Title: Sh#t What was I thinking??!!
Post by: Bitten on May 14, 2012, 09:27:21 am
Some times you charge ahead in a mad rush and just make things worse!

I wanted to clean up the RM465Z on Saturday after a recent ride on a friend farm and didn't have a lot of time so pulled off all the plastics and the exhaust (I needed to clean this up to stop surface rust as its a GMC in raw metal)

Anyway to cut it short I was splashing the hose around with some fervour before realising that I didn't block up the exhaust port and there is no telling how much water got in.

Then I think to myself no issues I will just drain the oil and all will be sweet, put it all back together, drain the oil - no water in it and was thinking disaster averted!

Then half way through mother day lunch the penny dropped!

What is the best way to go about this

1. Try and start it
2. Pull the spark plug out and invert it
3. Other??

Also will I need to do any remedial work on the crank or anything else

Yours in stupidity

Bitten

Blast in some CRC water disspersent and invert it, then slowly crank it over to get the last of the water out. Reassemble and tow start it as they are a bitch to restart once wet internally.

Basically the same as drowning an enduro bike in a creek.
Plug out
Spray the be-jeezus out if it
Flip bike over onto seay and bars
Prod thru a few times to blow excess out
Flip back over, plug back in-check you have spark 1st
Kick her in the guts and hope you are still on your minute :D

Yep, been there, done that.

Also in your favour is a 50 / 50 chance the piston may have been down which would have closed off the port and it may be that stuff all water actually went in.

Geoff, doesn't the piston have to be up to close off the exhaust port?
Cheers, Grahame

reminds me of a funny story from years back......A mate was washing his scooters after a good days racing when he gets a 'phone call (pre mobile days-so a fair while ago) so he hands the running hose to junior(about 5 or 6yrs old)((must have been bloody ages ago-pre water restrictions)) and goes to the 'phone saying "just hose them off for me little mate."
He returns 10 mins later to see the boy holding the hose in the exhaust with water going everywhere-he had "filled all the bikes up-FOR DAD".
Jeez-it's hard to get good kids- isn't it?  :D :D

It’s for the like of Rossco and CanAm that I have had to include warning labels now so I have been researching some warnings that may be suitable for them…

Warning: This product can burn eyes."
Do not use in shower."
Do not use while sleeping or unconscious
Do not place this product into any electronic equipment
This product is not to be used in bathrooms
Caution! Contents hot
Do not use orally
Do not use for drying pets."

As for warning signs we had a sign in our workshop at work, that stated.
(WARNING THIS SIGN HAS SHAPE EDGES)
Getting back to the origanal post. The piston in a single cylinder engine should always stop when the compression in the cylinder over comes the inertia of the crank/piston, therefore the exhaust port/valves should always be closed when you stop an engine. I never block the exhaust when I'm washing my bikes I just start and run them to make sure that, all is sweet.
