I reckon there's a great opportunity for someone to do a "Goof" replica. J

Good idea Jerry.
we wait to hear if Bear accepts the challenge.

Stop quoting yourself Hoony-its embarisment.... ;D
Yer come on Bear do it !!
-
A Moates replica would be more interesting, 500 engine in 250E frame yeah!!
-
Got me thinking of creating a top 10-15 list of iconic Aussie bikes amd then assigning them to people to get them replicated. KB has already done Trevors YZ. Agree with Johns Marty Moates build. Not hard to come up with a few others. Gary Floods MK7 250(with laid down shox) Stan S is doing the Gary O'Brien Montesa if he ever gets a chance. Over to you guys. Cheers Jerry

hmmmm. yes. correct a mondo
-
I used the ex Jimmy Ellis Championship winning YZ500L in riding schools I was running at Frankston trailbike park, it was a 490L with 500 stickers lol
-
No need to do a replica as the bike is still around.
-
In that case Bahnsy we need photo's so we can all enjoy it. J

You mean something like this bike

Shot at the same meeting late '83.
-
that's a great shot Tony, i assume its one of yours !
Moates was right forward on that grunty big bore and it was still driving up !
-
that's a great shot Tony, i assume its one of yours !
Yeah, shot with a Russian Zenit camera with the back duct taped up to stop the light getting in! :D
-
yeah - gives meaning to "body english"!!! Nice shot.
-
No need to do a replica as the bike is still around.
and its currently undergoing complete restoration but not by Bear.
-
Beautiful RM's,thanks for the pics, they are from the era im into,i was 12 years old in 83 and just dreaming about those bikes.
cheers Dale.

My RM500 takes off like the space shuttle, nothing wrong with the motor, suspension or chassis for that matter..... all round better open class bike than most.
-
Marc - what haven't you got I wouldn't like ;D I reckon that is an awesome looking bike.
-
Is that a "yamaha styl ???e" Boost bottle above the head on Goof's 500?
-

Gettinold ...I think you will find it is the rear shock resevoir.
-
Gettinold ...I think you will find it is the rear shock resevoir.
nah , its a White Power shock , the res is anodized red .Thats a boost bottle.
-
I'm pretty sure I remember it having a boost bottle.
Come to think of it, iit must be. Those 500's in the 80's really needed a bit if extra punch in the mid range............. ;D
-
I used the ex Jimmy Ellis Championship winning YZ500L in riding schools I was running at Frankston trailbike park, it was a 490L with 500 stickers lol
I have a couple of shots of that one from an echo valley race, might have been mountain man mx, don't think it was a Mr MX race. I will try and scan and post after the new year. It had a Tenere front disc fitted.
-
yeah it ran a boost bottle
i have one on mine as well ;)
-
Nice Pic, Goof's RM500 was certainly a trick looking bike.
Wandering if anyone knows what sidecovers he used back then? As the 500 alway's had oval covers, maybe PE175Z (82) were used?
After recently watching the 1983 MR. Motocross video, Goofs bike definately looked like he had a horsepower advantage over the rest at the last round in Broadford.
I heard a while back that this bike was bored, to well over 500cc ?
But I think it was Goof that was fast, and not the bike.
-
Marc - what haven't you got I wouldn't like
Pair of bloody teenagers to start with my friend. ;D
-
sorry Marc - have 4 ( :o) of my own!!!!!
-
There are Marty Moates replica bikes around for sure. I had an RM500 in a 250 frame for quite a while until selling it 18 months ago. Don't know its true origins. It was a pretty good bike, but I never rode a standard RM500 to compare. I hope the fellow who bought it has kept it running.
Cheers,
Jady
-
Regarding the above Marty Moates bike myself and the bikes original builder (and Marty's sponsor) Ron Whitemore intend to refit it with the running gear as Marty rode it. As he was a WP supported rider he ran their shock and pipe ( anyone got any leads on this stuff??) up front he ran works Showa forks fitted to a special WP made triple clamp. ( That has us scratching our heads). Once we have this stuff fitted and the appropriate 125 tank and false radiator shroud we will bring it out.
Any leads on any of this stuff will be most helpfull.

I was there that day at ACUSA park (watching) for the Aussie titles Goof when you did your knee.
that was one fast bike and beautifully built mate!
-
Goof! Would that be Trevor and Dragman standing in the background?
-
Here it is at Tivoli Mister Motocross earlier in the year...

