Title: '81 KDX rear shock
Post by: YUMASTEPSIDE on February 23, 2012, 11:34:58 am
Does anyone know of an alternative rear shock for an '81 KDX175??
I sent my original shock away for rebuild and mods to carry 115kg (me plus gear )and I'm told they're basically non-rebuildable or adjustable.I can buy a standard replacement but I still can't get it set up for my weight.
Are there any other models that will fit, later KDX, maybe a KX??
If I can't get a shock I'll have to get another bike  set up for Denman Vinduro   >:( >:(

                                    a not happy Roger :'(

Thanks CG......its actually an XL125S bottom end (six speed), with an XL185 crank and CT200 top end, plus a few other mods......and who said you could'nt use those old pull start ag bikes for anything ;D ;D....the pipe is two CT200 pipes cut up and welded together and the muffler, not that it muffles much, is from a TM125 ::)

That's a bummer Roger...

I've got one in pieces. Its definitely possible to rebuild it, but its going to lose some length (not travel) - about 15mm I think. I figured that you could extend the fork and redrill the hole to regain the length.

The only thing that's stopping me is that I can't cut the new snap-ring groove inside the shock body.
The valving is whacky old-old-old-school, so I wouldn't even guess at how to change it.

So... I wonder if the answer is to send my shock to Sean - bet he'll say: "Oh, that's all? No worries".

.......that would be a NO! Sean has mine at the moment ,same answer........lose length, can't cut groove, can't re-valve!  >:( >:( :'(

still not happy Roger :'( :'(

The valve piston could surely be changed to something better (46mm shock bore has been more-or-less the standard size since forever, so there's lots of shocks with that size piston in them).
But then you're probably rapidly approaching the point where Walter's brand new shock will be the cheaper option, not just the better one...

What are your impressions of the shock ? Certainly looks good. Does the shock have an internal reservoir ?
