As anyone who's been on OzVMX for a while would know, back in the day my main riding was trail/playriding. I was never a racer, but I loved just getting out in the bush on a lazy Saturday arvo with a few mates. We rode old boat anchor traillies like XL and XT500s, DT400s and the like. But we had a ball, usually finished up by a few drag races or a wheelie comp on the way home to be followed by a burger at the snack bar... Those were the days. Living where I did, surreounded by forestry, we had a zillion acres of God's best riding country. OK, it wasn't that good, but it was pretty damned fine.
Anyways, here's a few pics from one of my favourite places deep in the forestry plantation. Geez I miss that sort of riding...

Gee Graeme, you must have been a wealthy buggar......boots, riding jersey, gloves, full face helmet aannnddd googles.....phew, I could only dream of being a factory racer like that.....I know what you mean though, I use to do the same, some Saturday arvos we'ed do the spur of the moment thing and go camping/riding up the Mungatookutooku Valley, sleeping bag, carton of beer (for some reason you didnt need water back then, beer always surficed), some bangers and beans, one of those puddings in a can with the sauce that dribbled out...mmmmm bacon and eggs for breaky........heaven.....argh for the simple times.....no kids/morgage,credit card/s (everyone always paid cash back then) and all the other shit. :)

You can see I was serious - I took the mirrors off...

Good photos Graeme, you look like an ADB testrider,aaahhhh... that would be the life!
cheers Dale.

I brought a XL 500 new myself , but put 250 side covers on ;D great fun bike for doing mono's and just getting out on the trails with mate's, we also owned DT 400's, XL 250-500's, XT 250-500's and would ride the bike's to work through the week and then out on the trails on the weekend's, but I never had all the gear, it was dessert boots, jeans and flano shirt for me :)
Good shots Graeme, I love looking at old photo's.
Cheers Mick.

There's still a few places like that we get to ride in SE Qld and northern NSW. Makes a nice change from MX tracks.
-
Yep, good days. We still do it sometmes at The tinderies, Brown Mountain and 6ft track/jenolan. I'm certainly not so handy to be able to mono along the river like the picture.

Next time you're over John(Johnnie Old?) let me know & I'll see whether a trials bike can be arranged for you to come on 1 of our days riding up there. You'll end up in places you never knew existed ;)

Mungatooks, Foxton beach, Now I'm starting to feel homesick ::)
Go on, throw in the Akatarawas for good measure
-
Some cool river crossings there.....and hillclimbs!! ;D
-
One of the few things I miss about NZ was the riding.
How about the Devils staircase in the Akatarawas? :o easy on my TL250
-
Remember that one in the rain.....not too fondly. ;D
-
Mind you the rain made us good mud riders, if you didn't ride in the rain you didn't get to ride at all
Where abouts did you like Davey?

Even easier on a modern trials bike, I can remember when Adrian Harry was over here learning how to ride less than grippy stuff going riding with about 20 others & coming across 3 enduro bikes there, 1 parked at the bottom, 1 at the top & 3 riders dragging the third 1 about 1/2 way up, most of us made it easily & then 1 of the guys rode back down on the front wheel before wheelstanding the whole length of the rockface. We probably spent 1/2 hour there trying it out in different gears
Did you ever ride the rollercoaster etc Brent?
-
Tony I only ever went to the "Akas" a few times on a bike and a few times later with the 4WD club. The other Brent up here "Muz" spent a lot of time up that way in the late 70's early 80's. I don't know the roller coaster but he remembers it.
I rode mostly around Wgton, Moa point, Wrights hill, the steps to Massey memorial!, the south coast (my cousin had a batch at Karori stream mouth). We even had our own personal track on the hills above Houghton and Princess bays.
When I had my TL250 the entire coast of Wgton was a trials section, I would ride for a full day trying to get right around the coast without riding on the road or footpath, some of it got a bit hairy and once ended in a swim ::)
