I have pulled the motor from the beast for a rebuild. After taking the cylinder off I have found some small cracks in both case halves just around the little holes below where the transfer ports would be(main bearing lube holes??) How drastic is this? Anyone seen it before?

just check and make sure they are not casting marks
very unusual to crack there ;D
-
holeshot is right about his Honda knowledge for once, sometimes casting marks do look like cracks
-
Well I am pretty sure they are cracks as my fingernail catches on them. Might have to get an opinion from a bike shop. Hope I am not up for new cases >:(
-
post up some detailed photo's if you want. i have a CR500 pressure plate spare that looks like it is cracked but it is casting marks too. i will post it later to compare if you want
-
Having trouble with pics. I will try 1 at a time

utsman what part of the crankcase is that? can you do a shot from a bit back to show the whole case?
is it in a stressed area?
-
Hey Hooney,
These are the holes that sit just below the transfer ports. I presume they are to lube the main bearinggs. You can see the crank half in the right of the first picture. I would'nt think they are particularly stressed. I will go for another photo.

Here Ya Go Hoony
See the holes on each side of the engine. This is bad aint it?

Stu, i reckon you will be right as they look like casting marks to me.
i will bow to others if they think different. i assume you have not split the cases to look further.
-
Not yet. Let you know how I go.
Thanks Hoony
-
casting marks ;D
-
I'll take your word for it guys.
Cheers :D
-
Utsman i will post up a pic tonight if i get time of a similar casting mark on a CR500 Clutch Prssure plate.
-
God these japs must be in a hurry to knock off of a night! Casting marks all over the place!! :o
-
Utsman, here is a few pics of casting marks on a pressure plate. they look like cranks/fractures but only appear on one side. underside of the plate has some as well and again only on one side and not all the way through.
-
and another 2
-
they dont have enough power to crack pressure plates so you are safe ;D
-
i left myself open on that one hey Holesnot Buddy :D

Just got home from a work stint. No internet for 11 days :(
Thanks Hoony. Your photos put my mind at ease. Rusty is gonna rip into it next week and the bore is at Serco right now. Pick it up tomorrow with a vertex kit, then drop it all to Yandina. Should be riding in 3-4 weeks with a brand new engine. Yee ha .Then all is left is to save for some new plastics. I hate the pinky reddy orange of the 93 era. Anyone know if I can get plastics in the old school red (eighties) for my bike?
Cheers guys.
-
yes the plastics are available from les at vintage plastics he
has show plastics (gloss) or race (not gloss) ??? in that colour very high quality
i wish the yamaha plastics were as good ;D
