Title: husky fork seal problems
Post by: Kane Mcguire on November 12, 2011, 04:17:25 pm
i have always had to run 2 fork seals in all my huskys to stop leaking. i also always cut 10mm out of one of the seal springs. what is the history of this common problem and is there a solution?. the seal stiction is so heavy with 2 seals and also as compared to a modern fork.

The  husky factory mechanics/riders of yesteryear liked having weeping seals -less stiction , just gotta keep the oil up to em :D

i was talking to a husky expert who when he was riding enduros in europe , he worked in the factory in sweden and he said to use 30 grade straight mineral oil in gearbox and forks , the same oil as in the briggs and stratton 4t mower engines , might work a treat , you can buy it from bunnings its now marketed by penrite

If your fork bush's in the leg are worn it oval shape the seal and they leak.

Found an interesting bit of info on another forum.
Apparently Kawasaki KZ1000 fork seals will fit.
One per leg.
Have bought a set to try but they are not here yet.
Will post my thoughts on them later.

Ps . I bought a set of seals off Ebay and they leaked before I even got the bike off the stand. :o
When I had a close look they didn't have that lip on the outside to seal against the fork slider.

The real problem is that HVA forks aren't 35mm..they are 34.7mm......so get a "green" seal from a Moto Guzzi transmission shaft seal which is 34.7mm and hey presto...no more probs.... No matter what oil you run....:)

I had leaky fork seals when I bought my 390 about 9 years ago. Replaced them with std off the shelf items from my local bike shop. Two per side. I use an old seal with the spring and lip removed in the bottom of each leg as a spacer. Probably no need, but I do it anyway. It took a few hours of riding to get rid of the stiction. I rebuilt the forks a few months ago, and again had to ride it for a few hours. Never had any leaking problems. I use 15cwt oil and always replace the fork wipers when doing the seals.
There is a Honda seal that fits and was the hot tip back in the late 70's. Maybe someone on here knows which one.

40 mm seals with the same part number as the husky ones.

I have a handwritten note that the Honda part # is  91255-273-000 (or 010),
seal size 35x45x7, fits up to MJ06023 but I've never bought a set to see if its correct.

(After MJ06023 seal size is apparently 35x47)

Just measured my old leg (grey slider) & its 34.9mm

KZ1000 fork seals are listed as 36x48 on my Competiton Developments l
"Leakproof" forkseals application list

Funny , the seals I got as KZ1000 measure 39/52/10.

For my 1983 WR240 - Alan Mallam from Track and Trail in Belmont Newcastle sold me a set of red coloured Marzzochi fork seals about 20 years ago - he promised they would work and they did. Never a problem since that date. Problem now is getting them again.
