First new fangled water cooled single shock disc brake bike to emerge from the cave. Can't wait to fire it up and race in pre 90. Now to learn the ancient art of starting a Husky 4 stroke ::) ::)

Very nice looking jigger
-
Nice looking bike and IMO the first real four stroke MX engine these things were fast and reved like nothing before. There major problems at the time were ignitions and the brakes were shit I can remember my 87 Husky cracking the disk during the 88 four day.
-
Great job on a cool bike
-
Nice one PEZ.
-
Great job mate,very nice.

Thanks for the comments. I fitted the double pot Brembo off the 88 rather than the one pot used on the 87 so hopefully the brakes will work. Both disc and caliper float with this arrangement so hopefully it won't crack Mick. I am eyeing up the vinduro in the Masters Games in Nov on the Goldy so won't be as hard on it as a 4 Day would be.....also probably not ridden quite as hard either ;D ;D
-
Try it out at the vinduro at Murphys Creek at the end of September.
-
Probably shouldn't mention it PEZ but I had an 86 EXC KTM and that headlight reminds me of it. ;D
-
Yes indeed Mike the Acerbis Elba headlight was used by Husky Products as well as others including KTM. I sourced the decal from Andre Hovart and it had the KTM logo on it which of course was immediately banished thanks to Photoshop! The bike actually came with WP 4054 front end off a KTM which was removed to keep the Nordic gene pool pure also! A correct Husky 4054 front end is waiting in my garage to fit at some stage when I find the time to rebuild it. Cheers

Pez..my recollection of the starting ritual is as follows.. pull in the decomp/valve lifter...4 or 5 slow kicks thur.... then kick like all buggery... oh...yeah..... put your right hand on the seat...don't go anywhere near the throttle...worked like a charm... even if some knobhead had come along before and given the throttle a twist and squirted gas down its throat...
-
Nice job Pez.
The 87 LC is the nicest LC model for me.
The silencers look weird.
They are shorts ( MX) but also not large.
can you post a pic from the rear.
Thanks

Hi Crabman
The plastics were on the bike when I got it and I just had to restore them. Sorry I don't have a source for new ones. I would just keep an eye on eBay and you could also try Rick Horvat. Make sure you show photos of your bike when it's ready. Good luck

Just STUNNING. I have never ridden this model but i did get to spend some race time on the first model twin shock white tank, for that matter i got to ride Bryan Pattersons race bike before Hans de'tuned it too, spent an arvo running it in, killed my cr43o in a straight line. I much preferred the white tank enduro version in mx, probably did around a dozen races with it and it wasnt bad, steered nicely for a Husky, went like stink in a straight line and had great rear suspension. Trouble was Husqvarna sent an "update" package for it which included a smaller carb and different ignition, it was never the same, tamed it right down and became a BITCH to start when hot, especially if it flamed out, sometimes you couldnt start the fu..er for an hour! "My" carb and ign. ended up on Han's personal bike,he used to win the drags then!
Hmm....i'm starting to get "the love" back for old Huskies....swore that would never happen again! Oh dear...
cheers,
Kt

Really nice job Pez.....I just love those 80's Huskies, especially the 4 strokes. I well remember a mate owning a similar bike and the dramas he went through trying to start the bugger until Hans showed him the drill. It was rarely a problem after that lesson. Watto got it in one....do not touch the throttle. 8)

Finally got it running today ;D ;D after fixing major leak from water pump due to rotted magnesium seal housing and leaking plastic hose connector to the barrel. Ended up replacing the mag clutch housing with an alloy one. She don't leak anymore :D
After all the stories of being b*stard's to start it wasn't too bad after all. Hand off the throttle and using the kickstart operated decomp device it starts reasonably easily. Once moved past the majority of the comp stroke it kicks over quite nicely. Cold it wouldn't start for me with the choke on. Had to turn it off after a shitload of kicking before it would start. Hot it only needs the choke to prime it for a few kicks and then turn choke off and it will start.
Motor seems to get damn hot though. Even being water cooled. Hoses perilously close to the pipes also. Have wrapped pipe in fiberglass tape to protect.
Faak the engine breaking is wicked. Quite different to my 2 stroke autos! Going to be interesting swapping between them on a race day :o :o Will these four strokes catch on with the racing public I wonder ::)

Show us a pikky of the busted tank PEZ.
Worried
-
Sweet bike, you wonder why they never did an auto version. My 88 WR250 had issues with water pump corrosion and starting, finally I fixed both by buying a KTM350. ;D

Not good Pez.
Mates 84/240 air cooled has done that in behind the badge.
This guy maybe ? ----->

It's expensive but new and not faded!

Thanks for the leads Mike and XC. The HVA factory tank is for a 2 stroke so it won't fit. It's lovely and new through :D
I have found a scungey one which is winging my way from the US but just stumbled across a near NOS one in Sweden....as you do when you have just shelled out for something else. Just waiting to see what shipping and robbery by thieving Swedish export taxes will do to the price (quoted in Swedish moonbeams) ;D ;D ;D Lucky no racing to late Feb so the wait is bearable ::)
-
Just found this tank - looks pretty clean

Thanks XC. That is for a different model - not sure which year.
Got the NOS one from Sweden at a bargain basement $280 including postage. I was told later the post office in Sweden made a mistake and charged 500 kroner instead of 1500 for postage. Sometimes luck goes your way ;D Now waiting for the rain to stop here in Queensland before I can take it racing >:(
