By memory Myrtleford track was a 3 minute lap with my favorite part being the staircase on the back section.

Mick Croucher on his Husky. Micks dad Spot Croucher let the Myrtleford club use his property just out of Myrtleford at Merriang for the motor cross track. I remember Trevor Williams once stated in ADB that Myrtleford was the second best natural terrain track in Australia only just behind Toowoomba.

I have no idea how these guys ended up like this.

thanks for posting Rick, Merriang was one of my favourite tracks. I remember one muddy meeting where most of the 80's couldn't get up the hill and they ended up using a cutoff half way up.
cheers

I also have great memories of Myrtleford, when the vintage started racing there, If there was a track there, i would like to go back, very nice area.
-
I only raced there once and I recall it was a daunting place (for me) at the time. If my failing memory serves me correctly, at this particular meeting there was a jump down on the flat ground near the start finish line that sent the riders straight up, losing their speed then straight down and a few broke their rims/wheels on that day. Correct me if I'm wrong but I recall hearing that on the day.
I also recall at that meeting a jump that went across the hill up the top somewhere and when I jumped it the rear brake pedal on my RM125N got caught on the ground, pulled under the footpeg, locking the rear wheel and sending me off the track.
Yep was a daunting place for this C grader ;D
-
Thanks for your posts Rick, What a track it was! especially when muddy, I struggled up there on a 250, but great memories :) :)
-
I'd love to ride that track again where I had some of best results. I ended up getting 2nd for the day in the Juniors on my 80G against the 125's;

Don't remember the jump but I do recall some sharp edged bump on the flat ground near the start finish line that someone broke both wrists when they hit it.
Would have been sometime in the early 80's, but then it could be my failing memory.
Good shots too guys.

wow Jady, these are just great. Up until now I had no pics whatsoever of my old race days. I'm right behind Simon in the very first pic and then later on my 125G #46 on the line in the juniors. tell Simon thanks and keep them coming! :P

spot on Geoff, the guy that broke both wrists is a very occasional forum member and a mate of mine!

Hey guys. Excellent photos, thanks for the extra input. Some of Australia's best riders rode here at one time or another. As to the jump previously mentioned, Spot Croucher the owner of the land and track had heavy earth moving equipment. One day I went up for practice and Spot wanted to do a large tabletop on the bottom of the track. He asked me to help set up the gap and as he made it I would come from the start line, hit the ramp and and test the distance. As the gap got bigger it ended up being 4th gear on my yz490 at about 3/4 throttle. You had to back off after being flat out past the start Finnish line. On race day I hit the ramp and came up short kicking the back wheel over the top and cartwheeling. As I hit the deck the throttle jammed flat out and my leg was jammed in the back wheel and burnt through my nylons. I was the first one to crash on the jump I helped design that day. Couldn't ride again until the skin grew back on my leg.
