As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high
gear to provide Australians with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods
--merchandise that has been produced at the expense of Australian labor.
This year will be different. This year Australians will give the gift of
genuine concern for other Australians. There is no longer an excuse that, at
gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by Australian hands.
Yes there is!
It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in
a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates
from your local hair salon or barber?
Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some
health improvement.
Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small owned detail shops
& car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift
certificates. For the Gardeners on your list - how about some lovely healthy
pot plants or plants for the garden or even a gift certificate from the
local lawnmowing man.
Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down
the Panasonic of a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift
receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or
games at the local golf course.
There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift
certificates. If your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a
half dozen breakfasts at the local cafe. Remember, folks this isn't about
big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town with their
financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.
How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or
motorcycle, done at a shop run by the Australian working guy?
What about a gift certificate from a local home handyman for some chores to
be done around the home?
Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mum? Mum would LOVE the services of a
local cleaning lady for a day.
Someone's computer could use a tune-up,& I KNOW I can find some young guy
who is struggling to get his repair business up& running.
OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin
their own wool& knit them into scarves. They make jewelry,& pottery&
beautiful wooden boxes.
Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave
your server a nice tip. How about going out to see a play or ballet at your
hometown theatre.
Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.
Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another 10,000 Chinese lights
for the house? When you buy a $5.00 string of light, about 50 cents stays in
the community. If you have those kinds of to bucks burn, leave the postman,
garbo or babysitter a nice BIG tip.
You see, Christmas is no longer about draining Australian pockets so that
China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about
Australia, encouraging our small businesses to keep plugging away to follow
their dreams. When we care about other Australians, we care about our
communities,& the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.
THIS is the new Australian Christmas tradition.

Well said Freaky! Got me thinking for sure. Merry Xmas Jerry
-
Well put Freaky, buy yourself a 6 pack for putting that up

Hear Hear Freaky, and here I was thinking you might have bumped your head at the Speedway. Well said mate!!
I was thinking along the same lines when I read about one of our buddies from NZ had contracted a crook wicket and was checking his bucket list-why don't we help each other more. We might not be able to pay cash towards something so why not value add in other ways. Help each other get bikes ready for race days or transport a mates bike up to a meeting if he can't get there. I reckon with the network set up on here we could get a guy like that from the airport, to the race track and onto a borrowed bike in no time at all.
That's what this forum is/could be very good at.
-
What a great idea. Keeps the taxes in the country too.
-
Totally agree Freaky, buy youself a carton I reckon.
Make sure it's aussie beer and not one of those poofters drinks like Corona.
-
ahh well,It will be the same christmas tree for us again this year-re-useable 8)

things into perspective.
I have just cut & pasted what you have just written & going to send to everyone on my
email list, well put mate, congratulated !!!

You just keep coming up with surprises Freaky, I think you should get an OBE or something for your work this year.....maybe you should run for parliment....good on ya Bro.....keep up the good work. :)
-
:'( Now you have made me feel guilty freaky , But a bloody great idea . This should be sent to all the pollies and see how many of them would think of this sort of Economic Stimulation . The more I think about this , Im going to do it .
-
I've never known anyone who actually liked Fosters, apart from Bazza Mackenzie & John Elliott.
Toohey's is still Aussie, at least I think so, I'm not really a beer drinker.
-
Gentleman gentleman you all give me too much credit.
Freaky is just the messenger, these clever words have been picked up on my travels, but as it takes a resounding note in my mind i though its message should be spread as far and as wide as it can be.
I also posted it on FB and a few other sites so lets hope we can get it viral. With a bit of luck it will be forwarded back and forth and you might get it 5 times in your inbox, but that means the message is getting out there !!!!
maybe then we dont need to worry what the Polites are up too and hey who doesnt want to give a gift voucher from Doc you mow some lawns ;)
-
I was being polite and not mentioning the plaigerism, still a great idea though.
-
you guys would be supprised to what beers tooheys brew.we make all the cartons that you rip open to get at your beer
cheers
jim

You never miss an oportunity do you Wasp?
-

Sorry Steve, Toohey's hasn't been Australian owned in years. It's owned by Lion Nathan (NZ) which is a subsidiary of Kirin (Japan) which is owned by the Mitsubishi Group (Japan). Before that takeover I think it was owned by Seagrams (Canada).
A couple of years ago I decided to give the foreign breweries as big a miss as I could and now drink Australian owned boutique beers. Take the time to study the Aussie boutique brewery market and you'll find that the little Aussie owned beers are in most cases head and shoulders better than the multi national owned brews in taste and quality yet don't cost all that much more. It's another example of to what Freaky's post preaches...... When you're buying your Christmas wine and beer this year, support the independent Aussie breweries and wineries and you're supporting Australian business and jobs.
It's only a little thing in the whole scheme of things but its a start. ;)

Cascade?
Tassie's still part of OZ isn't it, the Dane's haven't taken it over yet.
-
Good one Freaky.....you spread your xmas cheer and the aussie dollar takes a dive....we'll call you Paul Keating.
We'll see if the local prices go up in time for xmas shopping. ;D

