Title: Harrow Vinduro 2012
Post by: odd1 on June 04, 2012, 09:59:00 pm
Just asking the question as to how many riders that  have attended the Harrow vinduro over the last few years would like to see it become 2 full days of vinduro as opposed to what we have presently half day on the special test track Saturday and a full vinduro on the Sunday?

I don't think I could cope with the stress of being lost for 2 days instead of just one.

I think it works well as is as some don’t get down there till half way through Saturday and it becomes a bit more social as everyone stays in the same area around the Special test / MX track.

I have been to a few Harrow Vinduro's and when I go I get there on the Thursday so that I can set up camp and then spend time checking out things in the local area, then on the Friday people start arriving and it's normally a great social evening Friday, the Saturday track is fun, but I would rather 2 days of Vinduro loops myself, much like the the way Rockley Vinduro is, either way Harrow is well worth the visit as Lochie Turners property is a top place to ride at and you could not meet a nicer gentleman than him.

I am planning on going this year if all go's well with bike rebuild.

Cheers Mick.

Ha ha!  :D

I don't usually arrive 'til Sunday morning as I've got family in the area and so work in a visit at the same time. So, for me, I'm happy enough with the format as it is.

Its a very good format as it is.
Title: Re: Harrow Vinduro 2012

Another thought: If it was run as a full two day event, I think there’s a chance that people might start to pack up and leave early on the Sunday for the long drive home. This would make the final presentation on Sunday a bit of a fizzer.

In any case there are no plans at this stage to change the format for this year.

Stay tuned for more news soon about Harrow 2012.

I'd love a two-day Vinduro - proper parc ferme overnight and all the rest - in a lot of ways, Harrow would be the ideal event to do it. Maybe reverse the course for Sunday.

BUT, the logistics would suck (two days off work!) and you'd risk ruining THE must-do Vinduro of the year.

Post by: SPANISH ARMADA on June 05, 2012, 06:34:31 pm
Might be good idea but it all works fine the way it is. But it starts with the land owner first and those that rode last year would have to agree the land didnt didnt look that great anymore after over 100 bikes went round quite a few times so we need to look after what we have in land owners not just at harrow and not want too much .

Speaking of Harrow...
Hi all,
Entry forms should be up on the  Vinduro Victoria site before too long...
http://vindurovictoria.blogspot.com.au/

NEWS FLASH: Norm Watts will be riding my SWM GS250RS. I've just got off the phone to him and he and Stefanie will be there on the Friday.

Norm was the father of enduro in Victoria. He planned, laid out and controlled the first events in the early 1970s with his club; Maffra-Sale MCC. Norm would dump fuel in the bush for his exploration rides and often sleep out overnight when ever it got dark.Names like the Alpine Enduro, the Howitt Devistator and the Newry 2 Day became know as relentless tough events; lots of tight going, through creeks and rugged ridges.

His association with John Burrows, AMTRA co-founder and organiser of the first organised trail rides in the country, saw him ride Ossa, Can Am & Husky for JB's shop over the years before breaking a wrist at the 1977 Czech ISDT on Yamaha IT and then importing the first SWM GS250RS into the country through Bert Flood.

On this bike, he won the first A4DE at Cessnock in 1978 (organised by departed legend John Hall and the Cessnock MCC) through sheer persistence and fast but steady riding. He competed on the SWM in Sweden in the 1978 ISDT (Silver medal) and again in Germany in 1979 (Silver). He rode both the Welsh ISDE in 1983 and the Aussie ISDE in 1992 on Husky (Silver and Bronze).

Norm is now more famously know as the father of Shane, multi ISDE Gold Medal winner, World Enduro Champion, ISDE Class winner and outright winner of the Aussie ISDE in 1998. He then went on to spank the Yanks on their GNCC events. Other son Darren was happy to let Shane carry the glory and enjoy his trail riding.

