EBay narrows payment options
Wednesday Apr 9 23:18 AEST
New security changes to auction website eBay Australia will affect the way buyers purchase goods, and funnel more funds into its coffers.
Under the changes, direct deposits, money orders and personal cheques will no longer be listed as a payment option after June 17.
As a result, buyers will have only two options with which to pay: either cash-on-delivery, or via the online commerce website PayPal, which is owned by eBay.
PayPal accepts direct deposit or credit card payment on behalf of eBay sellers at a fee of between 1.1 and 2.4 per cent.
Source http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=67909
Like many of us I have an ebay account however, I prefer to pay for my purchases via direct deposit. I do have a Paypal account linked to my bank account for nessessity when DD is not an option. In linking to a bank account and not a credit card transactions take up to 6 days to clear.
ebay state they are implimenting this change to save problems. Like many others I believe that is not the sole reason nor the prime reason if ebay stand to profit by having the majority of transactions funnelled through thier paypal company.
This attempted monopoly i feel will drive many account holders away on search of other auction sites . if you feel like telling ebay how you feel about the proposals give them some feedback at
http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/policies/unsolicited-ideas.html
-
They'll push the limits until an alternative becomes viable - the nature of crass, greedy, filthy capitalism ::).
The answer is get shares in Evilbay ;). If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em. ;D
-
I prefer to use paypal and get the shits with sellers if they dont offer it as its a pain in the arse to log into my BAnk and then set up the DD and hope i tyrpe in all the details. YOU can alway pay COD if you needed to.
What it may do is MAKE overseas sellers USE it , to many refuse and want Money orders and crap.
I think its a good thing , but id like to see them be more accountable for Rip offs and scams when you have payed with pay pal on there site, this move i think legallly they will be more respoinsible, which would also make em pick up there game in that area.
-
As a seller the idea STINKS. I dont what to pay fees TWICE on everthing I sell. I dont want my bank account linked with paypal which is the only way you can get money out ( or spend it on ebay ). Ebay can jam up their fuggen arse. All those other small auction sites just doubled in volume.
Fuggen tell me I MUST OFFER PAYPAL. Fu&% you ebay. Greedy bunch of female sex organs.
-
Tell me about it :-[ I got stung $26 to transfer to a bank account. When their website says free for more than $150, hows that work???I'm with you there Quickie, exactly what are all the lesser known sites?
-
I just read the email from Ebay... It has exclusions to the above check them out,One is cars ,bikes, boats as I read it.
-
Some exclusion yes. But hey I sell stuff on ebay so I have cash for my bikes. Items not cover by their exclusions.
If your a buyer only it might be good and play into your hands, but for sellers NO WAY it sucks. If a seller sells item for $20 after you pay listing fees, Finial value fees and now paypal payment exception fees then paypal fees to transferr the money to your account you'd be lucky to get $2 out of it.
Fuggen sucks.
These new rules will drive sellers away. Buyer will suffer cos their will be fu&* all listed to buy.
-
I'm predicting even mnoe stuff will be pulled before the end of the auction and sold off ebay by whatever means the buyer and seller agree to. It will be a great place to advertise but the final sale will be off ebay. Watch ebay start to lose a lot on final value fees and paypal fees as the number of auctions ending early increases!! ::)
-
meh....... im not sure but you just add 1.5% to your reserve $$$'s on the item when you list it, not hard is it ? if i want $10 for it i list it at 11.50 its not a rocket science.
I leave my seller paypal in there ;like its own little bank account, and use it to pay for other shit in the same currency, saves a lot of rooting about, as for being charged, i have pulled money out a few times and i was never charged. i think you either pulled the money out in the wrong currency or somehow got under the threashold, if it was wrong you should have contacted them to sort it out.
This is a great oppertunity , for you guys like nathan who buy offline, but for all you other guys who spew cause an Ahole in the US will only except money orders.
-
Paypal is no bloody help if a bike comes up local and money caught up in paypal account for fuggen week. The best buys are the ones that come up in your own backyard offered to as On The Spot cash deals.
-
Tell me about it :-[ I got stung $26 to transfer to a bank account. When their website says free for more than $150, hows that work???I'm with you there Quickie, exactly what are all the lesser known sites?
Lozza.
This ones okay and I think will grow. http://auction.netbikes.com.au/ Ebay couldnt sell my GPZ750 but this site did in only few days and for higher price too. Ohhhh. and I got paid they way I wanted, via BANK DEPOSIT with no fees and had the money within an hour..
-
Fair point Quicky, but the netbikes site is going to need much more exposure to others to be of any benefit, personally I find Paypal preferential when buying stuff from overseas, always get a bit of a nervous twitch when mailing off $US in cash. But just bump your reserve up by a tad and cover it . Who knows what the comparo is with listing it in Trading Posts etc ? Once again, good and bad to be seen from a change, but it will streamline things to a degree.
-
apparently Ebay have a live setup this week in New Orleans - biggest item on the agenda is the "world wide" revolt over the Pay Pal only issue - be interesting to see the outcome?
Rossco
-
The Australian Consumer Commission or what the toothless bureaucratic crap is called have also been investigating Paypals great idea..... of course they tell us Banks, Oil Companys ,petrol stations, and basically all large Companys are all above board and fair................ >:(
-
Remember when Banks first offered us ATM cards .... no fees - no charges - . The same thing is happening with Ebay . They have the market place covered ...now it's time to srew us .
-
Hopefully the backlash will cause them to re-think that paypal only bullshit.
-
So what is this crap? Am i to believe you can pay with PayPal then after you get the item, somehow reach into sellers acc get your money back. No wonder buyers like it. Best of both worlds. Free items.. Wheres the protection for sellers.
Below...Received from Paypal with a payment notice.
Please be aware that your payment can still be reversed, (e.g. if it is subject to a chargeback), even after you have posted the item to your buyer. Complying with PayPal's protection programs and following the trading guidelines, in our Security Centre helps to protect you from things like chargebacks.
-
crikey - they're ruining the formula!!
-
Their ya go buyers. Buy all you want, dont pay for it, stiff any many sellers as you please. Pick out a seller and distroy their rep just cos you dont like them.
Ebay has removed the right for sellers leave Negative or Neutral feedback.
Ebay has now lost the plot. Buyers do as you will. Sellers bend over and take it up the arse.. Oh and get charged listing frees, Final valve fees and Paypal fees for your trouble. Sit back and enjoy coping 3 charges to sell 1 item.

