The results above are for the Victorian Grass Track Championships held on the 02-03-1980.The day of the title I rode a Hagon Frame with a TA125 Twin Yamaha Roadrace motor in it. It was that dusty that on the last lap I passed Ken Speechley on the outside of turn 2 and as we went through the corner there was a rider laying on the track that we did not even see. Talking with Ken after the race I said that I was using the tree line down the backstraight to tell me when to turn onto the short straight at turn 3. He laughed and said he was doing the same thing. This is why we did not see the fallen rider until we passed him. I came in after practice on my 2 Valve Jawa Speedway Bike and Dad said that I was really flying down the back straight into turn 3. I said to him, that would be because of my arm cramps and I couldn`t shut off.

Great story and photos. 8)
-
on the last lap I passed Ken Speechley
Where's Ken Speechley these days? He rode a bit of vintage motocross on Maicos back in the early to mid 90's. I haven't seen his name anywhere for years.
-
Brian Clarke on a CR, wont see that every day !! :) great photos of yesteryear.
-
Ken Speechley would have to be one of the nicest Guys I have ever met racing.
One day at Romsey he got pushed wide on turn one at probably 90-100 Mph by Rob Stafford coming under him on a slider. As he lost it and the bike cartwheeled we all thought it was him flying half way up the trees. This body then jumped up out of the long grass and started waving to us as the bike thudded back down to the ground.
-
Great shot of the 125's waiting to go out for practice?
#27 Ray Owen #153 Gary Chasemore #2 Gary Flood all on Bullies
#786 Les Lewis Jnr on Charlie Edwards' Yammy twin? # 68 Rick Wason ;D
Some other familiar riders and numbers but I can't recall
regards Mark
-
Hey Mark
#40 Milton Riley, #41 Peter Worland & #314 Mick Hepburn are also from Wangaratta.
Do you think that #110 is Jamie Walker? Also is #400 Edgcombe?
-
I tell you, I am not getting any work done. I just checked the program & #400 is Gary Owen - Bendigo and I think that #7 is Brad Lewis - Hartwell Club
-
I tell you, I am not getting any work done.
Lol Rick ... this forum can do that to you particularly when you are re-discovering your love for all things vmx ;D
But keep up the good work, we all appreciate your posts ;)

Anybody know who the bloke with the harley club of victoria shirt on is.
-
Not sure , but I will get Ken Walker to check him out. I think he was originally a sidecar rider.

John Heaviside.
He is still involved with speedway. Owns an 880 JAP among other things. It is MAGNIFICENT
-
Thanks Slider29 John Heaviside is a life member of the Harley Club as i am aswell will pm you about photo;s
-
I started to copy the program today at work and ran out of time. So much work, so little time to have fun. I will add the entire program soon. All the placings were hand written in by my mum.
Also does anyone remember the day Gary Chasemore arrived with the twin Rotax in the hagon. I have never seen anything like it wind up down the back straight at Romsey. Also the TZ350 ? ridden by Johnnie Dewhurst. And the same bike I think ridden by Boocock at Bendigo International Speedway. I am afraid that my age group have seen the best of racing come and go already and the young fella`s will never again get to see the likes of Romsey and the speeds that were obtained.
-
An awesome pic from Romsey .

And Ray Owen in 3rd place. Great pic.
-
I might add,.....
What a place,...What a time,...
Romsey was the Holy Grail.

In 1979 was running 4th in a heat to make the main final. Closed in on 3rd coming down the straight and went to pass just after the first corner by just going a tad wider and keeping it cranked on. Was just off the dirt , in the grass when bang hit a little hole that was covered by the grass, derailed the chain which made a lovely mess of the swing arm and sprocket. The Godden I had/ have runs only a bees dick of clearance. Shit it was a long push back to the pits. Great track many memories of Dewhurst, Flood, HalfPint and Chasemore. Old man Chasemore used to turn up with a car trailer full of bikes for Gary. I reckon he could of funded Bert floods retirement with all the work he got done there. Pissed I didn't make a final there as the big boys really flew as did the trike bikes. Rooneys kwaka, just plain scary speed.
-
i regret i never saw those events, surely someone must have super 8 footage?
-
What fantastic memories watching that day! Take note of the track record times, all around two minutes. Remember this was basically a very long very rough circular dirt/grass track around the perimeter of the local Romsey golf course(*). The speeds were lets say staggering..... :) :o
* Yes a golf course! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Hoony can you imagine the what the Vincent/HRD ,JAP 880s and all the other outfits were like on that giant track!!!!!!!!
-
Looks like the wind had gotten under the peak of Crumpy's helmet, no bikini fairing to get behind.
Gary Flood was also riding at Crewe in England with Phil around that time, great photo's.
-
Unreal photo of proper Grasstrack !!,
It looks like Crumpie's on a Skids bike, you can see the push-bar over the rear guard, but then I think Jawa Longtrackers had them as well.

Some sneaky tactics were in place at Romsey on race day. Bikes would be coming into the pits covered up .Small groups of riders/spectators would gather around for the
"unveiling" of the new weapon! Over the years I've seen some rippers.
Hagon 350cc yamaha twin/aircooled roadrace engine.
Hagon TZ350 yammy twin/watercooled roadrace engine
Hagon RG 500 suzuki twin/watercooled roadrace engine
The latest 4 valve Jawa longtrack bike ridden by Gary Chasemore
These bikes were scary fast!! The tz 350 ridden by Phil Crump was throwing a rooster tail 10/20 ft into the air. Fantastic stuff.