Err..no. Cascade's owned by Fosters which is Saffie owned. Tassie's other brewer, Boags is owned by Lion Nathan (NZ/Japan).
Take a journey down the beer isle at Dan Murphy's and you'll see a shitload of small Aussie owned brewers, including Coopers. Buy from them.
-
Good on ya,freaky;I'm to moved to write.p
-
White Rabbit is brewed in Healesville Victoria, and new brewery starting up in Geelong next year. Great Beer

Well it is obvious what Firkos "Special Subject" is - strangely I thought it was Vintage Motocross from the 60's and 70's - how wrong can you be. :(
But I do love the image of FIRKO and BOUTIQUE being used in the same sentence. ;D
-
What a good idea , people will now rush to buy local GMC
Yep and it should be ready by next Xmas ;D ;D ;D
-
Quality takes time maRc.....Picaso didnt paint the sealing in a month.

Im not sure Picaso would be the one he had in mind.... wasnt he the painter that created deformed abstract images - although some of them pipes i seen form geoff... maybe you are onto somthing.
-
Picaso painting the ceiling??? I gotta see that one!!! :D :D :D. He was a roof painter Boofhead-not ceilings.
And he painted vagis' and stuff.

I was only thinking again this morning how cool local vouchers could be. How many of us rush around and pick the first piece of shit off the shelf cause it fits in a price and hope the reciever can use it ( or is it just me) its usually some kind of electrical good - be it kitchen, household or tool.
Half the time its not well ( how you say)..... the best quality or its too hard to use on a daily basis and gets parked in a cupboard somewhere only to see the light of day infrequently, becoming that odd reminder to both parties every time it comes out..... you know the awkward feeling.
Any how, i just love the idea of being able to have somethig done thats labouor intensive. Every one is so time poor these days we just never get around to it, every one has that 'thing' they never get around too. So this xmas fuc it why not just pay someone to do it and youll never look back !.
If you have been a good boy or girl this xmas - What about getting your misses to get you a voucher from a bike store to rebuild that motor you are 'gunna' get around to, even if you supply the parts, its the labout that you never get too.....
Car wash's... how many local kids could we find to do a monthly car wash for $5-10 a throw ? even if its just for 6 months. Even get the kid to make up his own little voucher book thingy. Mick you can get one for your misses for 20 bales of hay ? sure she would use them sometime.
Just tell them why your going down that path and not perfume.
I just can think of so many cool ideas that are labour intensive or have taken labour to make and every one wins, unfortunalty i sit on my fat arse and sell jap stuff so it wont help me. But maybe it will just save some of those local guys who stock that obscure bloody thing your always looking for and need to buy once every 2 years. I really really hate going to them guys and finding there no longer there - do you realise how hard it is to find that 'whatsee dooflicky' when you cant get it from where its always been ?
Spread the work kids ViVA the revolution
-
Joan that would be Michael Angello and ceiling :-*
Ha, that’ll teach you for trying to be a smart arse Joany boy.
Err. 2013 gift certificates now available.
And good incentive Freaky, it’s the people that can make a difference, not the pollies.
-
I see what Tatey was onto - painting sealings. There is a guy that comes around after the tiler has been. This guys does the GAP sealing. he rides around on his motorbike with a couple of cartridges of sealer and a spray pistol in his backpack and finishes off the job. He could get a gong as the cook is always asking when I will re-seal the laundry-thanks Joan, I'll see if he has a voucher.
-
I didnt know all you homo's where into those painter fellas.....looks like we have a bunch of people on here with too much time on their hands (painting)....no wonder their bikes dont go...I guess you'll all be going to the opera for Xmas. ;D.......downright disgrace....and you call yourselves VMXers.

Funny, I thought it was about some bloke's birthday. Can't think of his name right now... You know, that foreign chap who did those things... ::)
Totally agree with the buying Australian sentiment. Not always easy, especially for those like me who leave gift buying until the night before!

that'll make it even easier-let's see Bundy Rum. Coopers Dark Ale. A lovely Barossa Red or 2 followed by a Stanthorpe Muscat-all Ozzy made.

Not the way i hear it. This is a revolution of caring about each other & isn't that what Christmas is about ?

Aussie made? maybe. Aussie owned? Well as far as Aussie rum is concerned, Bundy is owned by the British company Diageo. Inner Circle is owned by Lion Nathan (NZ/Japan) and worst of all...is now made in Fiji. For many years Inner Circle stood above just about every rum in the world in the dry rum class but Lion Nathan bought the company from CSR, stripped and sold off the assets and used the name on an inferior (read:cheap) Fijian product. Thankfully Beenleigh and Frigate are both owned by VOK which is Aussie owned so if Aussie style dry rum is your thing....give Bundy the flick and buy Frigate or Beenleigh, trust me, you won't know the difference mixed with Coca-Cola (USA).
-
the old beenleigh rum distillery and the beenleigh tavern only 2 mins from my house ;D
-
Is it still open Oldskool?
-
nah not open anymore :'(.was when i first moved up here about 5 years ago the big red building is still there, theres a big dfo factory outlet centre thing that never took off there on part of the site its been there for about 2-3 years still empty and the beenleigh tavern is still there.cheers
