Does anyone know where I can get four of the allen headed nuts that are used to hold the cylinders down on Cappras ? I know "allen headed nut" sunds like a wierd idea, but trust me, they do exist ! And anyone who has taken the cylinder off a Cappra ( and maybe all kinds of other Montys) will know what I mean.
I don't need new nuts- second hand is fine, as long as they are in reasonable nick.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Nitram

I have pretty much exhausted my supply of these cylinder nuts. Removed them from all my
core motors and new ones from Spain cost over $19ea.! (USD) I wish I could find someone to
make them. Anyone want to step up to the plate?

what do they look like (pic)

(http://C:\nut.jpg) Specs: 7mm allen at top, rest is threaded. length is 24mm.
Allen nut area is about 4.5mm deep.
Looks like the allen nut area is separate piece that is pressed down on to the threaded nut.
I can just see a parting line on the outside.
These particular allen nuts were used on just about every Montesa motor from 1967 to 1991!

I needed some for a bike I was restoring. A 'machinest' friend of mine turned some up in a couple of hours.
He used high tensile bolts parted the head off, drilled the centre completely through ready to tap the thread. Parted off the correct length. Drilled one end the depth of the allen socket section at the same diameter as the 7mm Allen key across the flat. He then installed a section of a 7mm Allen key with a slightly sharpened end in the dead centre chuck. The new 'nut' was held in the lathe chuck and heated to dull red and the Allen key was forced into the new nut this formed the Allen Key socket. The Nut was then tapped from the other end, then turned off to the correct OD.
Sounds complex but was very successful and did not really take long.

What about drilling/tapping out a bit of BMS then just brazing on a 7mm allen head ??? Alternatively drill/ tap the BMS and machine the top bit to say a 12/10mm hex?Get really fancy and machine them from 4130 CrMo better still EN36a and have them heat treated..... job done.
