Hey Tom,
A lot of that stuff could be found through Jared at [email protected]
For the wheels and stuff you might just have to hang foul like the rest of us on E-bay. Most of the wheels and stuff are interchangable with other models (Enduro, older Cappra's etc) so even if you pick up a clunker the wheels, axles and stuff should be ok.
Amal levers are still fairly easy and are the best to run. You'll probably have to make a seat up from a base and foam from Jared. There seems to be no covers at the moment but they'll probably come along again...... ;)
-
R,
Did you check out the pics of the bike? Dosn't look like a VB to me.
First thing I noticed besides the frame colour (which could have been painted)
is the side cover bracket mount toward the rear. VB's never had those.
-
Also the shock resevoir mounts, VF for sure.
-
Tom, thats a nice looking VB, how did the parts get seperated? Its amazing, a lot of the small detailed things are there but the big items are missing :o ::) :P.
The complete seat is available from Jared, f/glass base, new foam and cover $55, $49 and $69.

As Ross said wheels and brake backing plates shouldn't be too hard to find. The swing arm might be harder - the good news is that someone like GMC might be able to whip up a replacement for reasonable cost.
Have you got the tank? I cann't see it there in the pix. I'm after tank decals myself. Jared is on the case and has been seeking them out for sometime.
OME Amal levers are available thru ebay. Reasonable price around the $30US plus postage.
Are you sure it a VB. The red frame and the brace behind the rear shock throws me ::). Or have tou sprayed the frame?
-
Problem with those Amal lever clones on Ebay, is that they
are cast aluminum and break easy. The originals were forged
and bendable. New oem Amal lever assemblys are in the $95 range
unfortunatly.
-
Sorry. Didn't realize there were pics. Yeah. I'd say a VE/VF. The handle-bar clamps are a little weird though. Unless they had different ones because of the 35 mm forks.
-
Tom,
If Jared right, and he probably is ;D, your bike should look like this;
Which is why I asked did you have the tank.
-
Jeezez! Some fat bugger's been sitting on that seat! Or it's the free-style model.....
-
The engine number of Tom's bike is 73M-15620. Could be 1978 VB or a later model. I have a '78 VB360 which indeed does have the rails behind the shocks and they have remote reservoir Betors as standard, although the brackets in the photo look non genuine. I have the brochure for the '78 VB series as well, which clearly shows the brackets and remote reservoir shocks. 1978 VB360's are fairly rare with the factory only making 400 of them, not sure how many 250's were made. I can help Tom with the wheels and some other stuff, but he already knows that. Jared may be able to identify from the engine number. Your memory must be going Ross, or maybe you didn't take much notice when you saw mine a while ago.
Cheers,
K

73M15620<--- This is the frame number is it a VB or VF?? The frame is defently powdercoated red along witht the triple clamps!!!
As for how I recived this bike missing all the big bits well it belonged to someone I knew who restored it and then pulled it down and stored all the parts in diffrent area's. This bike was in the back room of his house for many years... I never saw it in one pce. He has since passed away and now the rest of the parts have grown legs. So there you have it. It has been totally rebuilt and never run so that is a bonus. Cheers

ross is this the same model we have been talking about ,ie the photos you were getting
-
I have a new rear sprocket and a rebanded one of Lyle's here to the highest bidder ;D
I'll check PCD's etc if your interested

Ahhh! That explains a lot. To see the airfilter held in place by the correct rubber strap but missing the swing arm seemed really odd.
Tom, do you have the Tank; I'm sure that will go a long way toward solving the puzzle as to 'what model'. The VB had the traditional fibreglass monty tank which was bolted to the frame about 50mm behind the s/head with a machined threaded boss welded to the frame. I can't make that out on the photos you have put up.
The VF had the plastic tank which I think was mounted differently.
-
The tank mount is a black bolt sticking out from the the top 50mm back from the head stem. It looks to me as if it is made for the VB metal tank that I see pictured everywhere. I actually just looked through the back log of forum subjects and noticed one to do with side covers. I think this is a very late Capra VB as the tank mount is correct!! I do not have the orignal tank however I have purchased a VB one from the states.
-
(http://C:\mount.jpg) One way to tell if it's a VE or VF is the mount (circled) for the rear
support of the long side panels. Also, the VF was the only model to use a bracket for the shock reservoirs.
Earlier VE's and late VB's were held in place with rubber o-rings!
-
Here's a late model VB. I don't know if the colour is original or if its been changed. This frame has the brace with the shock reservoir (but a different mounting system (half round tube welded to brace with O ring bands)).

