Title: Dirt drag's, what are the chances?
Post by: Curly3 on June 09, 2012, 11:20:06 pm
I've had a fair bit of time to think recently and that could be dangerous.
Unfortunately my racing days are pretty well done & dusted but I know I'll always crave that rush we all get from reaching the start gate.
How does a Dirt Drag Meeting sound, same classes as usual?
My initial thinking is on the Saturday of the Nepean charity meeting, from my experience there is time in the program, I'm thinking of an elimination style event.
I think a competition like this would be the ideal opportunity for quite a few people to safely enjoy that RUSH.
I'm prepared to sponsor the first one myself, obviuosly a donation to the chosen charity.
What are your thoughts.

Sounds like it might start out as a stand alone, over 50's event.
From what I've observed there a lot of guy's who actually hold back out of the start to avoid the first turn crunch.
My problem is that I don't think I can do that and I'm not bagging those who do.
I think it'll bring a lot a guys & bikes out of the shed.
Maybe a rapid fire, elimination style event with set classes and a grand final involving all the class winners with a predetermined handicap system.
Just thinking out loud but we could see more 500 sliders up against XT's & XR's with maybe a few simillar questions answered.
One stipulation I would personally put in is that 2 & 4 strokes be kept apart until the final race.
Does it have wheel's, so to speak?

You gotta play to your strengths Mr Pine and obviuosly getting round corners safely aint one of mine.
The leg's okay, had the 2nd op on Thur so hopefully that solves the problem.
I'm heading down to Alex some time this week, I'll meet you at the Erko Bowlo.

I was wondering where to post this photo of a Dirt Sprinter, now Steve has solved that problem for me, found this on the JAP Engine facebook page.

I love the intense look on old mates face and the sheila with her fingers stuck in her ears !!!
Kuno Karlsson is the rider and the event is the Stellan Strandh Memorial

The bike has a cable rear brake fitted and a different LH side footrest

The Dirt Sprint event the old fella on the JAP/Jawa is competing in seems to be part of a Scandinavian Rockabilly, muscle car, bike event.

Great idea Slidz, I'm in straight line fever, do we have enuff run off at the end of straight at Nepean? My 500 won't be ready, but I'll throw in the other RM.

Great idea Slides. The pic of the mature gentleman getting ready to let rip says it all.
Might get a few 500 sliders out of hiding. Can only hope.

Shite, I'm starting to think this could be a goer.
Nepean has some run off, there is an unused longtrack corner that runs off the end of the start straight, I would think that the compulsory braking point would be increased by at least 20m.
Having said that I know there are plans to re - configure the top longtrack corner to make the circuit even more adaptable.
Honestly it'll give more people, ( sensible old codgers ), a chance to enjoy the competition.
How good will it be to see Firko drop the clutch in ernest again?
I'm now in exactly the same boat now, but I'd love to throw everything at it for however long it'll take.
I personally know of a few people that this type of an event would suit perfectly, it might not happen this year but I think it'll happen.
Foss, how about you n me put on a " Demo " at the up coming charity meeting?
If you win I'll buy you a carton of ciggies but if I win I want a bottle of Chivas Regal.

At Nepean I think you would run it on the back straight with the finish where the spectators are,
rubber band start finish a bit past the usual finish line so time to back off for the speedway corner

I've just realized how much interest there will actually not be in just the two of us racing in a straight line, I think we'll need people like Firko, TH & even the enigmatic Mr Burkett to join us, I'll be on the phone to Trev tomorrow but his biggest problem will be finding a genuine "500" to ride, I'm not racing against a 750 and he'll want a carton of Johnny Walker.
Ian, surely this gets your competitive juices flowing?

P.S. I hear you Noel but that corner scares me at the moment.
If we did we should make up a set of christmas lights.

