Mark,
I'm sorry to hear that you're in for further treatment and apologise to you and your family for my poor attempt at humour on this thread earlier today.      Not appropriate under the circumstances.     Hope you're done with hospitals before too long.

Kidney stones are definitely not fun , Having had both heart attack and renal colic (Kidney stones being the cause of) I would choose the former of the two as being easily the lesser evil ,pain wise>:(
I am about Mark if you want to email me with a fix on one or two of the worlds problems. Cheers Tim754

Yes I can remember spewing out the window of the car while being driven at 140 kph to the nearest hospital in outback Queensland with these little blighters (stones) causing all sorts of dramas. Not nice.

Well folks, I'm still alive ;D. I got home today after a week of hell and I'm in pretty good spirits considering I'm wearing a catheter and piss bag as well as my right lower leg being in plaster.

Without going into a step by step run through the last week went kinda like this..........
I underwent ankle fusion surgery on January 19 at Concord Hospital. The 3 hour operation went down without problems and I'm delighted to say that the ankle is almost completely pain free after over a decade of chronic pain. To say that I'm stoked would be a gross understatement. While recuperating in Concord Hosp I noticed that I was having a little trouble pissing but it didn't bother me to any degree after the nurses and doctor explained that the urinary system often goes into 'shock' after major surgery involving large amounts of anesthetics. I was assured that it would be OK after a day or two.
I was released from Concord hospital on 21/1 and despite bumping into walls and furniture  walls in my wheelchair all was going well until around 10 PM that night when it became glaringly obvious that I couldn't pass any urine and the pain was building at an alarming rate. By midnight I was in the worst pain I'd ever experienced  so I called an ambo and was rushed to Mt Druitt Hospital where they hit me with 10mg of morphine and fitted a catheter. Within a couple of minutes I'd expended 2 litres of pink urine which brought an amazing relief. Nurses noted that there were two decent sized kidney stones in the urine/blood mix so it was assumed that the stones were the problem so they removed the catheter and I went home at 10am.

All seemed to be fine, I was pissing fairly normally and I enjoyed visits from friends and family. At 8pm I had a piss and passed yet another stone. I was pretty buggered by then so I hit the sack and slept soundly until midnight or so when awakened by a similar pain to the previous nights and an inability to piss told me that I's better get back to the hospital pronto. I once again called an ambo and was rushed to Mt Druitt Emergency where they immediately put another catheter on my willy and I quickly passed another 1.5 litres of bloody urine. At this stage an amazing young Hungarian doctor who looked like he should have replaced Sid in the Sex Pistols (spike hair,12 earings, nose lip and brow piercings and impressive tatoo collection) decided to check my prostate and put me through the MRI machine to check just what was going on. The results showed that my left ureter (the tube from the kidney to the bladder )was completely blocked by 10 stones, the biggest being 6mm :'(. The other side had six smaller stones but a trickle of piss was getting through.

My Hungarian punk doctor didn't muck about, he booked me an ambo straight to Westmead Hospital where, after two cancellations I went into surgery and was fitted with a temporary plastic stent, bypassing the blocked ureter. I was fitted with yet another, different type of catheter with a "fuel tap" on the end which will be in place for the next month until I go back in to have the plastic bypass stent removed. Two weeks after that I go back in again to have the remaining kidney stones lazered. There could be anything up to 30 or 40 stones in my kidneys so the plastic stent apparently gives them an easier route out. I just had a piss, which entails opening up my tap and pissing into a bowl and there were four little stones and a lot of sandy or muddy style stuff so something's happening :o.

All up I've had 9 days in hospital and a shitload of pain but it's been worth it. My ankle is now on the way to being fixed and best of all, we found a potentially serious problem that I wasn't previously aware of. I'd always thought my diminished piss power was down to my old fella prostate but it turns out my prostate's fine and it was something out of left field. As I said I've got two more operations coming up over the next month or so but it'll be well worth the inconvenience of having to wear a piss bag for a little while to get well again. This was one of the wake up calls I well needed.

Thanks to everyone who sent me PM's, emails and phonecalls....your concern has reminded me of just what good people frequent this sport. My mates have been amazing, taking care of business, transporting my mum, non driving girlfriend and others to the hospital to see me. I'm still not very well or too mobile but I can feel a steady improvement so I hope me, my crutches and trusty piss bag can get back into the shed in a week or so....there's a couple of bikes needing finishing touches for the upcoming Nats!