Hey guys, check out YouTube, someone has put up Romsey Grasstrack sidecars film and I think it shows the big crash with John Heavyside in it. I was sitting on the corner post in the pits that day as dad was racing his bultaco Hagon.

What an awesome bit of footage, thanks for pointing that one out. I went to school and had a fair bit to do with John Heaviside's daughters in my teens. I actually ended up working at his foundry on school holidays for a while, lovely bloke if ya on his better side! :D I remember he used to keep all his old bikes mothballed behind the offices of the foundry, god there's a few lovely bit of machinery there!! I haven't ever seen him ride anything other than a zzr1100 but the trophys and sash's ive seen around the place tell me he was no slouch!! Maybe I'll get into the daughters ears and see if they can pep him up to swing a leg over something at hbbb next year!! ;D
-
Fantastic footage. Also Dave Barry from Wangaratta told me that in google their is an ariel photo of the track at Romsey. This was where I accidentally found the video. John Heavyside was a good friend of my father, Ray Wason.
-
Fantastic, 8) 8) what a blast from the past, I was in the mob of spectators on the left of screen that day, great close up veiwing till the sidecars started going arseover straight at us :o I hope some more footage emerges.

-
Thats unreal. I was there that day and that was a real bad stack. Bits of bike flew all over the place as did the riders/passengers. There is footage of solos as well.
-
WOW Romsey
Cross over flat track and motocross that bloody rough with the big holes and tree roots at the top corner by the end of the day
Only went 67/68 some things you never forget the SPEED only for the brave or Wild men of the time
Most guys on here remember just how FAST these old bikes were

An Astro and a Longtracker at full tilt on a huge track Mmmmm how I would love to see that once more!!!!
-
That would be Chris Kelly on the astro...
-
And Les Lewis jnr on the slider
-
Jeez Chris Kelly could ride. He once passed me half way down the straight at Nepean fully tipped in sideways for the speedway bend on his 360 Astro. He was faster sideways than I was at full speed flat out on my methanol 440 Maico! Considering that he was lapping me and I came in third gives you an idea of how much he dominated.
-
HI All,
Does anyone have any more footage or photo's?
Jon Heaviside is my dad.
The man in the yellow Harley Club Shirt is Graeme Donaldson
-
Hi Tam, welcome aboard. I was talking to your old man at Broadford last Easter.
You have to be patient around here. The pics are out there but they come in dribs and drabs. Sometimes we get a bit of a run going. There are 100's of pics on the Dirt Track Images site. Get John to have a look there. He will recognise heaps of people on the pics. Mostly '60's and '70's. Thanks must go to Sliderulz for that site,...around 80 pages and still going strong.
I actually have a dvd with your old man racing at Temora NSW with Weazle as his passenger circa 1966/67. I think he gets 3rd place behind Harry Rowe and Dave Howard (winners) NSW titles I think. I can get copies done but they don't play on my DVD player but they might on others.
regards Mark
ps It sure looks your dad from behind in the pits ;)
-
Welcome Tam, Has your Dad found a JAP sidecar to restore/ride yet? I have been working weekends for some time now and miss the meetings for such info. Cheers Tim754

Charlie Edwards bike, Gary Flood or Phil Crump onboard maybe ??
-
Over here in WA Ken George Yamaha had a Kerr frame built fitted with a TR3 Yamaha twin for Colin Thompson to ride at Claremont speedway around early 70s
Not allowed to use against the true solo bike. Rode it in the stock bike class 4 stroke and two stroke lot of Kerr frame specials
Only seen him ride it a few times bloody fast in a straight line with a 20ft roost out the back unridable in the corners just wild wheelspin
Wonder where that bike is now
Cheers

i have seen what can be done on charlie edwards bike at a bendigo short track meeting.nigel boocock riding it was fast he used the boards as traction

I was there that night, only a kid, can`t remember how old I was. That thing was a beast and very quick down the back straight. I also have a picture somewhere of Dean Taylor at bendigo on the TZ700 sidecar I think. The first sidecar to hit 100Mph down the back straight. When I raced my sidecar there #76 FZR1045cc a Police Officer was on the infield during practice and came into the pits and showed me the radar gun with 175 kph on it. I was chasing Andrew Cleave at the time. I always think back to Dean Taylor and think that I was only 15 kph faster some 20 years later.
-
That thing of Charlie's, with Booey on board , went past TD and I on our JAPs at Bendigo, like we were standing still, I will never forget the banshee wail of it as it went by.
I'm pretty sure that's Gary Flood on Charlie's bike in the pic
Foss
-
Yep Foss, It's Gary Flood on Charlie's bike
-
Who's on Charlies bike chasing the Astro, stature looks like Ray Owen but I doubt it.
-
And Les Lewis jnr on the slider
There's your answer, Slides
Foss
-
I'm having second thoughts on that Foss. Looks like GF
-
Looks like he was a Speedway rider, the roll on the peak for perpex and the breast plate looks like the red of the Aussie one that had the white Kangaroo from around that time.
-
Gary had just returned from the UK he had one season riding speedway there.
-
The caption of the pic, one page back, of Gary Flood on Charlie's bike ,says the Clarrie Jones would be riding it at Romsey, I wonder if thats the year he did ??

Dad at the Harley Club drags, Calder Park. He road this Hagon at Romsey and so did I.
This is the bike that Freakshow sent home.
This was taken at the Avalon short circuit meeting under lights. Dad is leaning on the same Hagon and I raced it that night.