http://www.itwire.com/content/view/18186/1023/
The public outcry over eBay Australia's intentions to introduce mandatory use of its PayPal online payment system has forced the US office of eBay onto the back foot. eBay, through a spokesperson on the company's official blog has stated publicly that the world's dominant online auction site will not try to introduce PayPal-only transactions on the site in the US.
It appears that what's not good enough for US consumers is quite alright for Australian consumers, according to Lieberman's statements.
Thatd be right. Bloody america gets the option and OZ gets the stick
-
You will read this alot more ....I have this advertised elsewhere and have the right to withdraw this item :)
-
dont mind the cant leave shit feedback on me, about time you can shaft a shit seller. Also noticed it has a drop down for over charging postage ...interesting
-
Shit sellers deserve it Freaky but that not the point im making. ANYONE can select a seller, someone they dont like for other reasons not involving ebay buy 20 of their items and neg them on the lot just because they can.
Store sellers will be able to tarnish their competitors using multi ID's set up to do just that. Private competitors will really cut loose on each other now using negs to discredit their rivals. Look at it this way Freaky. Someone you may have pissed here on the forum could now stuff your feedback on ebay as payback and there is nothing you can do about. I hate to think anyone here would do that but its a possibility, an example what im talking about. The list of abuse is endless.
I have been on ebay a long time, in fact I was registered on ebay com before ebay au even started. I was one of ebays first 500 registered users and got a nice certificate and an official embroidered first 500 hat for the trouble. I have seen many changes with ebay over the years most being for the better. These latest changes are plain stupid and totally unfair on sellers. Some people who only buy on ebay may think its great. That wont last. Sellers with pass on the new fees involved with Paypal by starting items at higher prices. Buy it nows will go up in price and be used less by sellers. This feedback change just another insult.
-
I really don,t understand why everyone whinges and whines about paypal. Try working out in the bloody desert like I do and I,m sure you will be thankfull that it even exists! The other benefits are that I don,t have to beg my missus to go to the bloody bank while she,s giving me an ear bashing about "more money that I,m wasting on crap". Hail Paypal.
-
Paypal itself isn't the problem, it's being forced to use it that has everyone up in arms.
As for the charge back option, well welcome to the business side of the fence, as this is what every business has to deal with when accepting "over the phone" or internet credit card payments (outside of ebay)

Exactly GMC. The fact that our free choice has been removed completely and having to added burden of another 3.5% fee as well.
PayPal is as ricky for sellers on line as it is for a site holder to take a cheque at a swap meet.

