Hard to believe he was 71....where did those years go?
I saw Deep Purple twice, in 72 or so at Sydney Showground and in '85 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and they were brilliant, especially Ian Gillan's amazing voice and Lords keyboards. Sad news.

Jeez, that is a real shame. I was (am) a fan of Deep Purple, but never got to see them live.

a real loss,
so much amazing music came from this bloke and gave Deep Purple that very distinctly unique sound.
RIP John

Was too young/poor to see Deep Purple live but the first single record I ever bought was Black Night as a 12 yo in 1970, and they ( along with Led Zep) remained my favourite bands. At 17 I bought the cassette of Made in Japan and wore it out playing on road trips to MX events all over SA. Saw Jon Lord in October last year at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide when Adelaide Symphony Orchestra played Deep Purple. Went along prepared to be disappointed but it was fantastic. He explained and performed Concerto for Group and Orchestra in the first half, then Vince Contarino and the Zep Boys played all Deep Purples hits with the orchestra in the second half. Jon Lord joined them for Smoke on the Water as the finale encore. Great night, forced my 13 and 15 year olds to come along and see a real rock legend. Since they knew most of the songs from me playing of Made in Japan at full noise late at night, they really enjoyed it. RIP Jon.

Saw them three times in Perth.  The first time was with my then 14 year old son who "came along to keep me company". By the second song the security guards warned him they'd kick him out if he didn't stay put and stop dancing in the isle.
I also have a multiple cd set of them that was "Made In Japan" but of all separate recordings of all songs played at each concert on their Japanese tourmand from which the final album wa made.

yeah i have that cd set as well with the complete Osaka & tokyo gigs, its a classic.another good album is Stormbringer with Dave Cover dale on vocals after Gillian Left (Mk 3 deep purple) then of course Blackmore didn't like the funk of that and left...Enter Tommy Bolin for 1 album and then DP QuitSki till 184 reforming with the Classic MK 2 lineup

I have the complete albums as well with the different members but I have to say while the most recent band with Steve Morse was great, I still like the original band of Blackmore, Gillian, Lord, Pace and Glover!  Jon Lord's C3 Hammond is awesome in the live version "Lazy".

I remember in the 70's they were the loudest band in the world. Two teenage girls hid in the speaker boxes at a live performance and were knocked out because of the deafening volume.

A good honest heavy rock band without the attitude or foul language. Just honest raw rock.

John

My first LP was Deep Purple in Rock when I was about 12, its the only album I still have. I just couldn't part with it even though I haven't got anything to play it on anymore. Saw them at the Ent. Centre in 1985 and they were terrific. Some bastard stole the T shirt  from that tour while it was on the clothesline >:(

Sad news, SWAR FM hear in Sydney did a big tribute to Jon Lord playing a huge array of songs the other night like Bad Attitude, Highway Star, Hush, Kentucky Woman, Knocking At Your Back Door and Speed King just to name a few. From what I hear he was the only member to be there from the beginning through all Mk's of the Deep Purple line up. They were my fathers era also being a pom he was a fan but I do have the Fireball album in the collection. A real no bullsh#t rock band.