It's worth spending a little extra time to look around Harrow too.
I spent a night there a few weeks ago  and wandered up and down the main street in the morning. Lots of interesting stuff to see.  ;D

Plus it was really nice camping there without a couple of hundred noisy, snoring motorbike types hanging around.  :D :D :D :D :D

In answer to odd1's question, I'd love it either way but I do agree that we need to be careful not to out stay our welcome. There aren't many towns that get behind motorcycle events like Harrow does, so we need to protect that.

Greg,

Entry forms seem to be a secret handshake this year - I only got it because I asked on EBT. I can't find it on the vindurovic blog, haven't seen it on the mailing list, hasn't been on any of the usual forums etc - dunno if this link will work: http://endurobiketalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=5557.msg26530#new
I can email it to you if it doesn't.

Definitely not in the spam folder (lucky I checked in there though - got a free trial of some 'supplements' on their way, and my YouTube inbox was full so I've entered all my passwords again to fix that).

Think the problem might be with yahoo - the Northern Districts club guys were having the same problem with this account...

Late edit: thanks to Tex for going well beyond the call of duty in sorting this out. :)

Answers to a few questions that have come my way...

Will I be able to leave fuel somewhere out on the course?

Yes. Fuel supplies can be left at the Main Control. Fuel containers can be sent with officials to the Main Control on Sunday morning. If you’re entering on the day and wish to deposit extra fuel at the Main Control, please allow yourself plenty of time, as these officials will leave the parc ferme early.

Can I bring more than one motorbike?

Yes. There are no fees for additional bikes. All bikes being ridden on the course will need to abide by the event guidelines (i.e. Pre 85, etc). You will need to take any riders cards or sheets with you, and affix a duplicate of your issued bike number (texta or tape is fine) on any additional bikes that are ridden on the course.

Is Harrow suitable for novices?

Not really. While any competent rider should be able to get around the course, and you don’t have to complete all of the sections, people with little or no riding experience will probably struggle (especially if it's wet).

What are the accommodation options?

The preferred option is camping at Harrow. There are powered and non-powered sites available at very reasonable rates, call 03 5588 1205 to book. There is also limited accommodation at Harrow’s Hermitage Hotel, but it's probably all booked out now, call 03 5588 1209.  For those seeking motels or similar accommodation the closest towns offering this are Edenhope and Casterton.

That's easy Greg. The forecast will be "We're worried about dust, the river will be down, and it will be a bit cool".
When you get there, half the course will be a bog-hole, the river will be a six foot deep torrent, and it will be bloody freezing*... :D

Like the arrowing, the weather forecast is a pantomime that is actually part of the appeal of this event (seriously).

*OK, I might be exaggerating about the temperature - you might need a long sleeve t-shirt, rather than anything outrageous like long pants.

Jeez, the internets gone crazy with wild fury, disagreements and threats of takeouts abound from all sides.
And all this came about without anyone even mentioning any rules.

Little do they know that DH will probably take out both teams and then innocently declare “Oh sorry, I didn’t see you fall off in front of me” while completely ignoring the fact that he would have pulled over and let them by first.

The Wales logo is a nice shade of blue and should be quite a contrast with the dark complexion of the coal miners. It looks like an enormous amount of thought has gone into the team logo selection process. Should look exceptional on the heshin jackets and matching velour pants.

Trust Drakie to score the nice babe , shouldnt be to difficult to charm her off the old czech guys , this is shaping up to be a cracker of of a week.

It’s that time of year again, no not sorting out the BAS payment, that’s all organized. I mean it’s time to fob off customers and actually work on my own bike for a change.
It’s been a scary week, I missed Harrow last year because my missus was crook and now this year she’s been crook all week again.

Luckily she’s not too bad so I need to make my escape as early as possible before she does get really crook again. “Sorry love, must have been in a bad reception area and I didn’t get your call that you needed me”

All is good though, she told me it was okay to go away for the weekend, although she seemed to get here words mixed up a bit, she said I could bloody well go to Hell. It must be because she hasn’t been well that she said Hell instead of Harrow? Or maybe it was a reference to the folklore tales of past Harrow events?
Whatever, I’m off

Got the bike all ready today and started loading up. It was a bit unsettling loading up as it’s been a slow drizzle all day long but it hasn’t fazed me. I just want to be part of the legendary Harrow experience.