Just got this notice from EvilPay....
"By now you've probably heard about the changes to eBay.com.au . We appreciate there will be a period of adjustment for sellers. However, with fewer buyer disputes and greater protection for buyers and sellers we're sure you'll see the benefits of using PayPal.
By 21 May all your listings will need to include PayPal as a payment option. Here's a quick to-do list if you need to update your listings: "
Still reading throught the rest.
"We've recently made some changes to Feedback. You can now receive multiple Feedback credits from the same buyer, which will mean a higher Feedback score for many sellers.
Also, you can no longer leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. Instead, we encourage you to report dodgy buyers to us, so we can take action. To find out more please read our Feedback FAQs or join us for an online workshop on 28 May 2008 from 6.30-8.00pm."
And the resistance breaking sweeter is.....
"Here's a chance to make a buck and try your luck in our May sweepstakes (ending 20 May).
All you have to do is list and sell with PayPal and you'll be automatically entered into one of two prize pools worth a total of $199,000. Prizes include an overseas holiday, a Holden Barina, 10 46-inch LCD TVs, 40 Nokia phones and more. (conditions apply)"
-
Take a look at this site, its free to list for 60 days and then only cost you 2 cents to list for another 60 days, it is a little slow there at the moment for bike stuff, but it seems to be slowly picking up www.OZtion.com.au worth a look anyway.

Just looked through it. Not a patch on evilpay at the moment. But I'll keep an eye on it. Things might change. It seems Ebay is driving buyers and seller away so these alternatives have got their best chance.

Its a bit like " hes a wanker cos he wants $10,000 for this or that " or moaning about the price of fuel ::)
Its simple really
If you think somthing cost to much dont buy it
If fuels to expensive Drill in your back yard, go deep enough you will find oil (maybe from the other side but you will find oil ) build a refinery and refine your own Gas :)
if Ebay sucks dont use it set up your own online auction site, a 15 yr old Kiwi kid did and then sold it for millions :)
I will be happy to buy gas if somone out there can sell it cheaper :)
And id be happy to use an alternative to Ebay if somone sets one up ;)
-

Yes he did Bill. Now trade me is owned by ebay I believe ;)
Im sure im not the only one who remembers our two and fast growing very good Aussie auction sites that were online here way before ebay au. came to OZ.. They were Stuff.com.au and sold.com.au. Both were bought out by ebay USA and shut down.
So who wants to start another site? I'll go in with you.
-
About the only ones Oztion has might suit buyers here are these. All seem fair priced. Might be worth a look. Little YZ looks ok.

Anyone else get one of these? Seems the backlash has forced them them to re-think or at very least find why people are so pissed off. At least I got my chance to tell them what I think out their Paypal only payment option.