I bags riding Jonesy's 850 Nourish Redline flat tracker.....90hp ;D  Failing him loaning me the bike it'll be fun on the big Metisses and even my little 2 stroke trackers. I hope this doesn't go the way of the legendary 100cc class....a great forum idea that died in the arse once the cyber racer factor was removed.

You can ride whatever you want Firko, it'll be all about getting the power down, I reckon I'll still get ya. ;)
I initially ran it up the pole to see if there was any interest and I think there might be more than I thought.
I'll run it past the powers that be and see what sort of a reaction I get.
I'm serious about the demo at the next charity meeting because the way things are looking I'll still be hobbling around by then, we could do it on a set of 6 runs on a point score basis.
I'm sure the corner is still there Micks but hasn't been maintained for a while.
Anyway it's all pie in the sky at the moment.

We ran a dirt bike drag meet at the Ballarat airport drag strip back in the day .Had about 50 dirt bikes turn up ,everyone had a blast professionally run and I think the fastest bike was a wr500 .I will post photos tonight.

I had a good chat with the track Maestro, Tony Garrard today.
As Jim mentioned earlier there is a distinct possibility that the startline will be moved to another part of the track, where the startline is now points all the exhaust noise straight towards the nearest neighbour, there is a noise report in with council right now.
No need for panic, these are things that can be dealt with.
I'm heading out for the 2nd round of the West Syd DT series this weekend and will raise the subject of a Dirty Drag event with those who matter.
Tell Jonesy to keep working on the Nourish beast Mark, I can see your dickie legs flapping out the back as you let it rip. :P
But you'll be loving every second of it, just don't glaze over and forget to back off at the finish line.

In an attempt to see if this idea is workable and also after speaking to few officials involved at Nepean, I'm gunna lay down a few ground rules for a possible demo event at the up coming charity meeting in August.
Riders have to be over 50yo
Bikes are pre85
500cc 4 stroke & 250cc 2 stroke
Slider, MXer, US Flatracker, Sidecar? or dare I say, Roadbike?
The amount of interest will dictate if we can have classes.
It's no where near a done thing but logistics need to be provided.
We won't need too many officials, I'm prepared to provide the starter and even the " finisher ", if required.
Would that be cheating?

Well there's a match race on it's own because Foss is pretty keen.
You two have to start next to each other.

Don't put your condom's, protective clothing, on just yet.
It look's like we may have a goer but unfortunately it will be a bit late to include it in for this years Charity meeting on the 4/5th of Aug.
I'll be out at Nepean from Fri for the whole of this weekend for the King of meeting and It'll give me a good chance to discuss it more with the powers that be, so far so good.

Could not let this one rest!
Its a good time of the year to start throwing this great idea around again, beng that calenders are being drawn up, I reckon a swap meet and dirt drags would be a great money spinner for any club. ;D

G'day Darren, dirt bike junkie.
Here's the latest on both of those ideas.
There have been long term noise issues at Nepean and moving the start line down to the opposite corner of the track is on the cards in the near future, unfortunately until that happens the Dirt Drag idea will have to be put on the backburner, hopefully not for long.
As for the Swapmeet idea for the Saturday of the charity meeting, so far it looks like being a goer next year but not confirmed just yet.
I've put my hand up as one of the BWP delegates for Nepean, I've got my first meeting next Monday and will know a bit more on both these proposals after that.
Stay tuned because I reckon they're both goers, only if there is strong support.

G day Steve
I ran a swap meet at Morriset for over 10yrs and I can honestly say that a bike only swap would be well supported.
There is still a huge number of blokes who choose not to go down the ebay path.
It is also a good oportunity for blokes to get away for the weekend with their mates, camp and have a few beers with the excuse of getting all the junk out of the shed.
The charity weekend would be a great date and would certainly help spread the word on the joys of vintage dirt track  ;)
Ive been riding all my life and only found out about it 2 years ago and I"m hooked.
How many more injuries could I have if only I had discovered it earlier ;)

Mind you the massive torque steer jump to the left at take off might be tricky.