I want to experience the fabled creek crossings that would have me believe that in previous years the river was capable of washing cars downstream.

I want to experience the endless Welsh like mudbogs that would trap innocent riders just like the Dinosaurs were trapped (even though you could actually ride around them).

I want to see for myself these famous bridges across raging torrents that are made of matchsticks or the slippery wooden planks just under the surface of the water that would trap the unwary.

But more than anything I want to be able to make up my own tales of hardship and how I conquered the terrain of Harrow

See you there.

Unfortunately for me and my bank account, one of the PEs seized and $800 worth of parts later plus labour I only just picked it up today.
I'm looking at doing Bagshot in September but I'm going down to Briagolong this weekend for the off-road and might just test it there.
Have fun at Harrow and see you at Yanakie - with a bit of luck you'll have that Yammie sorted out

Good luck - I will pass your sledging comment on to Black Danny.  I am sure you will get your chance at beating him, but I think he has other plans.

Team Husky NSW

3 team riders finished the event.

Great tough hit out , with some tricky sections , nice river crossings , tricky traverses , nice long hills (up and down) , flat out top gear transport sections and a couple of killer bog's "if you were not careful". The special test "sand" MX track was just awesome

Credit to Drakey , fab. event .

If you get the chance , next year , don't miss this event. This event is a great test of Vintage  bike and rider.

What a fantastic ride, a real challenge and loads of fun.

Many thanks to the CSC and the team of workers that set up the course, What a privilege to be able to ride on such a great property!

It's worth the long drive; it's just that good.

What to ride next year?

But what of the Welsh I hear you say?   ???

Good question XC83

What ever happened to the Welsh team, i think the Captain of the Welsh team (to his credit) finished the event , but it was on a borrowed bike.

This should / will make for a  good part of the final ride report , and i think there are photos to confirm this.

I have been advised that there may be team defections before next years event , "such intrigue already" and its 52.0 weeks until we get to do the Harrow event again.

There was much controversy at the offical photo session outside the welsh Embassy on Sunday afternoon.

Approximately 250 sleeps left to go....it's coming up fast.

I can confirm a rumour about the Welsh Captain... no no no, only the one about defections....

Whilst on an expedition recently to the North Shore of Sydney driving on Pittwater road I saw a group of large tents set up in a park, most were white but there was one in amongst the trees in full camo, it wasn't as tall as the others and looked familiar, this made me suspicious. I pulled over and to my surprise I saw a little SWM being ridden by a gent with red curly hair, red nose and big floppy feet, it was him - the ex Welsh Captain, he looked a little pale with dark rings around his eyes, perhaps he was being worked too hard, who knows. But one thing is for sure...the humiliating defeat dealt by the Husky NS(W) team at the 2012 event was too much for him to bare and that's why he's run away with the circus.

I'd add swamp navigation for dummies to the reading list and I'd take 'Goat Herding in Mountainous Areas' at TAFE (not sure if there are pre-requisites for this) as this will allow you to traverse hills and rocky outcrops on Goat Tracks.

Dear team Husky New South
250 Sleeps before the nightmare begins for team Husky New South. While you sit on your laurels and bask in your past glory, you are right that team Wales was spotted at the circus but it was in fact Travis Pastranna's Nitro Circus where we have been practicing the globe of death ready for the hill of death and the bogs of doom which Drakie has assured me will be included this year. the rumours coming out of your camp is that you have some international has been joining your team, which can only mean that there has to be a shake up who's been dropped to make way?

True or untrue , Im not sure

However as well as the brand teams of three , 2013 may include for Trophy and Vase teams , therefore increasing the size of teams and furthering our effort of stamping the WELSH DEEPER INTO THE BOGS.

The only redeeming thing the Welsh will have , is a very , very gun rider. I happened to be there when the question was asked of "THE RIDER".
It will be a big call for this Rider to carry the whole Welsh team on his shoulders.

