At second glance I think the damage is more than just the swingarm, check out the countershaft sprocket cover.
More info Noel?

I'd say the chain probably bunched up around the front sprocket and did that damage..

Looks like internal rust plus (maybe) bottoming out snapped it throwing the chain about and wrecking the conter shaft cover in the process.

Bugger is right ... haven't seen a swingarm snap before.

Looks like the chain guide kept it all together though.  Another use for chain guides  ;D

One day at Nepean we were sitting around my loaded trailer having a post race beer when someone noticed that the swingarm on my DT1 from Hell had cracked almost all the way through, starting where I'd welded on a bracket to mount a Profab chain tensioner. I'd noticed the bikes handling becoming a tad squirilly during the last couple of races but had put it down to my old Michelin wet weather road race slick going off. I reckon one more lap and it would have totally snapped just like Noels.

The moral of the story is to check any welding done on the frame or swingarm.

I've seen the CR250m swingarm of Geoff Holmes snap in half exactly the same as that leading a race at the Aussie titles a few years back..It happened right in front of me and I almost ran into the back of him!

We had the rear swing arm let go on the KTM520 VMC outfit in France-never worked out why but I think we broke two of them. Wondered why the chain kept coming off ??? My head was a bit foggy in the 20min plus two lap races :D :D

Yep I would say weakened by internal corrosion ,and stress where the welds finished,
you are right  J "O"    biggest danger was hoping nobody behind me was going to hit me as I slide to a stop in the middle of a chicane,

My 2000 model KTM 300 broke the arm clean in half just in front of the axle slot.
Couldn’t see any rust in the aluminium either!!
KTM dealership declared “we haven’t seen anything like this before”
‘Haven’t seen anything like this before’ may be the title for my next book!!
