Seems to need a lot more than just tyres and cables. I would also like a lot more bike for the price.

Depends if you want one bad enough ;) Sure you can probably pick up a race ready one for a grand more but you may have to wait a while for one to come up . The importers will tell you that they will get you one out of amaoricar race ready for the same price landed.
Marc FX will be on here soon to tell you he got one in Japan for a dollar 80cents ;D
But early KXs are fairly rare , depending on who you ask there competitive or not ( i believe they are ) a resto can be tricky as parts are not in great numbers and the cylinders are plated from the factory and usually worn out by now ( so theres another $500.00 plus piston kit )
74 models are rarer and fetch more money , 3 of my favorite bikes are my 74 KX 125 and 250 and my 76 KX 250 so i am biased ;D

Nice bike and the owner was a top bloke , but its a 76 model fitted with a 79 motor so a bit of an orphan unless you fit the correct motor .

Again a nice race ready bike but a 76 not a 74

The bike does need more than just cables, tyres and shocks but I don't think $2800 is such a bad price fior a bike that's in reality a pretty rare bit of kit. As Bill says, it's really down to how badly someone wants it.
The downside of this bike as a potential race bike is that as a ;75 model with 7" x 4" suspension travel it's too new for pre '75 and too primitive for pre '78, it's stuck in that tough void that most '75 models find themselves. However as a restoration, CD/HBBB bike it's a perfect candidate.
*It's sad to see Chris Drakes bikes for sale on Trade Me. I knew Chris reasonably well and liked him and his strange quirks. It's a sad reminder that depression can grab anyone at anytime.

Are the forks correct? Seems odd to me that it is this condition given it is an Aus based bike

Yep Mick forks look correct :)

That's a lot of money for that bike.. it needs countless hours and lots of money spent on it to make it into a nice bike.

The Kawas were rare around the East coast of Aus back in the day. They only seemed to begin to come on a bit as I was fading out of MX in the mid 80s but the other 3 of the big 4 were where all the bikes were sold during the mid to late 70s and early 80s in our region, for us racers that is. Not sure how popular they were for the weekend warriors.

For what it needs might be cheaper to get more complete runner from states

My thoughts exactly.. You'd get a mint one for the same money.