"The Rider" will no doubt finish and finish very well , but the Welsh team he has joined and paticularly the current Captain are very doubtfull.

Don,t worry about the Welsh captain the only time he doesn't finish is when he is carted off on the ambulance and that is because he failed to persuade the driver to finish the course he must have been part of the husky new south team as he said it was to tough. Besides Reeksy won't beable to string 2 finishes together on that PE he will kill it. Don't be thinking of lending him MY husky auto. QLD are threatening to send a team but have already let slip they might have to recruit a new south Welshman in order to finish it really is a bit rich bringing in ring in's
Welsh team

I would like to clarify my comments regarding the Captain of the Welsh Team , we as a team do not cast doubt of his ability as a rider to finish the event only on his dubious skills in relation to the mechanical preparation of a bike capable of carrying him the distance .

Bearing in mind the Captain of the Welsh team finished the 2012 Harrow event on one of our Husqvarna auto's  he borrowed , which by the way is now on long term loan to insure the Welsh team is not overly embarrassed in 2013
 by a total DNF.

The Welsh Captain made a point of telling me that the QLDers are girls and dont like mud , i thought that was a bit tough .

Yours in Harrow and bogs
Captain of The Husky NSW Team

Are you sure he said that?  I can’t understand anything he says ???

Anyhow what would he know?  As long as there are nice clean amenities with separate cubicles and it’s not raining we’ll woop em.

Dear Captain Patchwork
It is obvious that something was lost in translation, I told him it was a desert and was all on sealed roads but never mind. You will be pleased to know that I have been preparing the Husky to the same exacting standards as my own but now realize why the bike was so slow last time the gear stick had fallen off so must have been stuck in 1st now the bike should really fly and another thing it didn't have a clutch lever either never mind it is all sorted now. Managed to craft all the  parts out of paper mashau and play doe.
I see Drakie Has bought another Jawa I think he has been sold a lemon looks like a Honda C90 step threw and is hinting that the well known Cezch rider David Knight might be doing a few vinduro's it will take him a while to work out that the kick start is on backwards so don't see him any competition to the Welsh team.
Kind regards
Welsh Team

Ah ha, so the smack talk is hiding some serious reservations about these Intersate Trophy and other Teams standing up to the rigors of Harrow 2013. We will have to hold a separate bitumen course for the Queenslanders so they don't get dirty or wet as Norm Watts is bringing down his period correct 'arrowing bike' to help set the course, which gives even me cause for concern. Gawd help us if Cater comes on board, can we handle two tough men laying out bunting through the swamp?
Team Wales has a lot to live up to and it's true that their 'face in every mag' leader might have to literally carry the team but keep in mind his choice of bike will see him probably carrying that to the finish too.
"Back flips at the Nitro Circus?"....that clown 'Back Flip Baker' is only capable of flipping allegiences onto any odd bike that will see him to the finish.
Stay posted on an addition to the course on the Sat arvo and we have booked the Mechanics Insitute hall for the Saturday Night shitfest um, Team presentation dinner.

Yes April the 1st

So who's been at the circus then?

Is there any truth to the rumour that there will be separate a mini-bike class up to 390cc?

A former international in the Husky NS(W) team heh (hope i'm not the weakest link), trade teams, Trophy teams and Vase teams. International teams, former internationals in the field and maybe in the Welsh side. Certainly THE premier Vinduro in Australia.

Hmmm....this begins to sound like a threat. My sensitive sensitivities  are offended on behalf of Team France. However, the legs from the frogs are not quivering given that the captain of the Welsh team, a hedgeborn, mouth breathing bog boy (do not take this personally, I just state facts) is unlikely to be able to make anything more complicated than a blunt pencil, let alone a motorbicycle, operate effectively - as evidenced at the last Le Tour de Harrow.
Uncultured cochon - they are escargot!

Harrow 'International' Vinduro, the last weekend in July, the 27-28th.
This gives our international guests time to recover from  Auroux 2013 - 13/14 July in France and catch a flight to Baker Boyo's for the trip south.
