Is this model DT250 1978/79 any good for vinduro I was given one thats been left out side for some years and don,t want to go to the trouble of making a working bike if they are know good. :-\ jimson

I wouldn't be taking out a 2nd mortgage to fix it up. I reckon 4f it's running and needs fork seals then full steam ahead

How ugly is this model I have a early 70s DT1 and they look cool but the mono shock model is so chunky. Does any one know if a twin shock DT400 engine will fit in the frame :-\ are they the same engine mounts .jimson

400 motor fits.
They weigh about as much as a block of flats, and are about two feet wide across the tank (I may be exaggerating, slightly).
But if its cheap and runs, then it would be worth having.

I reckon anything pre 85 is good for vinduro........
For the time-being, Aussie vinduros are generally non-competitive so my opinion is that if you'd like to own and ride one, do it! ;D
FWIW I kinda like the style of the mono DT's but I can understand those that don't. 8)
It would certainly be more reliable than some of those wierdo Euro things.......... :P

Tony its cool if you like the look of them there a bit like a Volvo ;D Nathan mate so if you had a choice would you use DT400 or DT250 engine is bigger better ? Jimson

I had one for awhile. Like Nathan said it was HEAVY and was a torquer, not a revver. Bit shy on ground clearance too.

Hi as far as i know twin shock motor mounts are differrent to mono shock so fame would have to changed .Think it's the front mount. cheers George

Like the others have said, this model is fat and heavy.
What the others didn't say though is that its a horrible pig
I had a 400 new in 77, they're gutless, gobble juice like crazy, I think one trip was 5 tanks to a single XT500 tank, brakes are shite, glaze over very easily with road use, and generaly just a horrible ride.
If it's running it would be okay to ride around I guess but I wouldn't be pouring any money into it.
It wasnt an accident that it was left out in the weather :o

I guess I should see the councillor again but it's just one of those dates that will stay with me for life, just like the scars from the surgery.

G,day GMC yes it was good to have a chat. I,ve realised the bike shouldn,t have come home with me so its going to be put to the back of the shed as a lesson to me. Its just I,m a slow learner the bloody shed is full of lessons. :-[ jimson

I'm with Tony on this one Jimson. I reckon the late 70's monoshock DT's look okay. My brother had a yellow 400. Whilst I was young and impressionable I thought it was a pretty fair thing. If the engines a runner then I'd be making a go of it so long as I didn't have to spend too much. To make the proverbial strawberry jam from shit gives a sense of achievement. (thanks Hoony for that quote ;D) Who knows, you might like the thing. For vinduro even a CT90 could be a ball of fun ;)

I may be a bit harsh with my memories but if it runs then tidy up what you need and go for a ride.
But if you need to start investing in rod kits and stuff then I wouldn’t bother. You would be better off spending your rebuild money on something else.

Hi Geoff you are being a bit harsh. No wonder your DT was a pig to ride, I think your front end needs some setting up.
I reckon they are cool. Yamaha by then were able to design the DT as trail bike with no racing pretentions by then. There is no way a DT weighed anywhere near an XT, yet calling it the big fat pig it is amounts to blasphemy on most forums.
A nice tidy 250/400 monoshock would be welcome in my shed any day. Go for it, leave it stock and enjoy it as it was designed.