And you didn't even come up and say g'day!!! :D
It really was 'Puncture Park' that day!
We did a day trip from Mt. Gambier. I wandered onto the infield and tried to look important so as not to get kicked out like some others............ it worked.......... ;D
-
Love those USD Simon forks!
-
And you didn't even come up and say g'day!!! :D
i waved to you multiple times but you pretended not to see me. ::) Bastard :D
-
Somewhere in my VHS video collection, I have the Channel 9 broadcast of that fateful day at Broadford when Goof's rocketship dethroned Gally. I really must try to drag that out and convert it to digital format. It's classic OZ Mr Motocross at it's best! ;D
-
I suggest you do it sooner than later Ajay!
When i converted some of my old VHS tapes to DVD (some dating back to 1984) about 8 years ago i was shocked that some of them suffered significant color bleeding, grainy and were badly deteriorated and only just watch able, i converted them anyway as something is better than nothing.
-
Really! OK, I'll have a look for it.... :o
-
Goof! Would that be Trevor and Dragman standing in the background?
Its Trevor & my Dad !
-

I dunno know Ray, this pic looks a bit suspect?
Its obvious the Girl was hired as a decoy, to keep eyes off that motor. ;)
(Seriously though Ray, would you be interested in building a replica of your winning RM?
It would be good to see you do a few parade laps here and there as well, as a spectator's point of view.) ;D
-
" SHIT " i certainly never had any one in my pit area that looked like that !!!! No wonder the Exhaust & muffler have have grown in size ......... ::)
-

Thats what caught my eye as well, GOOF.
I mean The Exhaust & Muffler. ;D
-
No wonder the Exhaust & muffler have have grown in size .........
Hahaha :D
Thats one advantage of todays motocross compared to the old days I guess - seems to be more women involved in the sport.
Although, I havent been to a late mx event for a while. :-\

Do tell! Is that his old bike??
-
Do tell! Is that his old bike??
Yes about three years in the making, from around the globe and across Australia.
The story on the holey head was for Steven and I to track it down in the far south in Albany WA, on a gokart.Detective work eventually found it in Victoria.
Plenty of hunters and collectors will share the rest of the restoration journey for sure. 8)
What a cracker 50th gift. :P
-
Great story. Are there any good pics of the completed bike?
-
i think we should leave it to Rosco to fill the gaps in.
-
:)Thats fanbloodytastic ;) 8)
-
Bing privy to the work Rosco did on this bike along with D project and a host of others ,it's just awesome to see this piece of Australian Motocross history back in the hands of Goof.
Well done to everyone involved.
-
Fantastic Build guys, it is indeed an Iconic Aussie MX race bike.
would love to hear the story of the build if bear or others can fill us in. how much of it is original, where did you find the missing bits etc.
Goof must be rapt, what a great bunch of mates to do this for him
-
Not big fan of newer bikes but feck that gives you a woody. Well done

Here's some of the before photos and the transformation from when I bought it to how it's ended up 8)
As you can see from this pic the bike is fitted with a PE400 motor.
Arno Franz who had owned the bike had done quite a few mods to fit it up.
Also seems he was a Carlton supporter ;D
(http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae230/dprojectalbum/DSCN0456_zps60943b62.jpg) (http://s974.photobucket.com/user/dprojectalbum/media/DSCN0456_zps60943b62.jpg.html)(http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae230/dprojectalbum/DSCN0724_zpsc24bd843.jpg) (http://s974.photobucket.com/user/dprojectalbum/media/DSCN0724_zpsc24bd843.jpg.html)
-
Here are some of the Mods and drilled parts that were left on the bike.
Many of the drilled bolts and washers which he used to mount the motor, seat, muffler etc were all missing and had to be replicated.
As you can see he spent a lot of time trying to get the weight off the bike.

-
How much weight do you think you could reduce by all that drilling?????
-
Until you showed us those mods it just looked like any old thrashed RM. I believe the original motor was somewhere else and Rosco and the boys tracked it down?
I've seen the pics of the build... Incredible amount of effort went into recreating Goofs 83 race bike as it was. Awesome job!
-
How much weight do you think you could reduce by all that drilling?????
Fork all but looks trick paul 8) someone liked drilling holes , I don't mind a bit off drilling from time to time ;)
-
Goof really went to town on the old girl,it must have been light!
-
Thank god Arno had kept some of the other parts like the front fender and muffler.
Thanks to forum member Suzuki 59 Craig Taylor I was able to come up with the side covers and rear fender.
After missing on the correct colour fork/brake protectors in Germany.
I ended up finding the front fork/brake protectors in the UK but in red ::)
All the plastics were then replicated from the samples so they were all the same colour.
All the stickers had to be reproduced, some from ones I had collected over the years.
All the TFR and chase the Fox had to be scanned out of old mags then re sized to match what was on the bike.

I'm just planning on laying off the meat pies :) (only planning!!!!)

The Twin Air airbox was also missing.
By co incidence I had bought one of Rosco which Andy Caldecott had used on one of his bikes back in the day!
Rear shock was also gone, ended up getting the correct one on ebay in holland which needed a total rebuild.
New seals, hose, powder coat the spring etc. Learn't a little bit along the way about the history and model changes from year to year.

