I am looking for a WP, Ohlins or Fox shock to suit an '83 Honda CR480. I recently bought a WP shock from NZ, off an'82 CR480 and was told it would fit the '83 as well. But it is about 30mm too short ::). Unfortunately for me, I had the shock rebuilt by Rads and it probably now owes me more than I will ever get back for it :'(. I should have done some more research first :-[. I also have a WP shock to suit an '84 CR500, which needs a rebuild. I would consider a trade to get a good shock for my CR480, or would be happy to buy one outright if someone has one laying around.

Where would be the best place to look for a new one ? Ohlins USA ? What really makes me spew , is that a freshly serviced WP shock to suit an '83 CR480 came on US Ebay about a month after I bought the one from NZ, for $385 Buy it Now (which was less than what the NZ one cost me, before the rebuild ::) ).

I organised Derrick's Ohlins for him through Moose, can do the same for you Mark.
And yes '82, '83 & '84 CR shocks are all different...

85 and 86 are different as well by about 10mm. lots of changes from Honda in this era

82 's - 14.25
83's - 16
84's 16.88
85/86 around 17.75 but sometimes the 500 is shorter than the 250 etc.
also sometimes the WP'S and Ohlins are not stock length
I have a FOXSHOCK for 83 mod , needs full rebuild, cant remember if it was a twin clicker or not.

P.M sent . The other option I was thinking about , was to have the WP CR500 shock rebuilt with a spacer installed to bring it back to the length of the '83 shock . But the reservoir hose attaches to the shock body on the opposite side on the 500 and there may be other issues like getting the correct shock stroke and spring preload .

Thanks for the offer, John . I imagine that a new Ohlins shock will be at least up around the $1500 mark, so I will first check out what is around in the way of a secondhand one .
