It finally turned up today turned the fuel on and it fired first kick then splutterd and died (ran out of fuel) put new fuel in and 50 kicks later(kicks back like a mule) when I was about to burst into flames (memorys of my it250 days)it started adjusted the idle so it wouldnt stall went for a run down the street all gears work could do with the tank and carb cleaned out but all good so far.

Nice one welcome to the DT360 club.
-
Mavman you have done it now its only the first , old DT/RT's are a compulsive habit next thing you know you will have as many as firko and I . joking aside if you need advice or where to get stuff , just post your questions there are quite a few of us DT/RT tragic's on here. welcome to the fold . ;D Iain
-
just noticed it still even has the tool box , don't tell me its still got the tools as well . Iain
-
Ian sadly no tools i held my breath while opening the tool box but no joy. Now that ive bought this one there are 3 others not far from home that have come to light all the same owner from new hopefully they will be making the trek to my place soon. I had the bug sort of already my dad had a lightish metalic green dt1 250 when i was a kid and it vulcanised my gumboot to my leg on the header pipe while he was taking me on the tank for a ride never forgot that one.
-
On the tank the decal says always engage decompressor when starting can someone tell me the starting procedure my leg has copped a few kickbacks with no problems so far but it only a matter of time. thanks mav
-
I've got one of these stripped down in scramble trim and a near new bassani power pipe, it's near on my favourite bike to ride. I love it, only when it doesnt bite me though!! Starting procedure :D :D get ya self a lead gumboot and kick like a bastard!! ;)
-
Rookie1 thats whats been happening, lead gumboot on back order.
-
Are they an auto-decompressor like the later 400's? (decompressor activates during kickstart arc)
I know my IT400C kicks over like a 125 - even after a full rebuild....
have you checked that the decompressor's working?
-
Just got it home today not sure how the decomp works has lever on the hbars tried it both way does not seem to matter how you use it either starts or chucks my leg over my head.
-
pull that black plastic cover off (on the front of the barrel), the decompression valve is behind there.
check that it's actually opening when you move the lever. There is some adjustment available. ;D
-
although I do recall that Dad has some nasty scars from starting his RT2/3.... ::)
-
I will go and have a look, my father said the same sort of thing as yours.
-
i have a GYT barrell on my 360( no decomp) and its a bastard to start, the issue is it needs good spark to kick over in such a short kick stroke. so check you also have plenty of blue flame. As IT400 says, check if the decomp is actually working too, if the lever in the barrel is moving the pin in and out or not. might need to be pulled out and lubed up.
-
Also before you kick turn the bars to the left so your knee cap can't hit the bar , Im not joking it can happen Ive got the scars to prove it .
-
Pulled the rubber cover back, full of water no rusty bits found though lucky you metioned it, seems to be operating the decomp fine do you hold your finger on it while kicking or push it once before kicking ?.Have a heavy leg Ian not got kicked that far forward yet but have takin your advice on board as i can see it easily happening. Cheers Mav.
-
Thats an awesome score Mav 8) i to have a soft spot for those models :) i raced a stripped down 125 when i was a kid ;D

that'd have to be one of the coolest old photo's i've ever seen Bill
i'd love to have one like that of me in my younger years.
so back to the RT2 kicking back story,
it was only a matter of time before someone was to say it so i may as well be the first,
CDI, CDI, CDI...
find one that fits and fit it!
these things are the kickback king with only the origional piston port RT1 being worse,
if thats possible.
a lot of people mount thier kick lever way forward so it clears the leg as they do have a rather unusual bend to them, but having had mine kick back one time when i had my kick lever in the forward position, well, lets just say never again as it'll throw the leg into the handlebars even more so.
my kick lever is mounted more rearward, it makes starting a bit more finicky but i reckon my legs worth it.
complete stator CDI from the DT400 or some IT models should bolt straight on.
mine runs a YZ490 set~up that needed a bit of work in the lathe to make it fit snuggly.
i'm sure other will also vouch for the validity of the cdi on these beasts
-
Heard allot about the cdi fixing kick back will have to source one, has anyone used one of these new units before, when you put the dt400 stator coils and trigger in do you have to run the dt400 flywheel as well or can you use the original one.

