Post by: oldfart on April 05, 2008, 05:04:30 pm
Have change the fork oil  as per book ( 432 cc) high level per tube , this to me is not enough .
Missing from my specifications is table 9 ....being measurement from top of tube to oil level  ::)

150mm from top of fork to oil level collapsed will be in the ballpark ;)

I used to run 10 or 15 W or mix for 12.5W oil. Make sure your springs are within wear/length limit etc. I used to run around 10psi-on my T model this was essential and they were designed to run with air-without they will sack out.The trouble is very few will reliable hold air these days due to worn bushes-non-replacable and cast into outer leg! Some people run XR 250/400 springs these days if you are keen to keep the standard legs-the 82 Z forks are still 38mm but designed to run with no air! Worth a thought.

Thanks for the tips  :)    presently running XR 250 springs ( 2 piece ) and find them a bit stiff.
As the old jobs needed about 20 psi to bring em up to length  ::)
Auto transfluid is in at the moment ( experimenting ) with dampening affect

Oldfart,

Get hold of a pair of top out springs from a set of 38mm kayaba forks (same as you have) and put them above the XR springs. This will reduce the spring rate by about 2 lbs/in. Doesn't sound much but makes a big difference.

Give teh springs about 5mm preload.

If you have the spare cash get some YSS PD valves or Race-Tech cartridge emulators.