Ya gotta love this decription. ;D ;D Dont know how the auction will last but I love the Paypal bit.
1968 Honda CL90, full sized, motorcycle.
Unused & stored for 30 years
Absolutely factory original condition.
12,000 miles from new.
90cc 4 stroke engine
Four speed manual transmission with clutch.
Kick start only.
Will require light restoration.
Very sporty, cafe racer styling.
$100 fee payable if you are stupid enough to pay me by PayPal.
-
I don't think I'm on there Xmas card list anymore ;D
-
Hmmm... Went to pay for some pistons via PayPal tonight.
The news said the Aussie dollar was worth US$0.955.
The NAB website says its worth US$0.94.
ANZ says that an electronic dollar is worth US$0.963
And yet, Paypal reckons its worth US$0.931.
Shenanigans?
I can't help but think that PayPal can "skim" this way... It'd be dead easy for PayPal to claim that they were simply converting the funds, while actually taking a cut simply by under-stating the currency conversion.
-
Seller beware...
Search through the new bullshit rules you'll find this.
To further reduce the number of buyer disputes, PayPal may delay the release of funds for up to 21 days or until the buyer leaves positive feedback.
Gees im gunna have fun buying. I wont have to pay for anything... ::) ::) ::)
-
Heard on the news today the ACCC has put a stop to ebay taking Paypal only.
-
Oh I hope so. Will be watching the news tonight. ;D
-
Found this statement from on ebay site.[/i]
The statement reads as follows:
ACCC draft notice undermines online consumer protection
eBay will continue to fight for safety benefits for consumers
13 June 2008: eBay challenges yesterday’s Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) draft notice and is disappointed that the ACCC’s current view delays the opportunity to provide consumers a more secure way to shop on eBay.com.au with confidence.
eBay intends to work with the ACCC and hopes to achieve a final outcome which has the safety and security of eBay’s members as its paramount objective. eBay will delay the removal of other payment methods from the site until Tuesday 15 July.
PayPal offers consumers a range of payment choices, including bank transfer and credit cards. It’s a safer and easier online payment system that significantly enhances protection for eBay buyers and sellers.
eBay is pleased to confirm that PayPal buyer protection will jump to $20,000 on eBay.com.au for purchases paid for using PayPal from Tuesday 17 June.
eBay believes the consumer benefits of this initiative are worth fighting for on behalf of its buyers which will ultimately benefit sellers.
What does this mean for you?
PayPal Buyer Protection will still increase to $20,000 on 17 June 2008.
From 15 July 2008, the only payment methods sellers may offer on eBay.com.au will be PayPal and pay on pick up.
Selling on eBay.com.au
Current policies regarding accepted payment methods do still apply. This means PayPal is required on all listings on eBay.com.au. Other payment methods (i.e. bank deposit, cheque/money order) may also be offered until 15 July 2008.
As previously communicated any listings that do not comply with eBay’s Accepted Payments Policy will be removed.
There are a small number of categories excluded from these changes. Learn more about these exclusions.
Buying on eBay.com.au
To ensure you benefit from PayPal’s Buyer Protection Policy, eBay strongly recommends you use PayPal when paying for your purchases on eBay.com.au.
From 15 July 2008 the available payment methods will be limited to PayPal, Visa/MasterCard, or pay on pick up.
Please note that some of our onsite communications will still refer to changes taking place on 17 June 2008.
These communications are being updated and should reflect the new date of 15 July 2008 within the coming days.
Regards
The eBay team

Don't you just love the speed at which the spin doctors get in there and try and make it look as if the ACCC has taken away some of out personal freedoms by over ruling their attempt at manipulating more money into their already overflowing coffers. Even though I prefer Pay Pal when I'm buying, I like to have the right to offer the option of direct deposit or money order if I'm selling. This is a victory for the consumer.

I think Oztion will be a flash in the pan unfortunately, they will see a huge increase the immediate future but it will die off just like a local fish n chip shop taking on McDonalds.
But at least they are giving Ebay a good scare.... Ebay must be hurting at the moment they have really dropped the ball with all the rule changes, just look at the pages of red when you look thru the completed items!!
I have used Ebay for 5 years and it was great, never had any real dramas but in the last month with the new feedback rules I've have had 3 NPB's (unfortunately one is a well known racer in VMX which is a bit disappointing...) and other buyers that don't care when they pick bikes up or don't show up... its as bad as dealing with the trading post dickheads

At last..
Changes to eBay.com.au scheduled for 15 July are being postponed until the review process with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) regarding its recent draft notice is complete. As previously announced, eBay.com.au is continuing to work with the ACCC to achieve an outcome that benefits buyers and sellers.
Changes that came into effect on 21 May 2008, requiring all sellers to offer PayPal, will remain. These changes mean that all buyers have the option of choosing PayPal, the safer payment method for shopping on eBay.com.au. Payment methods that are currently permitted will continue to be allowed on eBay.com.au until further notice.
Other recently introduced safety measures, such as PayPal Seller Protection and increased PayPal Buyer Protection (now up to $20,000) will also remain.
eBay regrets any ongoing uncertainty that this further delay may cause and will advise you of any future plans for implementation following the ACCC process.
As always, eBay appreciates the feedback received from the Community and will use this input to consider where we can make improvements that benefit both buyers and sellers.
eBay remains committed to improving safety and we will continue to look for ways to improve the shopping experience for buyers which will subsequently benefit both sellers and eBay.
Please note that some of our onsite communications may still refer to changes taking place on 15 July 2008. These communications are in the process of being updated.
Regards
The eBay Team