I removed the kick starter on my RT1 before I did my old bones damage!. If I can't find some-one to push it bad luck!
A stronger spark is necessary to minimise kick-back.
The decompressor on the early RT1 has got a fairly small bypass port which can get carboned up so even if the valve moves it won't let any pressure out. I assume the later ones are the same.
Fun machine.
cheers pancho.

Nice pick up there mavman. I had that 360 on my ebay watch list. I bought one a few years ago but haven't started the resto yet. Mine still had the tools. I had about 3 RT's over the years from when I first got my license back in 76.
And I concur with everyone they are a bitch to kick start and like others my knee wacked into the bars many times.
Here's mine

I picked up this little gem DT125 a few months ago for $200 it's all there and goes like a charm

Guys if you fit a later model YZ kick lever it makes life a lot easier even on a RT1 non reed up to 390 . Also Les Richters sells a nice cable operated decompressor that fits into the spare spark plug hole. Im running a Yz d 250 cdi . Mavman yes you need the whole dt 400 cdi system it makes a 360 a joy to start .

Will that kicker fit using an up pipe?
-
Try using one off a R5 road bike that should clear the up pipe . from memory I think this was a fold out kicker that was used in the early 70s it gave a bit more stroke in length of kick . I have a old Aussie dirt mag Ill try to find the artical and post it .
-
I use both DT2MX and MX250 kickers on my DT1/RT1 Yamaha's. They've got a better leverage and tuck out of the way much better than the original. A DT400 CDI and a decent decompressor in the spare plug hole (not the piss poor original RT1 gizmo) make them much easier to start.
I removed the kick starter on my RT1 before I did my old bones damage!. If I can't find some-one to push it bad luck!
Wally, first step is to find you a DT400 CDI and a decent decompressor and then you won't need to troll the Nepean pits looking for a sucker to push start you ;D.
-
Pulled the bowl on the fuel tap off today and the whole carb and cleaned both out both full of sh1t no wonder it wouldnt rev suprised it ran at all havent ridden it since because it fowled a plug and couldnt get it to clear then found a plug similar in the boat got it going 10:00pm and what a difference revs very free might be a different bike to ride, was a bit underwhelmed after riding modern stuff for so long but think it might be different now.

You have that 'How do you turn this thing off? ' look on your face. :D Great photo. And look at that smooth skin. Young and dangerous!
-
That's a Camel jersey ... looks like some sort of schoolboy class at a British GP perhaps? (I don't
think it is TM Bill.)
Every time your 360 kicks back, you are one step closer to cracked idler gears and
a split/cracked clutch cover ... which starts where kickshaft emerges. So, it's well worth lubing
and de-coking that decompressor!
-
Yep its a schoolboy race at Colemore in the south east , it was the first race i ever holeshot ;D but came undone later when i threw a chain ::)
The Camel bib i bought at the British GP ( you could buy ones with out numbers and put on your own ) wish i still had it .
Probably would have been better off spending the money on a pair of goggles ::)
-
Oops - sorry TMB! Any chance you have more pix from this day?
It's a fabulous photo :)
-
I do have some others from events of that era but i had better start another thread as i feel i am hijacking his one ::)
The photographer was a bloke called Ken Rimmel :)
-
Please do - I hope there's pix of that yummy little Yammie!
-
Sorry its a bit small :) Bee Gee hair cut, muscle t shirt and all ;D

Its about 1976 and the first love of my life Trisha ( who had the most amazing tits and more patience than any woman i have ever known ) was the 3rd most important thing in my life after MX and the Arsenal ;D Southampton Scummers won the cup , Roger won his last championship and Noycey was our golden boy at home. Chicago , the four seasons and Johnny Mathis were on the wireless along with some Swedish sorts who wernt a patch on my Trisha ;D
The arm is a DG one for RM A models that was aquired by a mate for me on the ask no questions account ;D
It was actually a pain in the arse as with the LTR shock mods the chain run was all wrong ::) but we figured it added a bit of class so we put up with it ;D I think the bloody chain near sawed it in half so we put the std one back on ::)
Was a great little bike that was replaced with an RM 125C :)

I think now the years are clouding your judgment and memory bill (photoshop wasnt around in the early days) must have been a good decade but it was the 60/70's free love and all apparently.