Bloody hell!! Talk about being put through the wringer. Glad that everything is back on an even keel and you now know what the hell has been going on in the waterworks department. Hope the rest of the surgery goes well and the ensuing recovery is fast and trouble free.

Just a sidebar on the kidney stone thingy; my Doctor gave me a list of foods that are know to contribute to kidney stones, which I duly perused and decided that I hardly ate any of the ones on the list. So I went back to the Doc and said how does one end up with 7.5 mm kidney stones without eating any of the "troublesome" foods. His answer; one word, DEHYDRATION. Apparently many aussie men run foul of this one. He also said beer doesn't help with rehydration contrary to popular belief.   ;D ;D

Isn’t that always the way, you go to fix some small problem with some old dunger and you end up having to fix all sorts of things.
Who would have thought that getting some suspension and frame work done would lead to needing a rod kit, did they check out the big end too while they were at it?
Hopefully the fuel pump and fuel lines are still working okay.

Don’t stop now either, keep going with the rebuild but make up your mind now about rebuilding as a racer or a garage queen.

I would suggest going for the basic racer as original parts would probably be hard to find as the original manufacturers aren’t making parts anymore.
You do have the option these days of many aftermarket parts from a variety of quality manufacturers, just don’t get too arty with weird cosmetics.
 :D ;D

Seriously though, glad to hear you’re on the mend.

Glad to here you've entered into the finish straight clear away, after a rough ride through the hazards!
Just a couple more rough bits to skim over. Take it easy for a while in the pits now for a complete recovery.

Hi Firko, it’s great to hear you are “OK”. Upside as Lozza expressed, you are able to smoke two pestilences with one shot, even if it is being painfully drawn out.
Chronic pain always sux, even worse when it taunts one with a loss of mobility.

Sid Vicious was your doctor?(are you sure? Come on, I wont tell anyone, what was it they really had you on  :) )

Hey Firko my life is great! It will never be perfect, but it really is great(touch wood). Hopefully now, fingers crossed yours will be too 8). Tread steady ::) and see ya on the starting line Firko.

All is on the improve ;D. My ankle fusion surgery has proved to be the best thing I could have done. No more pain and I'm now walking, albeit with the help of a stick. If it wasn't for my dicky knee I wouldn't need the stick at all. There have been a lot of setbacks that I won't go into right now but the last week or two have produced shitloads more mobility. If the ankle was the only problem I'm having to deal with I'd be well on the road to recovery.

Unfortunately the kidney problem I described back on page two of this thread hasn't improved all that much.
As I described, I've been fitted with plastic tubing stents to both of my ureters (the tubes running between the kidneys and the bladders) in the hope of clearing them of the kidney stone obstructions but they don't seem to have worked. The left kidney ureter is still totally blocked and the right one is 40% blocked. My kidneys are riddled with kidney stones and even though I'm going through the pain of passing stones 2-3 times daily they're not passing because of the blocked ureters. I'm awaiting the phone call to go back into hospital to have the stones lazered and to inspect the kidneys for further damage. The worst case scenario is that I may lose my left kidney but if all is OK the lazer treatments will obliterate the buggers to a small enough size to enable me to piss them out and the kidneys will start working again. According to the specialist, my left kidney's been out of action for a few years so whatever happens, I should feel a lot better.

One good result of my two months of recuperation is that I've knocked off 25kg :D. The downside is that I've lost a lot of strength from inactivity which I hope to eventually get back when I start physio and aqua therapy next Monday. I've had a therapy program especially written up for me by the sports physiologist wife of a mate and with her being a good friend, it'll be harder to cheat or chicken out, I'm really looking forward to it. I've also given my mountain bike a going over in preparation for my returning to the local cycle paths in a month or so, depending on surgery schedules.

Last week I slowly started back on my bikes...at first an hour here, an hour there up to the current 2-3 hours per day. I'm gradually getting the Cheney back together for the Nats and if the current progress continues I should have the Hindall RT2MX built and entered as well. One of the unfortunate aspects of being housebound is that I've had way too much computer access to eBay, Marks Swapmeet and vft.org which now sees me with all sorts of flashy gizmo's and trick bits for my bikes that I wouldn't have needed any other time  ::).

Thanks to everyone for your emails, phone calls, PM's forum enquiries and home visits. They helped me through the low periods more that you could ever imagine. The support from within the vintage movement has been truly amazing.
Thank you all very much.