Motor which was from a low hour bike,I had picked up off a guy on Marks swap meet in the US who was kind enough to crate it up and post it off.
The usual strip down,re build and repaint.
Same with the frame.
Rims were sent off to be polished and then anodised the correct colour.
Re spoked with NOS Suzuki spokes.
Goof had a couple of other mods.
The swing arm had an extender made up to increase the wheel base, had to cut up a swingarm to make that one up >:(
Also YZ boost bottle had to be adapted to suit.
Also the struts, brake stay, chain guide, brake levers perches and rear brake arm all anodised black.
Then the fun bit,assembly :D

I know that after Goof raced the bike in 83' young Vic A Grader Steven Breese rode the bike for Flood in early 84' as i once took him and "RM Suzilla" home from somewhere (buggered if i can remember where we were). so who had the bike after it left floods hands and when Arno got it (what year Arno?) and what happened to the engine?
-
Luckly Arno had also kept the Beets/TMV muffler which didn't need much.
WP pipe, something that I thought we would never find and probably the rarest part on the bike. Was donated by goof fan and Viper rider Mick Sharp.
Gaz Hacking spent ages on that one also Goofs tank and airbox to get them to where they are today

Heh Jase thank god you can work out how to post photos , something's I'm a complete Dumb Shit or get lazy and say to hard for another Day. To all of you you will be reading and seeing plenty of a Young Lions TFR Yellow Fire Breather . My negotiating and handshake deal with Jase made this whole project be able to go ahead with like minded Goof Fans like Jase. There is so many sub stories which will come out over time. But remember this web Site is Built on a Passion and we had plenty for our Bro the Youngest Ever Winner of the Greatest MX series that we will ever experience MR MOTOCROSS thanks to Vince Tesoriero . Roll on Mar 8/2014 Mr Motocross Legends & Stars Charity Dinner where the Big Girl will be front and centre on Display . Stay Safe Rosco.
-
After searching long and hard for the motor Rosco and Les Barfoot finally tracked down the cylinder and head.
The head was on the RM that Lackey used at CD? These were re coed by Rosco and Steve Fox and kindly Donated by Rhian Glover.
With out the photos taken at Broadford by RM/Goof fan 30 years ago there was no way that I could have replicated the finer details you see.
A few weeks before his birthday a group of his mates including MX legend Mark Hill came around and we all helped re assemble it.
So you can see like any resto it is/was never going to be easy.
But as you can see it was all worth it.
So a big thanks to Gaz,Rosco, les,Mick Sharp Michael,Rhian,Robby and everyone who put in so much time and effort to get the project finished.
Hope you get a chance to check it out sometime 8)

Yeah,I had to brush up on that one Rosco. If you check the '' tips for using the forum'' its up there. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it ;)
-
How much weight do you think you could reduce by all that drilling?????
Yeah, would love to know that one.
I've got a standard 500 we could check it against.
My brother made all the missing drilled bolts said '' if he took a crap before the race,he would have been lighter" ;D
-
You did a good job getting all the goodies Jason, hey how hard would it be to get some copies of the stickers mate ?
Anything for you mate ;)
-
Well done guy's, I have a special bike to do as well for Rosco's big bash....it's a lot easier job than you guy's had. It's awesome when things like this happen. Makes you wonder where all the top guy's bikes went because most of them had trick factory parts on them even if they weren't full factory bikes. We are in need of a Dunlop K139 if any one has one. 8). See you all at the big bash. I hope Holeshot buddy behaved himself at Goof's!!!!! ;D. You blokes need to bring that little jigger up to the Conondale Classic next year.....and some fast Vico riders if you have any ;D.
-
We are in need of a Dunlop K139 if any one has one.
Have a brand new 21" front in the shed that I bought for Finke in 2000 and never used it.

PM sent BAHNZY, cheers.

The bike looks amazing. 8)
I cant believe the effort that has gone into getting it back to its original state. Beautiful job.
Must have been a great moment presenting it to Ray.
wow its like 1983 again. :)

Great job Jason and all others involved.
Yes I was the one that initially destroyed it ,and have often been reminded of it, but I'm not sorry as I had great fun & good results racing it as a buggy ...I brought the bike around 1988 for $1000 from a 16 year old kid from Bayswater Ii brought the bike to put the motor in a buggy (pics attached) for racing against modified odysseys....I did ride the bike in a few paddocks before dismantling it...the bike flew...I remember roll starting it as kick starter was pretty ordinary, & as soon as it fired up it was straight on the back wheel, it was like having a switch instead of a throttle..it was just GO....after I finished buggy racing (about 20 odd years ago) I sold the motor to a guy for sprint car racing.
I had the frame sitting there for ages & planned getting a 4 stroke motor for it & a mate was selling a PE400 which I bought & put that motor into it..It was registered & I used it for trail riding...About 5 or 6 years ago I joined VCM & VIPER & used the frame with the PE motor to race and this is how Gary & Jason found the bike...unfortunately these are the only photos I have of the buggy & all you can see is the muffler...I have no pictures of the bike
Cheers,
Arno

Don't know why you didn't just put the 500 motor back in the frame instead of selling it and stuffing around fitting something else?

Arno was the Buggy Pics taken at Granite park Seymour ?

The RM motor was still in the buggy when I did the PE400 mod. Not being into motocross until I joined the vintage scene you have to realise that this was a out of date 500 motocross bike ,it was worth more as a registered trail bike and it made a great trail bike.
When I was racing the buggy with T.O.R.C (Trike and odyssey racing club) the maximum size was 500cc, CR 480s were a popular motor to use , I was offered whole Rm500s for $500 then .
Yes Hoony that was Seymour.
Cheers Arno

I cant believe the effort that has gone into getting it back to its original state. Beautiful job.
