Title: RT-1 Tank Color
Post by: Tahitian_Red on June 30, 2012, 01:30:22 am
Hey fellas,

Originally I was thinking about painting the tank for RT-1 black without the pin-stripe and put on the early red Yamaha badges.  I would like your opinions on some other options.  I could go stock with red pin-stripe and black badges or maybe a red with the white pin-stripe('71 DT-1MX) or...
 ???

My personal favourite is black with the yellow stripe as was on the original '70 first issue RT-1. The stripe/badge combo is what makes these tanks look so good IMO. One without the other doesn't look complete.

but just for something a little different i chose to go the lovely sky blue :)

you could paint yours the same ;D, then in 10years time all the up and coming VMX'ers wouldn't know what colour was origional ;D

When I first got mine it was painted the dark blue, however when I started dismantling the bike I noticed that the tool box and oil tank were black under the blue and have the yellow striping.
When I re-do the tank I want the original black with yellow.
My old passion for keeping machinery as close as possible to original I'm afraid.
cheers pancho.

Just to be different I like the white with red ctr strip style. This was the colour used by the factory team in 1970 for Europe (http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0092-2.jpg)(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m612/Iain_Cameron/DSC_0091-2.jpg)

The rear mudguard on Iain (and Nifty's) DT's appears to be an aftermarket CZ item.

Well I went with the "Batmobile" colors

I think I'm gonna call it the Batcycle.  Would a front numberplate in the bat shape be over the top? ;D

No, but the cape and undies-on-the-outside riding gear would be pushing it  ;) :D ;D

If my tank looked that good I'd be frightenend I might scratch it!
There is a thought-, maybe you will easily be bluffed out of close encounters by my cheaper paint job coming too near!
cheers pancho

Pancho

It is not a perfect paint job and it has a clear coat that makes it look so good.  I didn't go for the "Show Quality" job, because I knew I would race it.  I'm going to put a clear plastic bra over most of it, so it doesn't get messed up too quickly.

I'm am speed challenged, so sometimes it's better to look good than to go fast.  ;D