Yes you're right Mick. The later VB didn't have the loop behind the seat. The frame colour threw me however it has got the brackets for the longer sidecovers and the reservoir holders as Jared says so yes it'd be a VF/VE. Yes paul the one pictured earlier (plastic yellow tank) is like the one I was telling you about.

Ross does the plastic tank mount the same as the f/glass one, with a bolt 25-50mm behind s/head? You can barely make out the mounting boss in Tom's photo (the cables are hooked around it).
The muffler laying across the frame in Tom's photo is the same as the VF250 I posted earlier (and different from VB muffler).
-
(http://C:\c250vf.jpg) VF 250 without the squashed seat! All tank mounting in the front was the same for the VB/VE/VF/VG.
The rear strap mounting was different in the way the lower portion of the strap was fixed.
-
I've fitted a VB tank to a VE with no problems at all, and no modifications to the frame. Looks heaps better in my opinion.

so after reading all your replies I am confused now lol Well as for the type of bike it is!!! I think that the VE-VF is a better looking bike but I want to keep the bike orginal, so what is it?? Can the engine numbers tell you for sure what it is?? The front schocks and rear ones have are gold in clolor and the rear ones are crosco<--- Italian ones whitch I was told off the latter VE-VF model.
-
The model breaks are as follows.
1978 VB 250 starts at 73M11841 (1600 produced)
1979 VE 250 starts at 73M13468 (1400 produced)
1980 VF 250 starts at 73M14298 (600 produced)
1981 VG 250 starts at 73M15939 (unknown)
If you add the produced numbers on to the starting model numbers, it will not add up.
I cannot account for this, maybe someone has some ideas. (maybe overlapping models?)
The above starting serial numbers were taken from the Montesa parts books for the various models.
Your serial number is 73M15620
Clearly a late production 1980 VF 250
Honda red frame, greenish/gold forks, (same colour clamps) Corte Cosso shocks, yellow plastic tank.
-
I'm pretty sure that it's a VF and I'm pretty sure Christ will come walking through your lounge room before you get the right tank for it (same as in the pics).
Just to be picky :), I've tried fitting my VE tank to the VF frame and the forks hit up against the tank. The VE tank must sit back a little further to avoid this so there is a difference. The VE tank also looks a little shorter...........
The one in MX250's pics there is up the shit and not a good bench-mark to go by. As stated by others before, The VB's had black frames not red. When that guy had the bike for sale, he reckoned it was un-molested but if you look where the paint has flaked off the legs (like that's the factory finish yeah!), you'll see the proper Monty Olive drab fork bottoms underneath. It's got a VE guard on it too.....
-
The VE tank might work with the smaller 35mm forks on the 250. Maybe...
but either tank is going to be hard to find.
-
Well what set out to be a an easy request has turned into a total re-thinking of what I trying to achive. Well it seems by the numbers posted that it is without a doubt a VF Capra. So now all that is left to do is hunt for parts, by some of your posts I think I need to pray for help.
So does anyone have any parts that they would like to part ways with in helping get my project underway??
I have already spoken to a few people and they have helped me out with a few of the parts I need which is awsome.
-
Those Cappra VBs sure are pretty EXCEPT for the sideways number plates. It'd have to be one of the oddest afterthoughts I've seen. It's as if they had built the new bike and then found out that the number plates didn't fit.
"No hay problema" they exclaimed and simply turned the things sideways thinking nobody would notice. This little design fork up spoils a nice bike I reckon.
Do drop in Old fella ;D
But I must agree with you, the side cover placement on the VB is particularly ugly. And that was after they got it so right with the V75 8).
Things didn't improve it with the VE/F, it wasn't until the VG they got it right.
It might adapt something like this if it doesn't upset the Puritans ;D.
-
hey Graeme,
That first photo of yours, is it really a V75? The tank stickers are, but the frame, shocks/shock angle & side number plates look very much like a 74 250 VR - still a very beautiful bike - how much to freight it up to Mackay for a test run?
Mike
-
Can't say I agree, I reckon the sideways plates on the VB's look great and distinguish them from the pack. Love them VB Montesa's just the way they are.
Cheers,
K

i really like the look of that VG.
Rossco, if you ever get one can i have a ride ? actually i would like a ride on your VF,
you wanna ride my 5-hundy at broadford?
-
Watch out hoony i know what ross want's to ride :D :D :-\ and its not your bike ::)
-
You can have a ride of my VF anytime Hoony (Gators too scared!) however I dont think I'll be at Broadford as it's a bit close to the VIPER meet and Mrs 414 may not be happy with that!
You can however ride it at BARRABOOL if your club has reciprical rites with them (most do). Check it out and come for a practice one weekend (bring Hilly with you).
I like the VB side-covers so much that I run them on my VF and it looks pretty cool.
SO THERE :P

some one slap gator ;D
