Title: XL350 valve retainers
Post by: ola_martin on September 16, 2012, 06:16:49 am
Just bought a XL350 motor in parts, never seen the inside on one of these before. One valvespringretainer is missing, the other 3, and all bottom plates is made of dark anodized aluminium, is this stock or aftermarket??
Thanks

Thanks, please also educate me a bit:

- Guess it might be different valvesprings also if it's aftermarket keepers, where can I get new ligthweight keepers?

- I see that it's possible to linebore the head and use needle bearings, (some supersmart engineexpert has glassblasted the head including bearing surfaces >:(  ) Guess it'll have a hard time keeping oilpressure...
Will I then need a special camshaft, or can the one I have be used in the bearings?

- How is the bearing closest to the sprocket mounted, two halves? Or is it not possible to replace?

- I think I have a aftermarket cam, if I post pictures and dimensiones of the lobes, can someone tell me if it's stock or not?

- I heard that it's possible to bore in a wiseco XR400 piston, will this fit whithout any further mods? Valvecuts, pin etc?
   (XR400 1996-04 86,00 o.d 10,1 compression)

Thanks! :)

Ok, thanks, planned to try anyway, I guess it's only the parts already damaged that will take a beating?

Does anybody know what it takes to get the XR400 piston in?

Sleeve, bore cases and more. Then if you are not really good it Will end in tears. 86mm is plenty.

Ola,don't use genuine honda XR400 piston, comps 1 atsmosphere too low, need wiseco hi comp piston for matching XL's piston deck height,(or higher?),on the subject of pistons, the piston in my old motor measures 86.45,has HA BEIND ST cast on the inside, has 'std' on top with the usual ex valve clearance indent, anyone know what it is?, :P

Thanks, probably better to go for a piston ready for the XL350 from xlint or something then. Was just that we deal Wiseco at work, so I could get a good price on the XR400 86mm piston...

Ola,go the wiseco XR400 86mm,it's 10-1 comp equates to std deck height comp ratio on XL350,unless you want more compression?,then Xlint's the go, :P

Hi Guys, thread hijack but i have come accross an XL bored to 420. Apparently the piston "slopped sideways in the bore" and that they all did this ??? sounds like a load of cr*p to me.

bike is for sale just wondering waht the general availability of early xl stuff is?

No the big bores don't all "slop sideways" in the bore.  Sounds like a lame excuse for ignorance!  MOST parts are available, though many not OEM from Honda.  Crank bearings have been discontinued, if you go to the local Honda dealer or the online parts distributors you will find a lot of "no longer available" parts in the listings.  Honda and others do this on many of the older bikes.  The crank bearings are problems because they were "custom" for Honda and the standard number on the bearings will NOT match up to the actual bearing specs.  Some rebuild replacement solutions have come up using different bearings and sleeves in order to match the fit.  Basically many aftermarket parts are being used to replace no longer available stock parts.  Probably about like building on a BSA.  How many stock factory parts are left for them?  Suppliers generally step up if there is enough market demand to make it a profit situation.  Buy valves here and springs there and pistons from someone else.

Building a big bore 420 from the old 350 motor will cost you plenty, that is for certain. I just built one so now my "cheap" pre78 racer isn't so cheap. Putting in a needle bearing cam is a must do I reckon. Have a look at most early XL heads and you will be hard pressed to find one that isn't flogged out on the cam end faces. It cost me around $700 to do my head. That's just for the machining which involved welding the the relief slot, (a common cause of head gasket failure), surface grinding, tunnel boring for the roller cam, refacing the rockers and bigger valve seats for the inlet.
Cam, Valve Springs, alloy retainers, slotted cam chain wheel, HD cam chain and big bore head gasket all came from XL-Int. I can highly recommend them as I had no problems with the service at all. Emails were replied to promptly and all questions answered. I had stainless valves made in QLD which again was no drama. I already had a big bore kit which I got with a heap of parts a few years back but expect to pay at least $450-$500 plus. You need to speed up the clutch gears as well to have any hope of the STD gearbox holding together. Clutch gears cost $400.
I was lucky enough to find a 1977 XL350 with only 1700 ks on it and clean oil in it so the big end and gearbox are all good to go.
I've made a 1 3/4 tail pipe but still need to get the header section made. No doubt another $150 bucks at least.
All up the motor build alone is around 3K.
Now I just hope that the build of the bike is worth it in that it handles well and does everything it should.
I will find out at HBBB!

i remember reading on this site that they were using vl /dore pistons out of the rb30 nissan motor for xl420 motor, they have valve relieves that should match up with the xl head as well

Next question please..... whats a 350 worth? i see they are not that common? this is a total basket case motor has been disassembled for years in the back of a van (sounds half ok? i thought so... untill i saw the "van" ...no doors, or windows on the van!!) yeah so real oxidised mess..$200 im not sure i can even start to think of the reality of that rebuild..... i'm a pull it to bits, clean it and bolt it back together with a spit shine rebuilder... might pass it over....

I just bought two 77mods 350XL engines for $150.00  ,don't know what they are like yet ,one is sitting in my 1976 HUSKY frame  while i think what to do with them.

Build yourself a Hybrid with the Husky frame and Honda motor.... Trust me, you will have fun. The Honda donk is a real ripper of a motor once it's been tweaked. Plenty of torque and an amazing top end.
My XL420 is a fantastic bike to ride. The surprising thing is that it required bugger all fettling once the build was done. It was great straight off of the work bench....apart from brakes! I did stiffen the suspension up a bit but that's all I've had to do apart from filter cleaning and oil changes!
Take it on buddy  ;D
