Are the ID tags for mid 80's KX's in the usual place on the steering head, I'm going to look at one and need to find out whether it's an 84 or 85.
Cheers

I don't think they ever had an ID tag at all. Only ever frame/engine numbers to identify year model etc.
However, 84 and 85 were very different looking bikes. Has it got the number plates on the rear guard or on the sidecovers?
-
G'day Tony, you're right on the tag thing, the id numbers are stamped into the frame. the bloody thing turned out to be an '85 anyway. I may be wrong but I thought the 84/85 were similar and the 83 had the rear guard/number plate arrangement?

if your looking for a 84 there one in the tradeing post online in sth oz 1800

Thanks mate, but a 500 is way too much bike for me ;D "a man's got to know his limitations"
The bike I was looking at was a 125. There was one that went really cheap down in Tassie a couple of months back, but getting it to Brissie was abit of a hassle.
-
Back onto this old question again, can someone tell me where the engine numbers are stamped on a mid 80's KX ?
Cheers
-
Yep. My '84 500 has it on the right hand side, just below the barrel. Runs parallel to the bottom edge of the barrel.
-
thanks tony, unfortunately I think I've found yet another 85 model
-
If it's a 500 you're looking at, '84's are air cooled and '85's water cooled. That's easy, but I don't know much about the differences in 125's and 250's.
I'm sure someone out there does though. ;D
-
Thanks mate, from what I can tell there's bugger all difference between an 84 and 85 model 125. The model numbers are certainly different with either a C or D in the frame and engine number, but I don't think there was any major mechanical changes.

I googled photos of both 84 and 85 for a look.
84 had solid writing on the seat, 85 just had the outline.
I can see KIPS on the LHS of the barrel of the 85 but not the 84. Maybe 84 didn't have power valve???
-
Ah yes, finally we have a winner ;D,
Thanks for that mate, I'd been concentrating on mostly cosmetic differences. I don't think I was helped by the fact that when I was looking through sites like Bikepics, there's a couple of people there who think they have 84 models when they actually have 85's given that they have bikes with KIPS. But when I looked at all the pictures the vast majority don't have KIPS.
Thanks again, and unfortunately the bike I'm looking at is definately an 85. The search continues.
