G-day All, have been trying to find a photo i saw somewhere on the forum last year of Ray Owen racing a slider in a scramble event. The picture shows him with his bum in the air off the bike but he is still hanging on to bars and knowing him, still on the gas. It's a great shot and would like to use photo at HBBB this easter....... Regards Les

JAP 454 mentioned that photo in a post about First Sliders, dont think it was shown on here, he refered to OBA, which is Old Bike Australia magazine, there was also a couple in an old Two Wheels i've got if they're any use to ya.
Cheers KB

That would be great if you could post them on here KB. We are doing something "special" for Ray at the motocross re-union on the Friday night down at the Speedway shed. It shouldn't be missed, will be great !!......... Regards Les

Thanks a million KB. Yeah your right mate the bloke is a living Legend. "Tell you what" he hasn't lost any of his humour and his memory of the past is outstanding. Just a joy to talk to...... Regards Les

Go to Vintage Track page 2 then click on Who's who of Speedway Past pages 4/5. There is a fair bit on Ray Owen there. Ray was good mates with the late Harry Rowe who in turn was my Dads best mate. Ray's son in law built my first slider. Pics of it in Dirt Track Images. Funny man is our Ray. Ride anything ;D

Thanks Mark for the directions to those couple of pages you mentioned. There was the photo i was talking about, great shot.!!!
Mark i also read on one off those pages you have some footage of a Grasstrack event at Cambellfield in the 60's of Ray. We are showing a few video's on the night of the re-union of different things etc. just wondering if a copy of Cambellfield is available to show on the night too. Would be great to see ................. regards Les

Regards Mark

Thanks again Mark, your bloods worth bottling!!!!! regards Les :)

Ray Owen is definitely the "Slider" pioneer in OZ.
My father always said, that little bastard can ride a bike, in admiration of course.
A true legend of the sport.
There are people out there who think Mark's blood is worth spilling, I'm not one of them.
Hope you're well Mark.

Yeah your right on there about Ray the pioneer. Some of the stories he has told me of the early days just ring with braveheart. He said of some of his grasstrack days with huge sprockets that you had to be careful leaning over to far because the sprocket dug into the track but true to Ray he keeped the power on and won anyway. Even his last racing years agains't Rod Hunter, Chris Kelly and Co he could still show em how it was done....... Really been no other like him since that could win in all diciplines....... regards les

Fair effort ey?

Les, back then they rode anything with 2 wheels & on any track, these days they start off on MX, the best grounding, then go onto one either road racing, Speedway or stay in MX.
Short Circuit came into being because of the lack of bitumen tracks way back then, hence the tracks were oiled.

I,ve got the dvd. Will have to edit the thing because its got all sorts of stuff on it. Weddings, paddock bombs, kids on push bikes, the old family house plus Ray and a fair bit of other short circuit from the '60's/70's .It plays on my mum's tv but not my brothers. I'll try on mine tonight. Cheers Mark
-
Thanks so much Mark, Good luck with the editing. I myself have got some tapes too that have all sorts of things. Look forward to seeing the final result. All the best ........... Kind regards Les :)

This photo was taken at a scramble at Research (near Eltham) in the mid 1960's.
I was riding at the same meeting and can well remember our amazement when Ray turned up with the Hagon machine.
-
Yeah Jasper i can just imagine the look on everyone's face. I hope you are coming along for Easter friday reunion at HBBB because you would be able to chat to Ray about that day........ Regards Les
-
I'll be there for the full weekend.
-
Phew! I've just gone through all of the film and found the segment of Cambellfield grasstrack.
If you blink you will miss a good shot of Ray but it's still worth a look. There is some great footage that gives a good insight to what it was like back then. Now i will have to take it to someone who can take the footage from the master copy and put it onto another cd for the HBBB. regards Mark
-
I wonder if theres any film work from the Calder short circuit or Romsey meetings in existence .
-
I've got photos of Romsey '76, '77, '78 featuring Gary Chasemore, Phil Crump etc. Will post soon. cheers Mark
-
O.K. Good news Les. We have got the Cambellfield grasstrack with Radar and also some still shots. My brother's mate did them for us. :) I haven't seen it yet but my brother Steve reckons the quality is good. If i can't get there Fri. night Steve will come over. I hope to be there Sat. cheers Mark
