the TT/XT values seem to be dropping back down to the $1500 bikes they used to be.....I mean you would be a mug if you couldn't build an HL out of that for $5000 ;D

true Marc with keeping all the esential parts and selling off the frame/seat/tank/airbox you could do a hl for those $$

I was a little tongue in cheek as the original VMX magazine project HL started out with that kind of budget.

I guess it all depends on what you can do yourself, our friend Ola started with a Husky frame and modified it to suit. If you go for the GMC frame then you are going to be out quite a bit more than 5K. Mine went roughly something like:

GMC frame, exhaust, airbox,pegs  $3800
Engine $2000 (megacycle cam 540 kit)
Ohlins $1000
Wheels $1000
Tank/seat $600
Fox Forks $2000

You can see how you get North of 10K pretty pronto if you go with the good stuff.

true Marc but your ride is a high end bike but if you just wanted a HL then the alot of that thumper could be used and the sale of surplus parts could pay for the yz125c seat/tank and little parts that add up to big $$ plus walter has pretty good shocks for the budget minded builder as wel, maybe 5k wouldnt build a hl but 6k should get something happening which makes Pauls mates HL not a bad buy at $7300 ;)me ive just taken out a 98 .te610 with a blown motor ill use to make a modern hl out of it using as much of it as i can  to keep the cost down.
