW Superbug convertible. Life was pretty good, probably the best period of my life.

The VB was indeed a good bike Greg but I replaced it with a great bike, a 360 Husky AE auto.

Started my first job on the day the Granville train disaster happened and finished my Speedway carreer at the Syd Showground on the 22nd of October, at 7.35 pm.
Mixed emotions about that year.

This is me at 17 years of age racing my RM125B, No 11, around a track on the outskirts of Hong Kong near the Chinese boarder. My second year of racing Motocross and totally immersed in the sport, hanging out each month for the latest Motocross Action and Dirt Bike to hit the news stands. 77 was an excellent year!

June '77 Singapore.
Got a flat rear in practice and did a 6 minute repair to get to the starting gate in time. Best holeshot ever into a left to set up for the triples. Launched of the first, landed on the second and "almost" cleared the third. Rear caught the lip and an arse over tit with the rest of the pack thundering down.....
Seems the Singapore TV crew were filming the action for a sports segment. So every Friday evening for the next few years, they finished off the sports program with this idiot crashing his brains out.....
Back then, we didn't have them new video fangled things, so the ol' man set up the tripod in front of the TV and ran the motor drive on his SLR.
Could only find 3 of the snaps......

Also, the RM250A was getting tired in comparison to the "B" model release but the big torque pipe and duct tape holding the fenders together still made it competitive...

Bought a Yamaha IT250D and started riding 2 Day enduros. Used to travel from Broken Hill across to Cessnock, and other east coast locations.

Sorry but no pictures from '77, above pic is from the very wet first 4 Day at Cessnock in 78.
